What next for Amartey?

Amartey surely has to be moved to CB. I understand why he was used at RB today, as we have no genuine RB cover for Simmo.

He is a real athlete and ot enough football ability about him to become a decent CB I believe, but not sure how much longer he should be tried as a RB or CM.

I hope we get to see him at CB before the end of the season, but it may have to come in pre-season. If he can make an impact there and we sign Maguire or Gibson, then we could have our future long-term CB pairing!

I still think there is a future for him at CM. We saw at times earlier in the season where he would seem quite nervous about getting stuck in and look poor, but then in the 2nd half he would be all over the pitch like a man possessed. We need that second Amartey all the time and we'd be good.

Wouldn't be a fan of loaning him out just yet.

Other than a woeful first 5 minutes, I thought he was fine after that.

I thought he got better as the game went on.

Surely in a season when Morgan & Huth have been poor most of the time, Morgan now injured and even Wasyl and Benny have played, there must be a reason why he hasn't been played one minute at CB.

Only reason he's still around the first team is because he's a utility player.

Genuinely think he's got the attributes to be a top central defender, shame he's played pretty much everywhere but there for us.

My thoughts exactly. I think Amartey will end up being our Phil Neville / James Milner. A player that fills in a number of positions if and when needed, which can be useful for the club.

I do think that a long run in a team (not necessarily ours) would be beneficial to him. A lot of the criticism that has been leveled at him is fair, but I don't think he's a write-off yet. Sadly for him, he could not make the DCM position his own whereas Ndidi has taken to it like a duck to water.

I also think CB could be his ideal position, if he was given a chance there.

I'd keep him in the squad over King.

Amartey isn't a right back.  Poor recruitment has meant he's been shoe-horned into that roll now and then.

Kingy literally offers nothing on the ball.  If he doesn't pass it straight back to the person who gave it him, he'll look for Robert Huth or Kasper.  Rarely tries a forward pass.  And when he does, it rarely comes off.

At least when Amartey plays CDM, he's quicker than King, arguably better stamina, better jump, better in the air, gets stuck in.  He's not great on the ball from a creative/attacking sense, but neither is King.

I feel that Amartey offers us something else which we need in those tight games for the last 20 mins when we're holding on.  However, I could do with him putting some muscle on.

Congratulations on feeling some kind of vindication for constantly belittling a 22 year old no matter what he does, you must feel immeasurably proud.

Actually loled at this.

My biggest issue with him is his confidence in himself, he seems so frightened all the time.

I think he's got ability and he's got all the physical attributes, he just needs to back himself more often and make quick decisions. It's like he doubts himself and gets caught in two minds, which leads to him delaying what he does and gets caught out.

He got better as the game went on. Second half he was decent. He prevented Lukaku from getting his hattrick when Everton counter attacked on us.

I don't think he was as bad as people on here are making it out.

Basically agree with Babs and Koke.

He was okay and has been whenever called on. Young player with a lot of learning to do but has a lot of the right attributes.

Don't know why selling him or writing him off would enter anyone's head.

Would like to see him given a run at CB though. He's not a full back for me but he played historically for his club at centre half and starts there for his country. Can't be any worse than Benny was yesterday to be fair.

What was he doing for their first goal?

He's an OK squad player. Second half be looked much better.

I'm more concerned about Andy King. With James coming back and the possibility of signing a new CM, I don't know where that leaves King. He was poor again today.

King and Drinkwater were both indifferent but we were never 100% committed to the game and there was a lot more to worry about than those two.

Defensively we were so bad in the first hour, the time when Everton eased down didn't matter.

The best thing that could happen for him, Gray, Chilwell etc would be for us to have a boring comfortable West Brom mid table sort of season for once. For what seems like about the 5th season running we've had drama and a battle, whether it's for promotion or relegation.

It's a lot harder to give young players (and new players) a chance and the time to develop under those circumstances, because unless they are a class above and hit the ground running chances will be limited.

Too early to get on him.  He has good games and bad ones.  He's capable and needs time.  Loaning him out would be a mistake.

I didnt mean to make it sound like i was getting at him. I do think he needs some regular game time.. for the record i think he could become a top player - you just need regular game time for that... Will he get that with us next season?
