This is turning into the absolutely optimal platform for Brook to come in and cause utter mayhem later.

... which means he'll probably be out for a golden duck.

I was thinking this. Him and Smith could go berserk. All depends on when they're in I suppose.

Can always tell when England are going along nicely by the amounts of posts in here lol

Most in control we've probably been all series. Opportunity to go big and only bat once, but still plenty of time for a collapse.

It was never in doubt anyway but Crawley/Pope timing a decent innings to keep them in the side again.

Would love to know if there’s anything going on inside Brooks head

The numbers show that there clearly is talent there, but sometimes he is deeply frustrating.

You almost called it! Shame as he should have been cashing in here.

This is really really good from England today, it's everything the team has been criticized for not doing in the recent past. Aside from Brook, no one has played a silly shot and they don't need to. Just keep batting the day and get the biggest lead you can and give yourself two days to bowl them out - wicket still looks pretty flat at this stage, we need to knock the stuffing out of them.

It's amazing to me how little credit Root gets in Australia - he's scored hundreds everyone, and lots against them, except he's not got one in Australia, that's literally the only thing to tick off. He's an unbelievable talent, we're so lucky to have him.

This test and series is done. England could post a huge total by middle of 2nd session tomorrow and then put us into bat. Day and a half to bowl us out. Can't see us getting another 250-300 in the 2nd innings.

Really hope whatever happens down under Root can put to bed the 'no hundred in Australia' stat to bed this winter.

Really under-appreciated in English sporting terms.

Should he get a ton there and eventually overtake Tendulkar - stating the obvious here but there can be no arguments that he’s the greatest batter of all time.

Previous discussion here seems to show that comparing eras in that way is a very dangerous game...:D

Certainly the best Test batter since Tendulkar, though.

You’re probably right, but for me there can be no argument. Especially when this is the hardest era to play in with the quality being so good.

I've said my piece on the matter before because to me the numbers are abundantly clear, but I won't clog the thread up repeating it.

Fair enough. Greatest bowler of all time? lol

It’s an interesting topic this and certainly something that has crossed my mind many times. I think the toughest era was the mid 90s up to the 2010s. The quality of most test playing nations in them days was there, even a Zimbabwe team with the likes of the Flower brothers, Heath Streak etc could get a result. Now, unfortunately, it seems like there are 5 countries that give you a good standard of test match cricket, the rest are tosh.

Root is one of the best ever. Agree he's probably the best since Tendulkar and that era. Kohli and Williamson probably on a par just behind him.

Hope Root does break that Aussie drought.

Brilliantly controlled these last couple of days. Mentally done India over the course of it

Also quite like dragging them in again to bowl tomorrow morning, will be even more demoralising.

Root is genuinely world class but also has the luxury of playing for a side that plays a lot of matches. Potential world class players in South Africa, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, even New Zealand won't have the chance to rack up huge numbers now.
