I've not been back drinking in

Leicester for an age.  I'm meeting my wife's family who are Charlton fans at the train station a couple of hours before the game.

Can anyone recommend central pubs that will be okay to visit before and after the match, preferably that do reasonable beer.

They won't be waving their Charlton scarves around but will obviously need to avoid any particularly partisan pubs.

Thank you I'm advance!

Near to the station but further away from the ground, Ale Wagon and Real Ale Classroom are both within walking distance of each other.

Nearer to the ground, Blue Boar, Two Tailed Lion and the Castle are all friendly and within the same sort of crawl. Blue Boar is standout, especially if you can get a seat.

Did the Peak and Briton double on Friday in Manchester. Absolute zinger of pubs. I’d rate the Briton over the Peak though

Ah the BP, beloved of concert musicians.

I think the Briton is now run directly by Heineken after they managed to turf out the old landlord. I take it they're doing a good job for once?

Yeah - not much as changed in terms of interior at all. The bloke behind the bar as well had genuine landlord vibes - took the piss out of someone having Guinness and Black.

Landlords get scarier the further north of Watford you get. Once you get to Glasgow they are positively terrifying.

Broke my January duck in Bologna this weekend. Didn't see too much macro Italian stuff on draught generally. Most bars and for Italian standards, ...pubs tended to have local Italian craft pils on and they were easy drinking although I didn't believe the ABV on any of them, very lightweight.

Was in Whitby at the weekend. Lots of good micropubs and quirky places to drink in. Did Beer O'clock, Whitby Brewery, Meeting Room (converted methodist church) and Esk Vaults. Didn't do any proper pubs but they all looked fairly standard.

Finally got around to the Pineapple, Southampton Arms and Tapping the Admiral, belters the three of them.

Had a great pint of Leatherbritches’ porter in the Pineapple, which felt YLP thread meta.

I live in Hertfordshire (Broxbourne) and the Missus dragged me to the Crown last night, saying "lets walk and feed the ducks" along the canal on the way and leave the car home so we can have a few. About 3 mins into the walk it started pissing down and we were drenched in the 15 min walk to the pub. The Ducks got fed some delightful sloppy bread as we walked there and we had 5/10 food and 6/10 beer LOL. At least they had the log fires burning!

Its actually a nice pub in the Spring/Summer with plenty of outdoor seating but as pub goes, its terrible.

I pop up to Leicester a few times a year to watch football but the plan is to drag the missus there for the first time. What would you say were the best pubs about, food, vibe etc?

If you’re coming up to to watch the footie I’m Leicester, I’d recommend The Crown - in Broxbourne.  You’ll thank me later 👍

'YLP Thread Meta' sounds like an aggressively hopped juicy American pale with a surreal cartoon on the pump clip

A variety of lagers in the new street station spoons pre match yday after I accidentally sent a pic of us (including table number) to another mate. Also had a fried egg, small pot of cheese, apple and a banana

I thought the Brum steward might be more perplexed by the banana

For any London heads, there's a decent new place by City Thameslink called the Paternoster Tavern who do their own keg beer for a very reasonable £5 a pint.

Did the Guinness London tour yesterday which was decent, but overpriced for what it is (luckily I wasn't paying). Diageo don't reveal what hops they use in Guinness as they allegedly want to keep the recipe "secret". Some more clever marketing for the gullible Guinness fanboys. Hops are the most expensive ingredient in beer. They basically just buy the cheapest hops they can find each year as it's mass produced, low quality beer. If you go to a proper brewery they can't wait to tell you what hops go into each beer.
