My son has been on a dating site and has met a Dutch girl who is currently living in Ghana(she’s been there 5 months)

He is telling me that she wants to come to England but she needs to get a visa to come to England and it will cost £620.

Is that right?, why would a person who’s been working in Ghana then have to pay £620 to get a Visa, surely she could just go home back to Holland and then get a flight over?

I’ve told him be very careful, the girl is genuine as I’ve seen him talking on her on video call , but I’m still sceptical

Would love any feedback

Hate to be so brutal here but it has all the makings of a scam.

A family member of mine was caught hook, line and sinker as well by a Nigerian pretending to be American. Similarly this included video calls etc.

If she’s Dutch, she doesn’t need a visa to visit here. A standard visitor visa to the UK costs £100.

If she's Dutch,she won't need a visa.

Just the price of a plane ticket...

If she's Dutch-Ghanese, then most likely.

Be wary this could be a long drawn out known scam..Before parting with money contact relevant Consulates..or else one might keep hearing..money/Funds or papers not received darling please send more...

Just looked it up...Ghana, Nigeria have dating scam sites...Online contacts can last for months, scam documents, airline tickets, even photos of intended travel & Video conferences...

Then the 'sorry delayed' correspondence asking for more money...

Joking aside, Used to get this quite a lot while working in a high street bank.

Had one instance where a young lady was speaking to some guy in Japan who needed money for flights because he spent all of his cash on flights for their date to, wait for it, Foxton Locks.

If something seems too good to be true, it probably is, is something I've lived by since I was scammed by junk mail. It's so easy to fall in to something like this.

Sorry this has happened to him mate, hope he takes it well

A month or so ago I had 3 Chinese women messaging me on whatsapp in what was obviously leading up to some form of scam. I didn’t tell the missus I just enjoyed the attention for a bit

The solution to you problem is simple. First find out her citizenship if she says dutch it's either a scam or she's stupid. If it's Ghanaian and you want to help with the visa fee if it's a genuine cost offer to pay the consulate/embassy/uk government directly. If it's not a scam she'll happily agree or at least try to see if it's possible. Whatever you do don't send the money direct to her unless you confirm with the British government it's a genuine amount and you can't pay them yourself.

To add to this I have a friend who is Thai. I know it's costs a different amount from each country but her visa was barely over 100 pounds all it so it sounds incredibly scammy to me.

Edit - a quick check on the government website confirmed that there is two visas visitor visa which is £100 and a family visa which is £1500ish https://www.gov.uk/check-uk-visa

Surely there's something he can do to almost certainly prove it's a scam. Let's face it, it's almost 99.9% likely to be a scam, but it would be nice for him to confirm it to take any lingering doubt out of the equation otherwise he might always be thinking "what if it wasn't"

Scammers are interested in one thing only, you parting with your cash as quickly as possible.

How about tell her that 'dad' has found out and taken control of the online banking as he's sure it's a scam. Pretend you still don't believe it is a scam and then wait for the instructions to go and get some gift cards from the shop or get the money across in some other dodgy way.

Almost certainly will happen and then 100% scam.

I'm sure FT can come up with some more ways.

Maybe just ask her for the link of where she got the figure of £620 from. If she can't remember or say's she was told vocally send her a link to the .GOV site where it shows its free and see how the conversation goes from there?
