Anyone here suffer from shin splints?

They're really hampering my running. I thought it was because I've basically done a lot of Kms in a relatively short space of time, but now after speaking to some guys at work I'm not sure if it's my running style and I'm heel striking (as well as the distance). I'm actually going for a gait analysis tomorrow afternoon after workmates recommended it.

When I did 5kms all the time, I never got any pain. It's since I've started doing 15km or more, and probably too soon another longer run.

For context I've done 15km this morning. It took me the first 7km of absolute agony of shin pain before it subsides and I can run normally at pace. Same the other day when I did a half marathon distance, 7km before painless. I probably need to have a good length of time off really and a rest but then I'll feel a bit bored and lazy frankly.

I've tried all the gel or deep heat type stuff. My legs are fine after running and usually the day after, but two or three days later ache and any run is pain until they free themselves up a bit.

I had terrible shin splints when I first started running. I used to heel strike too before I changed to landing on the middle of my feet. The main thing that stopped mine in addition to that was stretching calves big time. Another thing is everyone should take creatine. Since taking that I’ve had no muscle pain anywhere.

Really lost a bit verve and form here. Them two weeks of bad weather in Jan seem to have made the difference. My weight is slowly coming down so hopefully that has an effect.

10k - 55:02

Yesterday I did Wollaton Hall Parkrun - 24:30ish. I was initially disappointed but then I read I came 2nd in my age group. It’s a tough course, three hills and apparently it is k’s 6 & 7 of the Robin Hood Half. Would like to test myself around there again in the summer. It’s the 3rd Notts course I’ve done - all of them been interesting routes but with hills

2 weeks until my next half marathon in Bath. Looking forward to it as its a bit unusual with two massive underground tunnels to run through.

I've been surprised by how difficult it is to improve on my fitness that I'd built up from last April and barely let it lapse all winter but I'm finding it very difficult currently. Got a mingin' cough that is making it hard to breath when I get the heart rate up on quick sessions but hopefully can get round it in a decent time for me.

I’ve now realised the difference between 5k road running and field running, I used to be able to run 5k in just under 23mins around the field at work, now I’m clocking 25mins on the roads and pavement, dodging people, traffic, uneven ground and making turns all adds up, plus I’m a little older (57)

Ran for the first time in probably what's more than 6 months on Saturday, only 3.5k ish - I still feel a bit tight now.

Anyone got any underrated running gear brands they use? Need some new stuff, in particular I want a light weight full zip up hooded jacket but of thin tracksuit type material rather than jacket/waterproof material. Can't find what I want for love nor money.

Ran Barnsley parkrun yesterday off the back of a tough training week and horrendous weather, I felt miles off it. Couldn't believe it when I clocked in just 12s away than my best time around there. This comes off the back of trusting the process of running longer and slower in training with no real speed work in yet.

I've never ran more than a mile...and neither has Usain Bolt. My teenage son routinely runs 12-13 km in his club matches. He doesn't run recreationally at all, just during the matches. Nice to be young...

Completed my first ever 5k today, I'd been lurking in the background of this group seeing people post their times and achievements, trying to get inspired from you lot to be honest!

I'd been wanting to do this for absolutely ages just not had the confidence to do it and I have a tendency to give up. I thought it would've been an embarrassing time, didn't even think I'd get under 30 minutes and got round in 27:58.

Absolutely delighted.

A brilliant time for a first ever 5k!!! Well done you! Maybe try a Saturday morning parkrun next. Beware it's quite addictive though

Week 5 of marathon training (out of 18). Had a bit of a cold but booked my accomodation.

Big tip to everyone - don't do Edinburgh if you like money. The cost for two nights hotel, not even in the centre, could get me a weekend in Europe. Unreal.

Stay somewhere else and train it?

This is exactly the reason why I gave up my marathon place!

Hit a brick wall with running and haven’t run properly for nearly 2 weeks. This dreadful winter virus that has been about has completing knocked me off my feet.

Gave up my marathon place and I’m feeling so demoralised. I’ve got a couple of half marathons on the horizon but thinking about giving them up as well as I can’t get my groove back.

Did my fastest 10km today, 54:17. Nothing special compared to some times in here but I’m pleased. Think the new Asics helped big time.

What you wearing? I'm eyeing up the new Novablast 5s (currently running in 4s)

I have the 5’s. Was wearing Hoka Clifton 9s for my easy runs and the asics are 100 times better. I have seen a massive difference in comfort, speed and ease.

That's all the convincing I need. Goodbye money...
