I agree with all of this, but also, don't you think it's also a shit pre-season to travel this much ? it would knacker me out anyway.

I sort of liked how we did our preseason, although it would have been nice to have the Notts game have fans. A little bit of international travel to Belgium, a few days out for those interested, a "prestige" match at the King Power.

Only change I would make is possibly added a game in France/Switzerland while they were in Evian, and maybe another "split" double feature (possible over two days, so the manager is at both games).

Easy on the fans, not horrible for the team, and low carbon footprint.

when your club employs a manager that likes to complain about fixtures and traveling at any given opportunity, deciding to travel 6,000 miles to play a club based 30miles down the road In a preseason friendly might make him look a bit silly

Im looking at you Liverpool

In all fairness, I would imagine he has little say on the matter. The clubs do all that travel to benefit the brand, not the players.

Funny how the article is there to sort of put shame on clubs, yet no mention is given to the club that has done twice as good as the next best team, let alone the rest of the league lol

Don’t forget Villa too… and the price they wanted for going to watch that shite was ridiculous!

Pretty sure we had the lowest distance travelled in preseason in the summer before we won the league, too.

Obvious benefits from an environmental aspect, but it seems to serve our players well when they get a proper break, can be home based and avoid having to spend half of it travelling to games on the other side of the world.

Villa's preseason has been Walsall, Man Utd and Rennes. Nearly 20k mile round trip just for one game in Perth against a side that's a couple hours up the M6 from them.

That's why I said “when your a club that employs a manager that likes to complain"

Fannying about in different timezones and all that travelling can't help players' preparation. I thought Hull was probably a bit far for a midweek preseason game lol

Suits me with us to be honest. Never been arsed about playing those tournaments. The odd foreign trip ala Leuven is decent.

Thing is, Klopp is right that the fixture congestion clubs get is absurd, and getting worse as UEFA keep expanding their European tournaments (and it's gonna be bad at the start of this season because of this ridiculous Christmas world cup). Suppose you're a premier league club in the champions league, you've got 38 league games, 13 Champions League games if you go all the way, up to 8 FA cup games to get through to the final (replays in the 3rd and 4th round), 6 games in the league cup. You go into the season with a possibility of 65 games in a season that is usually about 40 weeks long, successful teams end up playing far too many games in such a short season. And that's not even considering how many international games their players can end up playing with stuff like the nation's league, top players spend 9 months averaging 2 games a week and people act surprised when they look so knackered like Tielemans at the end of last season?

Why he's not taking the issue to the board of Liverpool? He can just refuse to do a circus world tour. But no, it's all about money. After they did their circus Medrano tour he comes moaning. This is their agenda. This Klopp guy is so fake it's embarrassing.

Local friendlies are much better. Fans can get, not too far to go, players don't bother going half way around the World and it's nice to help out the smaller teams.

I was lucky with Hull this season as it's fairly close for me but the prices were excellent too which was great.

He can't really though can he? You massively overestimate the power a head coach (which is what the manager role is nowadays) has. He's not gonna be able to overrule the board and the commercial team when they organise these tours for the money, because they will just turn round and tell him no, the tour is big for revenue and it's happening

This is my point. He comes moaning every time about fixtures congestion. It's the reason I don't care about whatever he says. Is he a big manager with personality and opinion? He needs to bring the matter to the board. He doesn't have the power? I don't care. Then he needs to remain silent and not playing around with our common sense.

Your point is that you're wrong? I mean, odd choice of hill to die on.

Klopp doesn't have power to stop the club doing these world tours, no manager does at any club, so speaking out about player well-being is all he's really got as an option, and it's a good manager who speaks out about how any industry hurts its employees...
