SPF07 Posted 12 January 2017 Posted 12 January 2017 The sale of Schlupp seems imminent but what I don't understand is our lack of ambition at times. Our achievements last year put us in a position of strength with relation to potential signings and setting us Up for at least the foreseeable future to have a higher level of player. without doubt we've changed our tact and upped game in the sense of increased value. However, at no stage have we tried to test our direct competitors resolve in the same way other clubs do. We have the likes of Bournemouth looking at Terry, Wiltshire etc. They may not be the answer but shows potential. if Jeff has no part to play in the future, why not use him as bait in a swap deal for someone like zaha? Who would undoubtedly be an improvement to our squad. Yes palace probably don't want to sell, but stick Jeff and £15m - £20m under their noes and it at least gives them a decision to make, not to mention unsettling the player. Also, like it or not they're in a relegation battle so probably can't afford to lose him to AFCON and have no replacement. likewise, in the summer when we sold Kante - was the consideration ever present to take the likes of fabregas as part of the deal? Or when arsenal were after Vardy, and Giroud was clearly out of favour? We're unlikely to attract these types of players normally, but when you have sought after players as we do, then it changes what clubs are prepared to offer in exchange. Not to mention we are champions! I accept that that only lasts so long but the point is that it concerns me that we didn't even consider.
WigstonWanderer Posted 12 January 2017 Posted 12 January 2017 I think we have to accept that the likes of Giroud and Fabregas would never sign fo us, not to mention the outrageous wages we'd need to pay.
BenTheFox Posted 12 January 2017 Posted 12 January 2017 We spent £70 million in the summer. Granted, we could have spent it more wisely but I don't question the club's ambition. Decision making maybe, but not the ambition.

Monsell1976 Posted 12 January 2017 Posted 12 January 2017 Bournemouth are seen as a risk free loan option, as they aren't expected to compete with the top teams, and cannot play against their parent club and could affect teams at the top. Where Jeff is concerned, he wants to play every week, he's not proved he warrants a place over the other two left backs, and he has had chances, over the past couple of seasons. Its not as easy as saying use him as a swap, the club would want to trade, and both players would want to swap clubs, no easy feat. So I think 12 mill for a player who hadn't reached the levels required at 24, and is so inconsistent in his end product, is a great deal for the club, and is 12 mill towards who we want.
Babylon Posted 12 January 2017 Posted 12 January 2017 None of those players are likely to ever want to come here and we'd never afford their wages. And Zaha has been garbage for years, yes he's having a purple patch. But one assist and two goals last season doesn't scream £30m player.

He is pish. Swapping in Zaha defeats the point of binning Schlupp altogether. At least with Schlupp you get a utility player and great comedic timing.
Guest CityFan 06 Posted 12 January 2017 Posted 12 January 2017 I get the jist of what you are trying to get across. One of the key things I really hope & stress we don't do both this season and in future campaigns, is settle for relegation battles. We are capable of much more and I don't want every season to become trying to stay up. I'm hoping the club's ambition is progressive development, which I would call as - top ten finishes, expanded stadium, continually attracting high calibre players, competing in Europe, succeeding in cups. Being a bigger club overall.
The whole world smiles Posted 12 January 2017 Posted 12 January 2017 We ended up winning the title after years of approaching player recruitment a certain way can understand why we stuck with it. That being said Think we were quite close with the sporting captain Silva that would have been extremely ambitious.
SPF07 Posted 12 January 2017 Author Posted 12 January 2017 No one questioned the money, it was the targets that were questioned. It is not by coincidence the two Manchester clubs have identified the two Tottenham full backs as January targets. it improves their own teams, it disrupts the mindset of players and reduces impact of rivals. giroud and fabregas are no more money than we are paying Vardy! Nor are they messi or Ronald's, both of which have spent the majority of the season on the bench. and as was suggested, if clubs are prepared to use them in a bid to sign sought after players then they have to accept it to a certain degree. They may not accept it but you never know without trying

katieakita Posted 12 January 2017 Posted 12 January 2017 We are selling a guy nowhere near our first team squad for £12 million ish, our 2nd highest ever transfer out to another premiership side and not a top premier 6 challenger at that so sorry we can agree to disagree, struggling to remember when other premiership teams were fighting over a player who is surplus to our requirements. We have moved on from when Jeff burst onto the scene and time for him to move on as well.

davieG Posted 12 January 2017 Posted 12 January 2017 How do you know what we have or haven't tried? Based on the fees we've paid so far the only thing winning the league has done is push up the asking price even for players with just potential. Kante leaving for "Chelsea tells you we're not a top level attractive club.
foxfanazer Posted 12 January 2017 Posted 12 January 2017 Wilshere!!!!! Why do so many people call him Wiltshire?

We don't know and yes it is just assumption based but given how public both were and how close the media were to it, I think it's unlikely. i didn't say we were a top level club or that it would have come off, but neither are these top top top level players anymore, they've sat on the bench almost all season. everyton have just signed a player in a very similar position, last year was a £24m player, this year doesn't get a look in and has moved on.
