I was just reading an article on Nick Pope in the Guardian. An England call-up is either imminent or happening. I first saw him at Bury St.Edmunds FC [long story] - second string to a competent but overweight keeper :) . He was a skinny eighteen-year old - playing for their reserve team. He looked ok but destined for low-tier semi-pro stuff. Afterwards he had a decent year at Charlton but then years of loans. He's now playing for Burnley and is just behind de Gea in the 'goals expected' to 'actual goals' stats.

That demonstrates to me just what talent is out there if a club is willing to look for it - shopping at Wal-mart rather than Neiman Marcus.

There was a lot of talk about City in '15- '16 being the new face of soccer - players hired by perceptive scouting at minimum cost in a continuingly hyper-inflated market. What happened then was completely about-face and proved costly and ineffective. Just conspicuous consumption on players who were handy in their own habitat but haven't made the adjustment to the Premier. N'Didi (£17m) and Maguire (£12m+) have been the only real success stories from the post '15-'16 season - Iborra and Silva might come good but the jury's still out. Diabate fits that '15-'16 ethos and as you state - the Club can afford a £2m mistake. But he looks the business - already.

It's been an expensive lesson (which I hope has been learned) about being careful who looks good and who is actually going to turn out good.

Great post - Although I understand the clamour for ready to go signings, I think a signing that develops at the club can actually give the fans more enjoyment and pride. It’s great unearthing a gem.

Absolutely - and United unearthed six diamonds in the early '90s - so it can be done if the will is there.

But you'll never win the league with kids.

He's a bit of a headless chicken. He has some good attributes but doesn't have the intelligence to currently make the most of them. However, there is always a reasonable chance that he will be involved in a goal if he is allowed to come off the bench. Defenders might not read what he is going to do simply because he doesn't even know himself.

I don't see that happening. There's an awareness about his play which Gray doesn't have - even if he misfires it's not going to be about his lack of understanding.

correct ... diabate runs dirrctly into the box. ... either with the ball or hoping for a pass or 1-2

Grey looks to cut in on his right and shoot from distance.

If puel has us playing posession then diabate and players like him (like lingard) are the answer

The ideal balance to a team has  always been a mix of 'old' heads and younger players who will work their guts out to achieve. Like this forum ;).

Probably. I mean,  if I was REALLY unkind, I'd correct both your grammar AND your spelling within that 3 word sentence!

I'm too old and passed caring. But you managed to work out what I meant.

people moaned about him doing that for being selfish and trying to do it all alone

People moaned at him for being selfish when he took someone on and rather than putting a striker in one on one or offloading to someone who could do such think or was generally in a better position he'd just shoot from 30 yards.

See - i can't keep track of who's offending me or who's defending me. Sad, innit -  the decline of a once great mind.

I'll offend you if it makes you feel better...

Oh no, no, no, no, no, no....no. It won't make me feel better. I'm a sensitive hot-house flower -  the slightest hint of chilliness from any source on this forum and all my petals drop off. And, in future, I'll be extra considerate to you - after all you're damned decent to me. As for Sylofox - couldn't give a shhhh....off to bed now. Don't spend too long on here - ruin your eyesight.

So glad I've made your day lollol
