What has happened to the English game?

How have we let money ruin the game for English players?

It's been like a seesaw, as the League has grown the prospects of the England national team have gone the other way, Imagine all the players in the Lower league, or in the youth ranks at clubs up and down the country that will never get a chance?

One thing that's always been in the blood of the English game is grit, determination and pride, Vardy last season was a breath of fresh air! he gets a new contract worth much more than anyone should ever realistically earn for kicking a football and all of a sudden he can't even be bothered to track down.

Do we need a complete German style reset?

Should the rules be changed even further to make sure teams accommodate English players and give them a real chance?? It feels like players don't play for the love of the game anymore, they play for the money only, and go wherever the money is.

Maybe we need to step back and look at it on a national and domestic level before it's too late and costs us another few decades of disappointment.

So many questions Lee, it's difficult to know where to start really..

I'm a bit old skool so view the old days through rose tinted specs a bit, but the money nowadays beggars belief really. Hearing about teenagers with agents earning £20k a week before they've even played first team football doesn't sit right with me. And stories of players spending £50k on diamond encrusted gear sticks for their Lamborghini's makes me want to puke. But that's the world we live in now whether I like it or not.

I think the class of '92 was probably the last example of home grown talent being truly nurtured to become top players and since the birth of the PL and foreign imports it's a different game now. The national team decline is a whole other debate, but I don't think I'll ever see an England side compete for major honors in my lifetime.

I saw a stat that said wholw of La Liga combined have spent  $25m in the January window. Yet they have more Spanish players and the out perform England in European competitions.

Give it 10/20 years and the premier league will be a closed affair.

Money has ruined the working class mans game.

We all thought we would never see Leicester win the league, footballs a funny old game and I think there is still a few surprises to be had.

Tbf the way the telly deal is structured there most of the teams in that league don't have that much money. Real Madrid and Barcelona spend big at times.

There's nothing I'd love more than to sit down with my young lad and watch England win the World Cup.

I just think there's too much pressure on the team to perform, and I sense they play with a real fear of failure. After what the press did to Graham Taylor, Hoddle, Beckham and others, I get the impression that representing your country these days is seen as a distraction from the PL more than anything else. I'd love to be proved wrong but I just can't see us competing while the PL and FA are set up as they are.

I don't like how much footballers get paid any more than the next person but I get a bit sick of people bitching and moaning about it like it's the players fault.

Drinky is 6 months or so older than me. When I was kicking a ball around at the park or in the back garden when I was 6 the thought of wages and a career never entered my mind, I was playing the game I loved. What's more likely - Drinky was somehow different and was grinning to his 6 year old self about how rich he would be... OR, Drinky was better/worked harder and grew up in a system that has rewarded him beyond his wildest dreams (and where ridiculous money has become the norm) and I was just shit/didn't work hard enough? Hmm I wonder.

I mean just think about how much our wage bill will have gone up in the last decade. I bet between Drinky, Vardy and Kasper now, our wages would be close to (if not in excess of) the whole squad's wages from the league 1 season. I didn't see many people complaining about that until our recent slump in form. People now are still suggesting we should've thrown money at this window to sort the team out.

There are a number of contributing factors as to why they get paid so much (foreign owners and the now truly global audience are two big factors) but one of the other things that often gets bypassed is the fans part in funding. We pay to watch the games, we buy extortionately expensively food and drink while we're there, we spend money on merchandise, we pay for sky or BT, we go to the pub to watch it in droves etc etc the list goes on.

I haven't really addressed how we solve this I know but my main point is that if the money really bothers you that much then stop funding it. Without fans the club is nothing and has nothing. It's a bit silly moaning about the club paying the players so much whilst wearing a £50 quid shirt that cost fvck all to make, scoffing down a £4 pie full of gravy, drinking a pint that cost £5 but is watered down piss and paying £500 a year for your seat whilst you've also got a sky sports subscription at home. I know that for the money we pay to go to games you expect your players to give their all and that this season that doesn't seem apparent, but for us at least this season's lack of effort is a misnomer and is certainly not the only problem.

Like I said, if it bothers you that much stop funding it. It's like complaining about animal welfare and then going to KFC or Mcdonalds for some nuggets

/Rant over.

The only way it will ever end is for sky to pull the plug on the premiership. It's their funding that keeps it going, that's why we have a big fuss about deadline days. It's their money that's rolling about and they want clubs to buy more players with it, consequently feeding the giant that brings them ever more revenue. Fans are an after thought to them and i'm pretty sure most clubs could afford to play behind closed doors if they wanted to. If everyone cancelled sky tomorrow, it would go back to how it was. Ceefax and sunday papers.

Introducing the 50+1 rule would be great, fan ownership is definitely the way forward but it's only ever touted when clubs are at risk of going out of business.

Even if we did have fan ownership we'd have weapons like Cliff Ginetta high up lol

Sky Sports have a lot to answer for. Everyone loves watching live games on TV, but things like Deadline Day are a joke. All this nonsense with things like "The totaliser" and how amazing it was when the Premier League spent £1bn on players in the summer as if it wasn't completely down to them.

Now the Premier League is diluted with bang average players on ridiculous money, going for ridiculous fees. Other leagues know exactly how desperate English clubs are and are rightly exploiting it.
