Post Brexit Shopping at LCFC Club Shop on the Internet.......

Recommended Posts

I am having an interesting situation with LCFC Club Shop / DHL and was wondering if anyone can help?

Last week I purchased a Rain Jacket over the net valued at UK60 plus UK15 shipping costs (to Austria).  So I assume I have paid UK VAT?

I received an e-mail today from DHL - bless them  - and they are trying to extort an additional Euros 34.75 out of me described as import duty into Austria.

Has anybody else had a similar experience?  Can any Tax experts on FT confirm what DHL is demanding is correct?

I have contacted LCFC shop to see what they say and are currently awaiting a response. Nothing was mentioned at the check-out stage.  I have also told DHL to have a re-think.

Any help appreciated!

My guess is that this, unfortunately, is an Austrian import tax and not one that the club can help with.

I think there's an agreement in place with most EU countries, as when (pre Brexit) I order items from within the EU I'm not charged any additional import fees. However, whenever I've ordered from USA or Israel I'm usually stung with a UK import fee.

Oh and the majority of that fee is the courier's processing fee, the tax usually isn't that much.

Maybe you're seeing the fallout from the UK leaving the EU?

Thanks.  DHL describe it as a Import Duty not a processing charge. Waiting to hear from them.    LCFC should make reference to this on the web-site and not charge UK VAT.  There is no way any customer would pay UK100 for this jacket!

I am thinking with the Corona situation, the respective Governments have far too much on their plates to worry about things like this which is fair enough.

Or maybe just taking advantage of the fact that we've left the EU. It certainly wont be the first time companies use a big change to bump up their revenues.

It may be genuine but it'll be happening.

We're in a world where people are supplying fake vaccines to make a few quid.

Thanks. On checking the Austrian Government Site, it looks like DHL do not know the laws.  But LCFC need to include something on the Shop site for Overseas customers under 'FAQ' and stop charging VAT - if VAT is payable at Country of destination.

It's a customs charge since Brexit, many people are getting a bit of a shock when things they have previously ordered are now being charged extra.

Thanks. The Article is behind the pay wall but my own checking on the net says up to a value of Euros 150 VAT only is charged.  So you would think LCFC ship to Europe without VAT being charged and the customer then pays VAT on the net value of the goods plus shipping.  If the value is above Euros 150, then duty is apparently applied?

Anyway I am awaiting news from DHL and LCFC Shop.

This will kill small UK business that export to Europe and little wonder that people buy hooky copies in SE Asia!

Think it's if you order something worth less than £137 or so then you get hit with an import tax. I believe there are ways around it as another company I use managed to bin it off for a mate, don't know if it's dodgy or what though.

Thanks.   If we get rid of Slimani this window may be the Club Shop will give me a discount?

LCFC On line commerce Team have been brilliant this morning - very helpful:appl:

I believe the double VAT charge is being looked at by the Club's Legal Time and I have also suggested they alert Overseas Customers on the Shop Link to check local charges before ordering anything.

The Austria end of things is obviously nothing to do with the Club and I am waiting news from DHL on how they think an additional charge of 43% is correct on a rain jacket valued UKP60 plus UKP15 shipping.   So much to no tariffs Boris!!

In case any body is the slightest bit interested (which I doubt).  I have the answer.

LCFC charge UK VAT at point of ordering.  DHL collect Austrian VAT (20%) upon receipt in Austria.  DHL then charge 16.75 Euros dressed up as a 'service' charge, this as UK outside of the EU.  Nice little earner for DHL:thumbup:.

I think the Club should warn Overseas Customers in advance of any purchase that DHL (their allotted Courier) charge this and they (the Club) should not be charging VAT at the UK end,  wheN sent outside of the Country.  King Power should know all about Duty Free sales:dunno:.

Moral of this story for any Euro-Foxes is, avoid buying on line from the Club Shop unless you are on a 'Slimani' wage.

This is going to kill many small UK businesses that export to the EU.

This is the DHL that is the official logistics partner?! That really is very poor. Sort them out LCFC ffs.

Surely VAT is or is not a legal obligation?

By which I mean, either legally they are obliged to charge it or that, if foreign purchases are exempt from VAT (because that's a UK tax of UK citizens), then if you charge it, you are doing so illegally?

I find VAT bizarre. The money I use to buy stuff was already taxed when I received it, why do I have to pay tax to spend it as well?

Well I think the e-commerce Team may have screwed up.  I have pointed out that King Power probably know a bit about 'Duty Free'.   To pay double VAT cannot be correct as why have Duty Free shops at Airports?   The DHL charge is a rip-off.  So if you buy on line and you are an international customer, DHL squirrel over 33 Euros off you for a sending a package that weighs less than 'Slimani's wage packet.

RIP European sales of Merchandize out of Leicester.  Good deal Boris:thumbup:

What's Boris got to do with DHL? I'm not defending him, btw, I didn't vote for his party. I'm guessing that DHL' s euro business will be dropping off if they're the only ones ripping off customers.

Having checked the DPD website and the UPS website it looks like they aren't the only ones. Guess we'll all have to get used to these kind of fees.

I thought you pointed the finger at the LCFC commerce team :dunno:

As stated, The service charge is the brokerage fee charged by DHL for collecting and processing the Austrain VAT. LCFC should refund you the original VAT you paid in the UK. As you will be paying Austrain VAT to DHL.

I ordered a few things and shipped over here to Canada. I had read about dhl in the past being cheeky coonts but forgot this time. I got my notification it had arrived next day (amazing service) but before they could release it i had to pay $30 CAD (£17 or so). Apparently it was  custom import fees that they already paid for on my behalf. So when it comes into canada they pay the brokerage fees for me and then i pay them (DHL). I cant get away from the custom fees but DHL puts their own markup for doing so. Cvnts.

Last time i bought from lcfc it was cheaper to get it delivered to my brother in Chesterfield  and have him ship it to me via regular post. Much cheaper!

On a side note when they delivered my package there was another package that had stuck to mine and the delivery guy didnt notice. When i brought the package inside i noticed it and called DHL to report it. I said send your driver back to get it. They said that they would.  They followed up with me two times in the days that followed asking if anyone had come by, but nobody came. I left it out front for well over a week. We even called the person who it was supposed to be delivered to as her name and addres was on it . She called dhl and they did fuk all about it. I still have her package over 6 months later. I feel bad as it was a gift meant for her mum. I wasnt about to pay for it to be delivered when they fleeced me on the import custom brokerage dues and neglected to pick it up.  I feel really bad and debate about forwarding it but meh. Its literally just some face masks the lady had ordered from new jersey in America.

The lady had our number but never called us back.

The Canadian mentality in me feels extremely guilty of course. SORRY EH!
