We're in danger of becoming the new notts forest if we don't win something else very soon.

Given where we were at the time, and looking back at our (immediate) troubled past and financial problems/mismanagement, it felt such a ludicrous and slightly megalomaniac statement to make. :D

Still baffles me that we won the league and then decided to completely change our approach to how we operated in the transfer market.

Well that 40 years went quick.

Well time flies by quickly in the world of football and it doesn't take long to become the forgotten men.

Ironically, we won the title despite spending nothing like £180m.

We spent less than £30m in transfer fees on the whole title-winning squad, didn't we, and wages well below the top level?

If anybody wants to laugh at us, they should be laughing at some of the money we've wasted since then....

Good point, I wonder who masterminded  that.

Fair point.

Most probably because we suddenly found ourselves in a position where we were financially able to operate in a different way and the investment was expected of a PL tilte winning club competing in the CL...but your question of WHY change a successful formula is a valid point.

Additionally I would ask that if we intended to radically change direction from our previous transfer strategy, wouldn't it have been a good idea to recruit people at senior level with experience of operating in the transfer market at that level as opposed to continuing to use the people who had been successful working on a shoestring budget?   Its called "Succession Planning"...!

After winning the title I don't think we did change our approach and that's the mistake we made. The big three of Musa, Mendy and Slimani weren't household names, but more signings that had potential. Well this is probably less the case with Slimani who was in the top 10 strikers for goals scored in Europe that year, but I digress. I know that the owners didn't want to sign big ego players to disrupt the squad, which makes sense, but the signings we made were never in a million years good enough for a team that had just won the title. They were more like signings for a team that had just been promoted instead of a team in the Champions League.

Slim and Musa where targets when we beat relegation to push us forward. Yes hindsight and all that. But were they ever good enough to keep us top six.

We ended up paying over the odds for mid table players.

The simple answer was the Club found itself at an unexpected high level with an Off-field set up that did not have the skills and knowledge required for this step up. So transfer dealings have, in the main, been a disaster.  If this will change is doubtful, unless Puel has his own contacts that know how to scout.

I've mentioned in other threads that I will unashamedly bang on about our league win until the day I die regardless of what else we acheive. Therefore, I have no qualms with any Forest fan over the age of 40 doing the same. Those under 40 doing it however are morons.
