As for Thomas, you would have to question what his orders are and that sometimes depends on the system and who he has in front of him. He certainly can attack if required to because he was formerly a winger at Leicester City and only converted to a fullback initially in training with the first team due to shortages and injuries. He subsequently did well and was going well until messed about by a certain manager.

JJ was just as boring and negative on the left under BR and Enzo.  He played exactly like Thomas does now.  Calls for the ball, sends it back the apologises to the winger.  Barnes and Mav barely for a forwards pass or support from him and Thomas is the same with Mav and Monga.

I don’t remember Thomas ever being an out and out winger. He’s been a fullback for the last 5 years at least and a defensive one at that.

Vardy’s goal against Ipswich last season on the final day would suggest otherwise. JJ is 100 times the player Luke Thomas is!

This guys application and football ability is a joke. Made his debut for us over 5 years ago. I know many Boro and Blades fans that think he’s horrific too. 
 

The problem is not with the academy; it’s with the apparent reticence to sell off those not at the level (ie hamza, Thomas, McAteer)

Technically hes not bad but hes not athletic enough to be a full back at this level in 2025. Hes as quick as Vestergaard. All top clubs have rapid, mobile full backs that can bomb on

He hasn’t made a first team appearance as a winger that’s quite true, he was a winger whilst in the academy etc but was initially just as to stand in as a fullback in training with the first team due to shortage of numbers and started from there.

I’ve been saying it for a very very long time. 
 

He and McAteer are not good enough and it’s quite baffling that both of them have the same issue with no real pace or strength.

He didn’t invert, he played as the non attacking fullback in Cifuentes 5 back 5 forward attack when on the ball with Justin playing the attacking fullback role on the right. Despite his deeper position he was continually caught out by a long ball played into his channel.

Would love to know when he was this winger tbh. Under 12’s? Absolutely nothing about him would surly indicate an attacking winger when he close to adult years. Your story does seem a bit illogical- surely when a stand in fullback was needed in first team training, the academy would’ve provided a fullback rather than a winger?
