SpacedX Posted 16 July 2019 Posted 16 July 2019 ...Since the launch of Apollo 11. The Saturn V was an absolute beast. 33 million newtons of thrust at liftoff, generating 7.5m tons of thrust and 165,000,000 BHP. Carrying 2.5 million kilograms of fuel and oxidizer - the five F1 engines burnt 20 tons per second. The turbopumps that delivered this were driven by a 55,000bhp gas generator...that's approximately 60 of these... Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins were perched upon a 363 ft atomic bomb and had it exploded it would have done so with a force equivalent of half a kiloton, or about 1/26th the size of the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. Charles Linbergh who was present at the launch had calculated prior to Apollo 8, that The Saturn V burnt a tenth amount of fuel in a second that The Spirit of St Louis consumed during its entire crossing of the Atlantic. Godspeed...
Sol thewall Bamba Posted 16 July 2019 Posted 16 July 2019 I hope Trump's mission to go back actually comes off, imagine the footage they could get nowadays even just strapping a go pro onto one of them walking around on the surface of the moon, it would be incredible.

Hollywood soundstage? - Illuminati confirmed. It was easier just to go there...and Kubrick always said, had he have been responsible, he would have done so on location.
SpacedX Posted 16 July 2019 Author Posted 16 July 2019 These were the Second Stage J2s... The First Stage F1s were obscene...
Izzy Posted 16 July 2019 Posted 16 July 2019 Learning about all this and seeing all the old footage and gear at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida was one of the all time great days. My old man often talks about the night he stayed up and watched it live.
Free Falling Foxes Posted 16 July 2019 Posted 16 July 2019 Astonishing achievement and something quite understandable to boast about......

It's just an easy joke to make whenever someone talks about the moon landings. Technically I'm sure it wasn't easier to go there, but in terms of keeping the lie quiet, it probably was easier. I'm sure building a fake moon service in a warehouse is easier than building a rocket and landing it on a orbiting rock.

Tragically - people do. I'm sure they will materialise soon. 4 minutes ago, Facecloth said: It's just an easy joke to make whenever someone talks about the moon landings. Obligatory, yes. 5 minutes ago, Facecloth said: Technically I'm sure it wasn't easier to go there, but in terms of keeping the lie quiet, it probably was easier. Precisely what I was referring to. 6 minutes ago, Facecloth said: I'm sure building a fake moon service in a warehouse is easier.... A working Saturn V launch pad? - like I say, good luck with that. 18 minutes ago, Facecloth said: and landing it on a orbiting rock. ...Isaac Newton in the driving seat.

Nah. Anyway, on the topic itself...awe-inspiring, majestic and numerous other superlatives can be used to describe the whole thing. IMO it's criminal that we stopped going because of politics and we've not gone back. Hopefully, that will be remedied soon - goodness knows humanity needs something to inspire all of it right now.
RoboFox Posted 16 July 2019 Posted 16 July 2019 Incredible when you hear the stats regarding the power of the Apollo Guidance Computers they were using. We got to the moon and back with 50kb of memory. Around the same as a basic pocket calculator.

I'm not massively into Space and everything but seeing all the stuff was amazing.

fuchsntf Posted 16 July 2019 Posted 16 July 2019 My dad and I stayed up to watch it. If I remember correctly..Granada TV Put out the febuary pre recorded broadcast of Johnny cash at San Quentin..just before the whole moonlanding broadcast..I was 13-14 at the time. Mam couldn't be bothered, but we two found it totally fascinating and rivetting.
