Who the **** are we going to get to replace Maddison, Tielemans and most of our defence over the course of two windows?

If we don't get it spot on in the summer we will really struggle. Last summers shit show was the final nail in the coffin with all the awful running of the club for a while. I'm not ignoring when things were going so well for us, but that shouldn't mean we just ignore how badly its been run since.

Domt you just love Foxestalk.

All the talk here last month was Barnes is in the form of his life and an outside bet for the world cup.

One game back in a game where frankly everyone was off it and its back to.

"He's a shadow of his former self"

Amazing...

It’s a shame Alves is out with that murderous challenge. I think he was fully being lined up as a bench player, not only for his own development but to help manage game time for Barnes / keep him fresh for the run in. He could have also played in the 10 position - would have been like a new signing.

I remember when Rodgers arrived here in 2019 to "work with this group of players", after we signed Tielemans after his loan period he looked genuine world class and despite his great goals every now and again is a shadow of the player who was when we signed him and doesn't run games like he used to. That team at Christmas 2019 was arguably the best in the league outside of Man City and Liverpool:

                        Vardy

Barnes  Maddison  Tielemans  Perez

                        Ndidi

Chilwell  Soyuncu  Evans  Ricardo

                     Schmeichel

Remarkably nine of that team are still here and Chilwell was great business selling him for £50m and replaced by £7m Justin who was a better player IMO. Vardy, Kaspar and Evans you would have expected them to be lesser players three years on because of age but Tielemans, Ndidi and Soyuncu should be at their peaks as mid 20's players but their levels have fallen off a cliff. Only Maddison has upped his level since then, manager's fault?

Perez was always a poor buy as that summer we needed to try to get a marquee signing RW to compliment the other 10 players in the first XI.

I don’t think we have a single player who has developed particularly well under Rodgers, except Maddison who I think would have just gotten better anyway.

Ndidi is the biggest example, followed by Soyuncu. Both of these are mere shadows of the players who signed for the club. I never thought I’d see Ndidi playing like he has been.

For a manager who ‘brings players on’, he’s sent quite a few backwards. Perez was better at Newcastle than he has been at Leicester. Daka was scoring goals for fun at his previous club.
Despite the FA cup win, I won’t look back on the Rodgers tenure with any real endearment. I think the club is in its worst state now that it’s been in for a very long time.

Ndidi’s decline has been the most surprising.

I think it probably stems from BR wanting to change him to become more progressive rather than let him specialise as a destroyer and pair him with a ball player like Tielemans in 2019/20. Youri’s standards have also slipped which won’t have helped.

In some respects wouldn't be sad to see some of them go:

Tielemans doesn't wanna be here, at his best we'll desperately miss him but his performances on a whole are patchy, it also opens up the captaincy to an actual leader and someone who (hopefully) wants to be here. The irony being he think's he's better than us yet he's arguably a factor in our failings.

I like Amartey and Mendy but they're not good enough and need improving anyway. Perez is somewhere in there too.

Evans and Bertrand are done.

Vestergaard was never going to work and the signing was quite bizarre indeed.

Maddison and Soyuncu i'll be sad to see go.

I just hope Rodgers goes with them.

This is the 3rd(?) season in a row that I just want to get finished and see the back of, all players lost need replacing - there lies a problem of which we have to get right and cannot afford to get wrong but hopefully its a reset we desperately need.

I can't take this seriously. So you are saying in effect we need a whole new squad? I'd say bring a new manager in and have a limited spend. The club doesn't have the cash. Is a Massive clear out needed? Or a change at the top.

Largely agree with your conclusion about lack of progression of the squad, but Tielemans was far from world class in his first full season (and he’s never been close to world class in general). Most people at the time were disappointed after his loan spell as he was very mediocre that season and I remember a meme circulating here in particular of how much better Tielemans looked on loan compared to when we actually signed him

If Maddison has any sense whatsoever he’ll be out of this club in a flash.

I’ll be amazed if he’s not gone by the end of the window - or that this is the real reason his little injury is taking so long to sort itself.

The problem, and it is a really big one, isn't the squad per se but the first regular starting eleven depending upon where we want to be.

For us to be a decent top half side with the potential for a decent cup run then I'd say only the following are of sufficient quality to play regularly week in week out.

Faes

Castagne

Barnes

Ndidi  (presuming he can get back some form)

There are then a few who are decent back up who can step in from game to game

Ward

KDH

Daka

Kelechi

Soumare

Praet  (unlikely to still be here?)

Then there are these players

Vardy  (I'm afraid to say looks a bit past it now and couldn't play every game)

Ricardo  ( who knows if he can ever stay fit)

JJ    (ditto)

Then there is the question of Maddison who I think will go in the summer for around 50 million unless a bid of c.70 million lands in January in which case he will be gone then. I'm assuming that all out of contract players will not be resigned though a case could be made for Amartey and possibly Evans though he seems pretty much finished too.

So to be competitive in the top half we really need 6 or 7 players who can improve the starting 11 and go straight in. Plus probably another 3 or 4 decent squad fillers.  Cost probably around 100-120 million?  So even with the Fofana money and the sale of Maddison releasing some funds we will be well short of the required amount I suspect.

Just had a look at the list of players coming up on a free this summer. Any good options jump out to anyone there?

https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/statistik/endendevertraege

Looking at English players there's nothing that jumps off the page for me but some names that might be worth a punt are Nelson (Arsenal RM, 23], Oxlade-Chamberlain (Liverpool CM, 29), Cantwell (Norwich LM, 24), Davies (Everton CM, 24) and Akpom (Boro FW, 27).

Whether you can't take that seriously or not it's more than likely how it is.

Tielemans, Soyuncu, Amartey, Mendy, Perez, Evans and Bertrand, more than likely will be leaving on a free.

Vestergaard the year after but hopefully before.

Maddison either gets sold whether that be now or the summer, signs a new contract or leaves for free next summer.

This is the position the club has put itself in.

Our days of challenging for Europe are over. Even if we weren't a club in decline, all of the sky six have gotten their act together compared to a couple of years ago and now Newcastle have emerged with their takeover as well as clubs like Villa showing more ambition. Sadly, I think we've all come to terms with us being a club in decline too. We have gone from being in a very strong position in terms of the playing squad to me now looking at thinking that we need major surgery.
