is the cowboy boots some kind of euphemism or is it literally he didn't like his footwear lol

The story is that upon seeing his cowboy boots, Cloughie started asking a lot of questions regarding his ‘lifestyle’. Mac then received a bid from Leeds which he chose to accept. Cloughie allegedly put the phone down on him when he found out.

I wonder what 'lifestyle' Cloughie thought cowboy boots signified lol It could have a 70's porn connotation I guess. Not sure what else it could signify except bad taste.

Yeah, but Gary Mac was no Wortho with the ladies mate. Didn't matter what Frankie wore, he was 'scoring' anyway.

My assumption was he thought he was gay.

Think Village People.

Hadn't considered it but that would make sense.

He did sign Justin Fasanhu though, was there ever any rumour going around football about Fashanu being gay before he came out? I seem to remember being surprised at the time.

Not that I recall - I think Fash was firmly in the closet.

This from his Wiki entry:

'His career stalled as his professional relationship with Brian Clough deteriorated; Clough, it would appear, was disturbed by the rumours of Fashanu's visits to gay nightclubs and bars. His goals and then confidence dried up as he failed to fit in with the playing and lifestyle demands of Clough, especially after Clough had discovered his homosexuality and barred him from training with the side.

In his autobiography, Clough recounts a dressing down he gave Fashanu after hearing rumours that he was going to gay bars. "'Where do you go if you want a loaf of bread?' I asked him. 'A baker's, I suppose.' 'Where do you go if you want a leg of lamb?' 'A butcher's.' 'So why do you keep going to that bloody poofs' club?"'[10]

Wow. Changed days indeed.

Didn't realise he banned him from training.

@Countryfox spill the beans then

Hello ...    this is the real Countryfox here, not that pale Buce-like imitation.

Anyway, this is straight from the horses mouth, (a very senior club official), and I’m not adding, changing or sensationalising anything.

The deal was was all set to go through and Mac was up at Forest about to rubber stamp it when in walked Clough ...   he then launched into a tirade telling Mac that Nottingham was a far better town and had a far better football club ...   he then went on to say that Mac wasn’t as good as he thought he was but needn’t worry he would knock him into shape and get him playing better ...   he was basically slagging him and Leicester off big style.  At the end of Cloughs lengthy speech Mac got up, shook his hand, and said  “Thank you Mr Clough but I won’t be joining your club”  and left the room.  Mac was livid.

Not sure what he had on his feet but there was no mention of it being relevant.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds’ initial £850,000 bid was rejected by the Foxes, which had initially put Forest in the driving seat for the player’s signature, but McAllister didn’t want to go to the City Ground – apparently he wasn’t too impressed with Forest’s supremo.

The story goes that Cloughie was close to signing the midfielder, but after turning up late to a meeting with the player, spotted his cowboy boots and asked a series of pointed questions about his private life.

“It was bad timing. Looking back, I’d have loved to play under Clough in his pomp, but I had options and just felt Leeds were a better fit. Brian wasn’t impressed when I said I was going to Leeds,” McAllister told Four Four Two about his decision to move to Elland Road.
