Vardy has made it permanently into the text books. My son’s youth footy team’s in northern california has a head coach (a Geordie) who came back from a state wide coaching clinic where they watched videos of Vardy and cited him as a key example of how strikers should play on and off the ball!

amazing stuff!

You can certainly try to learn, but to perfect it like Vardy has, you also need his 100% sharp focus (he never misses any bit of opportunity), his 100% determination (he never gives up running), his short distance acceleration (this is where his real advantage comes in), his amazing quick feet (his ability to be able to switch left and right at an instant in his runs is just natural talent that cannot be learnt) and his game intelligence (he is always trying to think ahead there and then rather than just doing it out based on memorized moves which makes it extremely difficult for defenders to defend against). So while Harlaand can pick some skills up from Vardy, even him can never be Vardy. Coincidentally, Daka is probably the closest to Vardy in terms of his physical abilities. Hopefully he can learn as much as he can from the man before the man retires.

Unreal isn't it really. This is from the most exciting striker on the planet at the minute.

But Vardy has also been regularly mentioned by top coaches including Guardiola and a Klopp as one of the world’s best too. I would dare say if Vardy plays for Barca or Man C, he would be even better (for a start he would have a lot more service) and he would genuinely be seen in the same light as Salah, Harlaad, Suarez, etc.

We are lucky to have him.

...you have to take a look at his style of play!!!

It would not have worked for most clubs, they would have had to adopt their philosophy to accommodate him, and that was never going to happen.

The thinking was we were not going to have another player with Vardys attributes because it ties us into a certain type of play. Picking up Daka was a surprise as the versatility of Odsonne Edouard was the transition player we needed.

Vardy's style was not something that England was prepared to compromise on especially with Harry Kane the more versatile and prolific player around.

I know you mean well, but I think the reference to England does not give your point of view much credit - you are talking about Southgate here. Yes Kane is great but I don’t think Vardy is below his level. It is a misconception that Vardy is one dimensional. I disagree. His game and tactical intelligence is top notch, his passing is under appreciated, he has an ability to run at defenders and also put a decent cross in. Barring injuries this season he has been getting better with age.

When he plays as a front 2, he is still very good. It is actually because of his intelligence that gives coaches the option of playing a lone striker as effective as he can! But just because he is being utilized that way does not mean he cannot play other roles! I reckon he would do quite well playing with Nacho or even Daka.

I like to think I’m reasonably balanced and objective. Both kane and Vardy are more than just prolific goal scorers and their all round game has definitely improved with maturity. Vardy more than he gets credit for. On their day they are both match winners. Outside the Leicester community I don’t feel that Vardy gets enough credit and certainly should have got more caps for England. This is not just because of his late entry to the top level game but because it takes time to build up the visibility and recognition that is so crucial to catching the public and National team managers attention. Vardy should be talked about alongside great strikers like lane and Aguerro.

ok now for the biased bit. Vardy is a better players than kane and plays for a better club. Had Southgate played him more in 2018 we would have lifted the World Cup. 😀🏆

...it is noticeable that Vardy's style has changed!!!

He always had the ability to supply, it was just that he needed himself to be in the box at the same time to get on the end of it, he has always had that.

His movement has never been a problem, he is an intelligent enough player, but he played in a team set up to play to his strengths. He stays on the shoulder of the last defender, get that right and it is lethal, you take him away from that and in an England team looking to pass and retain possession and his movement and what he brings are effectively negated because, there is no quick ball to release him and his game is at odds with what the National manager is trying to achieve.

I was not alluding that Kane was in anyway a far better player, he is a better player, because he can adjust to what is needed for the team.

I don't want this to decend into a Vardy is greater than Kane or why are you putting Vardy down situation, but if there was a choice, of having Kane or Vardy upfront for all these years, and it would be Vardy every time.

It's interesting that if Vardy had stayed in an academy system (I remember reading he shot up from 5'2 to 5'10 after he was released) he most likely wouldn't be the player he is now. There's a case to be made if he was a more 'polished' player at a younger age - he'd likely have ended up a 10 goal a season Championship striker instead.

His directness, pace and aggression are what capitulated him from the 5th division to the 2nd and then the top. A more conventional player loses some of that edge.

...if you were to have placed him in an environment where discipline and structure was imposed,  he probably would not have become the player that he is!!!

If you compare him to Ben Marshall and the way they viewed their individual careers, you will see that Marshall still retains the same mentality as he did as a teenager, and in someway, unsure why he failed to change and accepted he would have to change his approach to off field friendships, in order to achieve his goals.

Perhaps Pearson and Shakey have had a bigger input in his career more than we can believe.  The right place at the right time has often been said to be the catalyst for some success, I  am sure it came into play when we brought him in.

Spot on this. When you hear Marshall speak you feel you've got a child in a man's body. I'd imagine this is because his idea of hard work is having to wait 10 minutes for his mates to turn up to play pool and getting pissed. Vardy could easily have gone down that same path, he seems to have similar personality traits, but instead he tasted the cold harsh reality of life and that's what has made him what he is today.

Seriously, is there still the likelihood that the club will get a statue for Vardy commissioned?

We’ll we’re probably not going to afford the £75m release clause but I guess erecting a statue before he arrives might persuade him to move from Dortmund.
