Lovejoy Posted 10 May 2017 Posted 10 May 2017 I wasn't sure whether this belonged in the main section or transfers, but I'm reading a lot both on here and social media about players that are out on loan and may be bedded back in to the first team next year, players who seem like good transfer targets, potential free agents etc. Personally, and indeed it's served us well as a club in recent years, I'm a firm believer in having a tight-knit squad and there is no point in stock-piling players. Therefore if we're active in the transfer market and we do give the likes of Matty James and Tom Lawrence a shot in first team picture, we'll surely have to let quite a few move on. So, given that we have no European football next year, what size squad should we realistically have? If we have 22 (assuming two for each position), would they get enough game time? If we have less, would we have enough squad cover? I certainly don't think we need the full quota of 25.

I think we need a full 25 man squad even if it means include the best of the U23s as you can never be sure of when injuries might occur. Even at 2 for each position that you suggest you definitely need 3 keepers.

Chiwell and Ndidi won't need to be included in the 25 man squad, not sure about Gray, filling the squad for the sake of it would damage the chances of any younger players getting through. We can definitely trim it down and utilise the younger players especially without the CL for this coming season. 20 players + Gray, Chilwell, Ndidi, Iversen, Barnes should be enough for next season.

Fair point I was forgetting the younger players don't count.

MPH Posted 10 May 2017 Posted 10 May 2017 One for each position sounds great until we get an injury.. or a stomach bug ravages the squad for a week or so... if we can have 25 and the budget is there to support it then have the full 25... should be fully covered for all mishaps then.

Think it's players who are currently 'under' 21 as per what Babylon said, *or* home-grown. So Schlupp & King both counted as home-grown this year, I believe? Not sure...

No I think you just need 8 "home grown" players, the Under 21 thing is a different rule. "A Home Grown player will be defined as one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21). Clubs are able to supplement their squads with unlimited additional players under the age of 21 on 1st January in the year in which the season commences."

Then a perfectly balanced squad of 25 with cover in every position plus young potential.

Finnegan Posted 10 May 2017 Posted 10 May 2017 There's hardly thousands on loan after a first team place. James will probably come back in the squad which I imagine sends King to the ressies, especially if we add any quality there. Lawrence has a 50/50 chance of making it in to the side, we really don't know at this point. I reckon we'll sell him if we get an offer over 5/6m though. Barnes has a future but he'll blatantly go out to the championship, can't see him being anywhere near the first team. We'll most likely sign a center half, maybe two and maybe a winger if Riyad goes. I wouldn't be surprised if we're way less active than people expect.

GK: Schmeichel, Schwarzer RB: Simpson, De Laet CB: Morgan, Huth, Wasilewski, Benalouane LB: Fuchs, Schlupp, Chilwell RW: Mahrez, Dyer CM: Drinkwater, Kante, King, Inler LW: Albrighton, Dodoo ST: Vardy, Okazaki, Ulloa, Kramaric Could argue we technically started the season with only 21 players if you count Dodoo/Chilwell as U23's, both of whom went out on loan by November.
