Charnwood Hubble Bubble at the Fox Cub, Barrow. Not bad given I was told it was bottom of the barrel gear.

Also rated the new red ale Everard's are doing (forget its name) which I tried last night.

Got six lonely weeks in Portsmouth coming up for work, any recommendations of places to quietly get wrecked on decent stout in the area people can recommend?

Guinness at The Foresters in Sheffield City Centre. I had a feeling it was going to be a good pint as they had a retro pelican pump on the bar looking like it was from the 70’s.

Just incredibly creamy and smooth, the best I’ve had for 18 months since I was in Dublin.

The chive sausage and mash gave me indigestion all night but the Guinness was spot on.

Annoys me how Guinness gets a bad rep now cos it’s gone mainstream popular. It’s a brilliant pint when done right.

Diageo have cracked marketing. I’m not sure  if they seeded the split the G challenge but it just gets people talking and subsequently drinking it.

Also leaving it to settle is bullshit but it just separates it as this distinct beer, there’s a mythos around it.

I do drink a lot of it, 4% and it’s smooth - I don’t find it bloating like some say.

Reminds me of the Guinness I had at The Laurieston in Glasgow earlier this year. They have three taps for standard, extra cold and ‘the middle’. Tried the latter on the recommendation of the barman and it was the creamiest Guinness I’ve ever had. Incredible pub, like stepping back in time.

I enjoy a pint of Guinness for sure, but it’s all the bullshit/marketing around it. It’s a corporate/macro beer. You’re drinking the same stuff in the U.K. as they are in Ireland (it’s all imported here from Dublin). It’s a carbonated keg beer that keeps fresh for ages and profile doesn't change. Its like seeking out the perfect pint of Stella.

Maybe I’m just bitter because I’d rather people cared about cask ale which actually differs from venue to venue 😂

Been a few years but Huis was very good when I was last there.  Probably more towards an eatery but there is a bar, decent selection of beers.  Food was excellent.  The hole in the wall I remember being good.  In fact I vaguely remember being surprised at there being a few decent pubs but can't remember names of the others now, sorry.

Chap that owns the place has done a lot of good for the city. Interesting you mentioned the food, a few have said it is hit and miss on that front.

Guinness was traditionally served from wooden casks until the late 1950s. It at least used to be brewed over here in Park Royal where I once worked, but it was all consolidated in St James Gate. As I understand it, Diageo plan to open a 50,000 sq ft micro brewery and culture hub in Covent Garden next year.

No doubt it's got a great brand and history. It's what Bass could have been over here if it wasn't broken up. They added the nitrogen to it in 1959 so what we drink today is completely different to what it was in the first half of the 20th century.

It was really good quality, enormous sausage on a bed of mash with gravy, just went to see the Pretenders at the City Hall after and was on the Gaviscon for the rest of the evening.
