Hack Posted 11 August 2019 Posted 11 August 2019 I know it is only after one game but I think all the concern about losing Harry and not getting a replacement like Tarkowski or Dunk can be put to rest. Evans is a superb CB and could be one of the most underrated in the PL. he is a rock and the foundation for the backline. Soyuncu's performance against wolves was fantastic. People slagging of that he is not ready just have no idea. Guy is a multi times player for Turkey. He has waited patiently for his chance and has taken it with as well as he could. MOTM performance no doubt. he deserves his place in the starting lineup and will get even better knowing he is marked down to start and having more games under his belt. Benkovic is a big young super prospect that I am sure will also make an impact when he gets his chance to play. Rodgers will know what he has with Fillip after being the best player at Celtic before injury. He is going to be a very good if not exceptional talent. Then we have club legend Wes Morgan. Yes ageing but still an excellent CB for this league and does not deserve some of the comments he gets on this site. He will always put in a positive shift when called upon and can be relied on. We are well covered at the back and you can probably add Amarty as a 5th CB. So i am convinced the back line is going to be a net positive, maybe that extra winger (if we play with them) is the place to spend some of the Harry money.
st albans fox Posted 12 August 2019 Posted 12 August 2019 I think it was significant that amartey didn’t get his move to Sheffield Utd. he is pencilled in as emergency CB cover - perhaps carabao cup involvement ?

Poirot would be Probe of me.... So we signed a new right back to carry on playing Amartey there? He was the man under a different manager with different tactics. Under Rodgers the full backs bomb forward and Amartey isn't that type of full back, hence why we spent £8m on Justin.

Some of us were never in doubt that CB was our deepest position in the squad. You can add a number of players from the U23s who are not far from the big time too. 1 hour ago, Facecloth said: Nah we signed Justin for that. He wouldn't be the first signing in error. He's young and we'll see how he progresses. Seemed rather slow in pre-season and I was surprised that he was on the bench instead of Fuchs yesterday. I think he's a long way from good enough for the Prem yet.

Well BR disagrees with you as he obviously thinks he's good enough or he would not have been in the bench. I know whos opinion I value more.
Sol thewall Bamba Posted 12 August 2019 Posted 12 August 2019 I like Evans a lot but I'm looking forward to the day that Calgar and Benkovic line up together

Not sure why you're putting your opinions on this forum if you think the only one that matters is BR's either. btw - it's on the bench (not in the bench), in the bin. Just to make your day I also think BR was wrong to take Hamza off and played Maddison and Tielemans wrongly too. No need to tell me that you value BR's opinion more than mine there either. You have reached the maximum number of posts you can make per day. Edit: To answer Ric. I'd have taken Youri off, it just wasn't his day, seemed lethargic and his passes weren't coming off. Possibly under the weather?

Who would you have taken off for Barnes out of interest? Choudhury had a half decent game but Ndidi was superb playing as the DCM. Maddison and Tielemans had off days and need to work closer together as we've seen them do successfully last season. I'd probably have dragged Maddison but Choudhury is a work in progress further forward and it would have been a brave call.

I'd have put Fuchs on the bench based on what he did pre season ... in fact I'd have taken Chillers off and brought him on, perhaps half time or maybe just after. His ability to put in some decisive passes, score a goal after our corners are headed away .. not to mention his throws ... may have made a difference.
murphy Posted 12 August 2019 Posted 12 August 2019 Good thread. I wonder why none of us thought to bring this up before.

Chillers didn't look right yesterday and that was obvious from early on. Fuchs has never let us down so there was no risk.
Clever Fox Posted 12 August 2019 Posted 12 August 2019 If Soyuncu kicks on as it looks like he will and we can get Benkovitch fit and ready it will be interesting to see want BR does. Evans is very steady But we really need Benko's extra height in defence now that Maguire is gone. If the new lads work out and gel together I'd expect to see Evans take Morgans reserve place while Morgan slips away next season. But for now we need Evans experience of the Premiership for this season to guide them, so it might be a case where Soy or Benko share a place with Evans. While they get up to speed.

Was far, far too deep, often as deep as the CBs, meaning we were outnumbered in midfield, 2v3. At half time I expected Choudhury would come off for Barnes, and was surprised it took another 20 minutes or so for that change to happen. Out of everything, I think this also shows that Maddison on the wing is just not effective. He was so much more involved when he was moved centrally.

Justin cover both position as full back. It would be a pointless signing if Fuchs was getting ahead of him. My mate went to the Rotherham friendly game and was very impressed with Justin, he said he was the best player on the pitch. I'm very happy with the Justin signing, he's still very young and making the transition from L1 player to PL player. He fits the profile of players I want my club to sign that aren't first team players. I'm happy to have half a dozen or so players that are very young with great potential who want to be forcing their way into the first XI. Justin looks like he fits the bill for me and with his ability to play both full back positions should get a good amount of minutes this season.
Houdini Logic Posted 12 August 2019 Posted 12 August 2019 Evans for £3.5m. A year on and that fee just seems unreal
