Greatest England Player

Without Hurst we would not have won the World Cup, simple as that.

It's not as simple as that though, is it.

We never know what would have happened if things had been different. For all anyone knows someone else would have scored more goals. Maybe they wouldn't. Perhaps England wouldn't have reached the final. Or maybe extra time in the final wouldn't even have been needed. You can't just subtract his goals to see what would have happened without him. The way it worked out he's the England player who had the most success, but would many say he was England's greatest player? Who at the time would have said he was even the best striker in the squad?

Well, I don't think it's worth talking about maybes and what ifs. What Hurst actually happened, an undeniable fact.

Totally agree, Would Greavsie have scored a hat trick??  If he had played in the group games would we have qualified??  If Sir Bobby hadn’t bagged a brace in the semi’s, would Eusebio have bagged a final hat trick etc. etc…..

You could also add to the if's and but's...

Had the Munich Air Disaster never happened, we might have won a couple more World Cups.

How good would Duncan Edwards have been, alongside his teammates, such as Bobby Charlton?

As touched on, Jimmy Greaves could have started the final and scored 5.

We'll never know.

But for me, Bobby Moore and Bobby Charlton are probably the greatest ever England players.

Gazza has to be up there for pure talent too.

I agree about Bobby Moore and Bobby Charlton. G Banks was great too.

Not sure about the greatest player skill wise but the greatest un-sung hero is surely goalkeeper Tony Lewis who had his arm broken to allow another player, Robert Hatch, to take his position in the 1942 match against the Germans which thankfully they went onto win despite Hatch not being a real keeper making some important saves, talk about taking 1 for the team.

Didn't go on to win.
