So nothing doing? Shame we've moved on from the days of dvds

I remember buying the video after the 3-0 vs Man Utd, when Alan Smith and Laurie Cunningham were playing for us

Have you only just realised how bad he is? Slow, cumbersome with no defensive abilities whatsoever

Oh come on now, Harry is a lot better than he showed yesterday and he had some excellent games for us but he is not a great CB . Man. Utd. paid far too much and they weren't really that desperate. They had Smalling who I still think is better.

Pretty much agree. We managed to convince them, with a little help from the media, that they were getting the English van dyke which then made them become irrationally desperate to sign him.

If he was still with us, he would be slightly ahead of Vestegaard in the pecking order but behind Soyuncu, Evans and Fofana

The fact that Maguire and Stones have over 90 caps between them illustrates how substandard international football is. They are decent players but by no means in the top echelon of defenders.

they are only 'decent players' because Southgate usually plays with seven defenders in the team - five defenders and two defensive midfielders

True but him leaving allowed Soyunću his chance. I feel him leaving did allow us to improve our defence however.

I think some of it was about saving face. Historically, Man Utd could pick and choose any player they wanted but in Maguires case they come up against a club that said no. Once it became public knowledge they couldn't back down and send a message to the mighty Man United fan base they couldn't afford a Leicester City player. They were determined to push the transfer through whatever it took to maintain their status. King Power played the situation perfectly.

I agree however for us  he gave away more goals from set pieces than anyone else on the planet, couldn`t organise a p up in a brewery, never mind a defence, personally was very happy to see him go and couldn`t believe the price

Doesn't Schmeichel say 'I am just waiting for you to give a cheap yellow card to us' and the Pawson replies 'Oh, its gonna happen, so you can moan'?  lol Can't hear the rest, its all a bit muffled. Unreal that Matic did not get a yellow in that game though.

According to the Merc...

Schmeichel said to Pawson in the tunnel ahead of the second half: “I’m just waiting for you to give a cheap yellow card to us."

Pawson replied: "I’m just waiting for you to moan."

But Schmeichel was unperturbed: "It’s going to happen. You can’t give Matic one…"

That's a good point. I think it highlighted that the so called big clubs couldn't push the smaller guys around anymore.

I think that's what eventually tipped the balance regarding the super league. The wealth of the premier league would have been a concern for Europe's big clubs for a while, but when clubs like ourselves started to have greater wealth and power it was a threat they wanted to snub out.

True but they still got the player they wanted. As did Chelsea with Chilwell and Man City with Mahrez. Clubs like us may be able to squeeze a bit more cash out of the big clubs but they will still almost always get the players they want. Don't forget the role of agents in all this too. They make a lot of money out of transfers and it is in their interest for players to be moved for big fees. Cut them out of the game completely and we'd all be better off.

Now we have Newcastle who will be able to buy or try to buy pretty much anyone they want. I'd like to see a spending cap in place of so many million, the same value for each club and a wage cap too. Really has become ridiculous and obscene now.

What the big boys do is to buy up as many players as they can so as to deprive the 'smaller' clubs of these, thereby weakening them and making it easier for the former to dominate. Examples of such players are Mahrez and Chilwell. There should be a ruling that if, say, a player does not play in a certain number of games a season, they would have to transfer to another club the following season on a free. This would never happen, of course, because the big teams.

True, but it took Riyad two years to get his move. Maguire had to wait an extra window. They don't get them easy anymore, they are held to ransom, allowing the smaller clubs to use the money to progress, it's no wonder that spurs and arsenal wanted part of the super league they are already suffering to better run "smaller club".  Also in plenty of cases the move doesn't happen, look ar Kane to man city,

Absolutely. But I wonder if that viewpoint is largely held by older fans?

I sometimes suspect younger fans see the astromonical wages as some sort of status symbol for the clubs?

You've really arrived in the big time if you have a squad on 10s, even 100s of thousands a WEEK!

Totally barmy.

If Kane was playing for us or Villa he would have gone. I do agree with you but the facts are those players still left us though we got good fees for them.

Yes you probably have a point. I'm definitely what one would call an "Older" fan. Of course it is so much a global product now with social media so much more involved.

Man U have the worst set pieces record this season in the PL I believe as well.

Maguire it’s quite simple really - playing a deep line, he’s fine but you try being a bit more progressive, he will get caught out. The Varane signing will help him a fair bit this season.

Either way it was superb business for us and we maxed out on the transfer fee
