Sources: Leicester City in advanced talks with senior man who recently quit Tottenham
Leicester City are in advanced talks to appoint Peter Braund to their recruitment team following his recent Tottenham exit, sources have told Football Insider.

The Premier League are working on deal for Braund to take over as their senior German scout, in a role that would be based in Germany.

Leicester have advertised for the key position as they look to bring in an experienced operator ahead of the January transfer window.

The 2015-16 champions are in negotiations with Braund after identifying him as a strong candidate.

The 56-year-old is available after leaving Tottenham in May of this year, even though database Transfermarkt still list him as working for the London giants.

Braund joined Tottenham in 2017 after two lengthy spell at Man United either side of a three-year stint as Hannover chief scout.

He was believed to be a close ally of former Spurs technical director Steve Hitchen, who left the club in February of this year.

Leicester have had mixed success in terms of recruiting players from Germany in recent years.

The biggest recent success story has been Caglar Soyuncu, who joined from SC Freiburg in 2018 for just under £20million, while Premier League champions Shinji Okazaki (Mainz) and Christian Fuchs (Schalke) also arrived from Germany.

The Leicester transfer team is run by head of recruitment Martyn Glover.

Germany is regarded by the Foxes as one of the key markets along with France, Italy and Spain.

jeez we are so innovative, i don’t think many clubs would think to look for players in those markets.

It doesn't say untapped potential or anything like that, just that it's a key one.

yeah it’s more just funny how they are saying that we think the top 5 leagues might be the key markets 😂

Could have decent knowledge of the 2. Bundesliga or 3. Liga. Could be all sorts of potential down there.

Sadly work permits below the top division are difficult to come by and we aren't using Leuven as a stop gap to gain one for such players.

Except because of Brexit we can’t sign many players from those leagues any longer.

We wouldn’t have been able to sign Kante, Mahrez nor Knockaert if they’d happened post-Brexit either.

We can sign some sexy Mexican and Brazilians though!

I actually don't understand how anybody coming to this country to earn 4/500k plus a year doesn't automatically qualify for a work permit.

Doubtful we’d be able to sign many Mexicans or Brazilians from the German or French 2nd and 3rd divisions as there aren’t many there for the same work permit reasons and most who are are probably dual citizens with an EU nation and therefore have an EU passport or their parents moved when they were kids for other reasons so were settled long-term residents.

They have to be established internationals or have played for an established side’s youth system. The likes of Mahrez, Kante and Knockaert who worked their way up through the lower leagues in those countries could only come to the UK under EU freedom of movement rules, they wouldn’t have been able to if they were Mexican or Brazilian and likely wouldn’t be playing in France if they were.

It says it’s a key position, meaning recruiting the right calibre of person to look at that market is essential. I think you’ve found something in the article that isn’t there, it does say key market but I think that’s a given.

Kante would have been OK as he was at Caen in Ligue 1, but you are right on Mahrez and Knockaert. We also missed out on Amine Adli who was at Toulouse and we were very close to agreeing a deal but it stalled over work permit concerns and he ended up at Leverkusen.

Is it Brexit? Surely now we're out of the EU we can make our own rules up as to who can come in so isn't this to do with our Government/FA/PL restricting access?

Correct, this has been agreed by the FA/PL and government. Scotland for example have agreed different criteria, i.e. easier to sign less established players.

Its probably to reduce the number of foreign players filling up the academies.

There are plenty of average foreign players in the Premier League that could be replaced with British players from the Championship. There is a snobbery within the game about signing British players from the lower leagues as opposed to spending big from abroad.

Agreed, it's a balancing act.

It’s amazing how crap scouting is really. Some of the utter dross we and many other teams sign.

Come on! It's not the scouting that's responsible for poor recruitment. There are enough steps between spotting a player and signing him/her to ensure that there's a possibility they'll turn out to have potential.

After this WC there'll be a furore of transfers on the basis of world-wide tv coverage which any Tom, Dick or Harry will have access to.

These blokes will be judged on playing for their country in a special one-in-four-years competition in which they'll be performing at their best. They won't all be successful and some will be distinctly mediocre. And scouting will be completely out of the equation.

Some recruiting will take place after minnow vs monster cup games. The highlights of FA Cup games and the EFL games are available for all on Freeview.

What scouting is important in is unearthing the gems at teenage level and the list of failed teenage superstars is as long as yer arm. I saw a group picture of England select under somethings taken in the 1960s - about forty kids in all. The only one in that group who ever made it was Peter Shilton! It's a hit-and-miss pursuit at best.

Look at André Kramaric - not right for City but first pick for Croatia.

I rest my case.
