wifi wireless garden camera - advice wanted

Recommended Posts

Posted

During the winter I'm living in a City house closer to work which has a river at the end of the Garden. The garden is maybe 100m long and at the moment I can't see the river from the house. I'd like to set up a camera in a tree at the bottom of the garden so that my wife and I can watch the river from the house. The camera needs to be wireless and have a wifi capacity which will send the signal 100m to the house. It'd need to be waterproof and a decent quality with IR night vision if possible. Is there anyone who has any experience of outdoor cameras and would be kind enough to make suggestions of what may be suitable for me? I know this is a long shot but I'm always impressed with the amazing know how and wide and unusual experience that FTers have. It's one of the things that makes FT a great forum.

I'm no expert but 100m seems a long way for wi-fi.

Coaxial cable would be more reliable if you could run it along a fence.

Here you go prof ...    just enlarge the pic below, print it off, stick it to your kitchen window and leave the tap running ...    better than the real thing and much much cheaper ...

Satellite WiFi connection or laser points, both very expensive

Sounds dodgy. Sure this isnt some neighbour's garden you're trying to get eyes on?

How much do you want to spend? This would do the job perfectly but not that cheap (although cheap for the quality!):

2 x Ubiquiti NanoStation AC ( one on your house, beaming WiFi to another in the garden)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ubiquiti-NS-5ACL-NanoStation-airMAX-Outdoor/dp/B079K3HN3T/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1543770998&sr=1-2&keywords=NanoStation+AC

Then connected to a Ubiquiti UniFi G3 Pro (or you could have a normal G3, but night vision is much better on the pro)...

450mbps good for 15km

Ah, it's a swan. I thought it was something else large and white that is occasionally in my back garden.

I'll look into these ideas - was hoping to not exceed £100.

She's not my neighbour, she's one of my students.

Do you have a shed nearby with mains voltage? @FIF because if you do there are a few work arounds.

I don't have a shed nearby but I could put one down there - been thinking of it for sitting watching/reading. There is a power extension (for lights/fridge) but that's all at the moment.

Should I be looking at security cameras rather than "garden cameras"?

Yes, if you can get power down there you might be able to fit an Ethernet switch fed by a power adapter straight into your house. You could then fit a basic NVR and a 1080p IP camera fed from the shed into the Ethernet switch and possibly put up a few cameras around your mansion on the same system.

Id offer you a price for it if it wasn’t in France ?

I'll thank you before looking up and trying to understood everything you've said. Just to be clear it's no mansion, it's a modest town house with a very large garden down to the river - it's not my principal house .
