Like an actor getting stereotyped into a particular role I only see Smith as an EA Sports FIFA commentator, there is no banter, he uses the same cliched one liners, no interesting fillers he’s almost robotic in his commentary.

Could not disagree more. Probably the closest we've ever been to a one man team was in his final season here after Lineker had left.

Regularly used to get 15-20 goals and probably 10+ assists (they obviously weren't measured then) in a team which was mostly fighting relegation from the top division.

Can only think of Vardy, Lineker and Worthington who were better forwards for us since the 70s. And I'm not really sure I'd genuinely rate Worthington above him when push comes to shove, as I was never the biggest fan of Worthington's lazy style, in a big game I'd probably rather have Smith.

Agree to disagree, as I say, he was a good player (I’m old enough to remember him) but in the list of all players (not just limited to strikers) he’s lower on the list for me. Plenty ahead of him. The majority of premier league winning squad for a start!

I think you're massively stretching over nothing here.

When was he overly negative about us during the game? I heard people moaning because he predicted Newcastle to win at the start, well... they did. Mostly during the game he just seemed to say the game was boring and flat than anything *overly* negative about us and to be fair, the game was boring and flat.

No problem with people thinking he's a boring commentator, he is. But don't really get why people seem to think he has some sort of vendetta about us and is negative about us all the time so that he can show he's not biased. I think people are just being overly precious to the extreme over absolutely nothing.

Next time he's on one of our games, listen out for how often he states we've committed a foul (that clearly isn't) like the Shelvey one today, or he moans that we've got a soft decision go our way.

Talking of precious, that's literally you defending Alan Smith.

I can’t believe this is actually a thread. Lmao!

The sky commentators are there to make games sound interesting, they come with whatever narrative Sky think the general public want IE: Leicester might win the league lets root for them. Just because it was Newcastles turn no need to get your knickers in a twist. Just take it for what it is and ignore it.

Completely agree with you, Sampson. Lineker and Smith were awesome together and AS carried us, when Lineker left. Vardy is the only one to get near them since. Worthington ON HIS DAY was great - just not that many days!

To surpass them.

He made me chuckle when he said Almiron was a “prolific” striker just when a caption was put up on screen showing he has gone 39 games without a goal or assist

He was a fine player and struck up a good partnership with Gary lineker for a while. As a commentator I do find him difficult

to listen to as does have a very boring voice and delivery. He constantly goes on about leicester vulnerability from set pieces and other topics which have been discussed to death amongst the fans. What he is trying to do is explain to the wider audience of non Leicester fans some of the nuances of the game. He often gets little facts a bit wrong though and comes across as a bit lazy and poorly researched. Still he is better than steve Mcmanaman.
