Worst UK rail crash in 15 years. Driver has been arrested so whether he failed his D & A test after the incident who knows.

Edit : 7 now dead, tram driver was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

Derailed going over points so likely speed was a factor. Very tragic. Didn't even realise they had trams in London.

I thought the same.

Croydon tram link has been around about 15 years I think, a lot of it uses ex-national rail lines like where it derailed today, as well as running through Croydon town centre. Doesn't go anywhere near central London.

Croydon. Not quite London.

Tram seems to have derailed going at excessive speed over points on entry to a station. Deliberate act by the driver or a mistake or DUI?

Passengers report the train sped up and the driver looked asleep

Either the end of a night shift or the day after the night before?

A friend of mine who use the tram regularly said tram drivers always drive fast up to the exact bend where the tram toppled over but they usually brake before going around the bend.  It could explains why the driver has a slow reaction to braking before the bend if he was indeed drunk.

the driver may have fell asleep at the wheel, was certainly going too fast around a corner. terrible tragedy that could and should have been avoided and certainly human error.

It does seem that way. Excessive speed appears to be the main factor but we should reserve judgment until the investigations are complete.

Could be anything yet - could have had a ministroke or epileptic fit or passed out for some medical reason......

I appreciate he might have been drunk / tired too which is perhaps the more likely but lets not be the jury yet.

If it's a medical reason then I hope it was fully declared and is not a repeat of the Glasgow bin lorry crash
