Dawson added to the squad....

I think that's the right pick, it's barely spun all series so having him at 8 gives us the option to drop Woakes and potentially play 3 out and out quicks or Cook. Also he's a very good one day bowler so he'll be fine if they try and get after him I think.

Maybe something like this at Old Trafford.

1. Crawley

2. Duckett

3. Pope

4. Root

5. Brook

6. Smith

7. Stokes

8. Dawson

9. Atkinson

10. Carse

11. Archer

Batting down to 10 really which would be great, Carse showed the value of lower order runs in the last test.

Argument to say Bethell in for Pope imo. They won't change it, obviously, but we know what Pope can (and more importantly can't) do, whereas would be good to get a look at Bethell against a top quality attack in order to form a better judgement for the winter.

If Pope goes would you have Bethell in?

That Tandoori lamb rump and samosa sounds absolutely gorgeous.

England fined 2 points for slow over rates.

I really don't understand how that's calculated - I'm aware they cut out the batting teams stoppages but feels strange to me that its only England that have fallen foul of it. Would love to see a breakdown of it.

Maybe we just have such a bad reputation for it now .

And aren’t really bothered by getting fined either .

It's a shame, this team has a great shot of being number 1. It's already way harder for us given we play more test cricket than anyone else and play all the top teams.

Like you say, maybe they're not that arsed.

The BBC article makes it sound like it was on Day 2 of the test with Stokes alluding to fast bowlers being used more which takes longer, but ultimately accepting the punishment.

I thought it was all averaged out, especially for the bigger sides.

I'd say Aus and Eng have the tougher teams to play, marginally - WI, NZ, SA, Bangladesh and India. With Aus not playing Pakistan and SL, and with Eng not playing SL and WI.

India don't play Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The points system is weird anyway. Rankings are based on percentage points compared to matches played as opposed to actual points gained. I guess that favours the smaller sides to make it more equal?

Reading up a bit more on the time thing, there's a 60-second clock between overs to be bowled, and timers in place for drinks break.

Sounds like umpires need to be a tad more disciplined with it all, for any side.

Fines don't seem to be working as overs per hour is on a constant decline, on average over the years.

Have the penalty as runs conceded as that'll be something players take much more seriously...

Yeah I have a bit of a problem with the ruling as in england you're always going to bowl more pace as its your best chance of winning the game - i still don't get it as 22 overs were lost in the first 2 days and india were bowling for roughly 2/3 of that - they lost 7 on the first day, on day 2 they lost 15 and I can't remember the lost overs on that day, but having sat through the whole day it was the day when Gill had a massage and Pant got drinks on 4 minutes before tea.

It's so confusing and given the BCCI has such a strange hold over the ICC its feels a bit weird to me - this from the BBC sums it up quite well tbh. Im pretty anti BCCI in general, they don't care about the state of the game as long as its strong in India which i think is poor for the overall picture.

And I think the point on it being harder is England play 16 matches at least every cycle, and in addition play the most t20. Means more injuries are likely and its harder to field you strongest team.

I agree BCCI have their biases and hold a lot of power. Over years it's grown because of the IPL and the lure that has.

But ECB don't help themselves either when it comes to cricket in this country. Shite like The Hundred taking priority over how Ashes is diarised, not having Ashes matches at Headingley any more and nothing north of Notts. Adding all those T20 matches in and sometimes not having test warm up matches for big series.

There's an imbalance, sadly. And probably indicative across the whole of test cricket. I've heard lots of pundits and commentators mention how test cricket needs to be prioritised. They're not wrong but they need to back it outside of the euphoria and entertainment within a test match in the past week or through this series.

Make the tests more accessible (read: cheaper) for fans to attend and you'll have more interest in it as opposed to just the Eng/Aus or Eng/Ind games.

Completely agree on stuff like the hundred....

The counter argument on tickets is they regularly sell out first four days....they didn't last summer though so hopefully they take note of that. £160 for a day at lords is embarrassing to be honest.

Re. Over rates. This video is well worth a watch.

They have it right IMO. Over rates should be the duty of the umpire. They need to do a lot more to get the game going and the amount of completely unnecessary breaks are taking away from paying customers.

I agree with Broad in that player shouldn't care about them but Shubman Gill being treated for a back injury on the pitch while he's a fielder, drinks breaks either side of designated drinks breaks, glove changes, ball changes etc. Umpires should be much firmer on ensuring the game moves along. It feels like umpires have less and less authority.

I agree that over rates should never come before the quality of play but there is a lot that could be done to speed the game up.

I still don't understand why Test cricket starts at 11am over here.

Start at 10.15. It may not help the over rate, but at least there's more scope to catch up.

10.30 after May - at least. County matches do it (and they are the holy grail imo). But for some reason Cricket is constantly trying to shoot itself in the foot.

Yep. Cricket has moved on in so many ways, other than addressing the most basic  one…….start & finishing times. Either that or drop it to 85 overs per day. At least then public know what they have a chance of not being disappointed (obviously, the tickets will be the same price though !)

I've noticed that the T20 crowds are down this year. There's not much marketing for the T20 any more - but it was packed back in the day. I do hope the ****ing hundred hasn't spoiled what was quite a nice little earner for the counties.

And apparently the quarter finals are during one of the England matches.

Wish we had someone with calmness of Rahul at the top of the order.

Solid first hour from India, looks like another big effort from the bowlers.

Woakes has bowled well and unlucky to miss the edge a few times. Archer was played pretty comfortably.

You'd be fuming if you'd spent the first hour queuing outside too. Not hard to get everyone in is it?
