Is Dean Smith better than Rafa Benitez, Jesse Marsch and Brendan Rodgers?

What you on about?

Smith did a good job in League One with Walsall (kept them up then in the following seasons pushed on and got them to the Football League trophy final), stabled Brentford but then left for Villa and got them promoted in the same season. Never relegated from the PL with Villa.

The only job he's failed at is Norwich but he won't be the first manager there to get relegated given their budget compared to other clubs. I am not holding one poor job against him.

He wouldn't be my ideal choice but in our position now beggars can't be choosers and, for me, it's either Smith or Rafa.

Apologies for not being enthused by a manager who only success has been at League One and Championship level.

It’s a terrible appointment by an indecisive board playing it ‘safe’ by using the same old tired and trusted approach of having Shakespeare with the belief  of this being more palatable by the fans and gain a reaction by the old guard in the squad, to save face after being turned down by Jesse Marsch.

It’s a terrible appointment that is only being done on the basis of bringing the ‘safe’, clutching at straws, same old approach of having Shakespeare back with this being seen as more palatable by the fans and gain a reaction by the old guard in the squad, to save face after being turned down by Jesse Marsch.

He’s here for 8 games. We’re 19th and literally asking someone to come in and oversee an almost inevitable relegation. This is the reality of who realistically can come in.

It will be a lot easier to get a good young manager or something in in the summer

And in fairness I can just about see that logic and go with it.

Our next manager shouldn’t be on the basis on them having huge amounts of success in the biggest leagues. Jon Dahl Tomasson is a prime example of the type of manager we should be looking at. Hard working and fast paced everything we’re not and doesn’t matter that he hasn’t had success, yet.

I still don’t rate Smith but I’m not sure we have much choice.

Can't wait to read the, 'Is Kenny Jackett really better than Steve Cotterill, Shinji Okazaki, Nigel Adkins, Matthew Upson, Joe Kinnear, Vicky Vixen, Sam Allardyce, Steve Walsh, Dean Smith, Rafael Benitez, Jesse Marsch and Brendan Rodgers?' thread in a couple of years.

He’s better than Marsch and on a shorter contract. If we went down with Marsch on a 3 year deal we’d have been doomed. This way up or down we can bring the right appointment in the summer rather than being bulled into giving plan Z a bumper deal out of sheer panic and incompetence.

It wasn't that you weren't "enthused" but you laughed him off as a failure which isn't true. I don't think any of us are enthused, but we've got 8 games left and haven't got a manager. We haven't got much to choose from.

His Norwich team were favourites for promotion and he ended up being sacked with an average of 1.09 points a game in his time there.

His Aston Villa team stopped up due to goal line tech error, then proceeded to waste 100m on the Jack Grealish money on average players, including Danny Ings.

He has done nothing of note at Premier League level and his only success has come in the lower leagues.

I think I’m justified in my original thoughts, but you are right in that we probably now have no other options, for which the blame firmly lies with the board.

Norwich job granted, I already acknowledged that but that's the only time he has failed really in his management career.

Villa didn't stop up due to a goal line tech error, no team gets promoted/relegated/saved on the back of one error, a 38 game season is not decided by one game.

I wouldn't say he wasted 100m of the Grealish money either. Buendia, Bailey and Ings were the biggest signings are two of those three players still play regular for Emerey now. Ings has never been an average player, but Villa did overpay for him.

We are in a stupid position now because of the board's lack of action and either Smith or Rafa would be my choice now at this stage.

Anyone is better than Rodgers purely because he had lost the plot here. That said, SMITH is Rock bottom of the replacement pile.

As the games go on that point against Brentford looking better and better

Surprised so many think he’s worse than Marsch. All Marsch has ever done has won a 1-team league where RB Salzburg have won the league literally every single season for the past decade, then failed catastrophically everywhere else. At least Smith had half decent spells at Brentford and Villa and he got Villa promoted and stabilised them.

Smith for 8 games is a much better option than a proven failure like Marsch for 3.5 years.

What had Rodgers done before he joined us aside from winning a one team league with Celtic?

Claudio had a poor short term history before joining us, people place too much emphasis on a manager's achievements, when its more about them being a good fit for the time.

As an example I would rather have big Sam or Dyche for a relegation battle than a Poch, Rodgers or Jose.

Look at the track records and history

At EFC he was working with a pile of cack but organised them at least

At NUFC he kept them competitive despite Ashley

smith and shakey have achieved nothing tbh

no chance with our divided squad as it needs someone with proper experience to have a plan and implement it now - Rafa will do that and also take no prisoners - our squad is spoilt and been allowed to coast by BR

No better than Bruce at Newcastle. Much lower win percentage than Silva, Big Sam and now Dyche at Everton. Ancellotti had a 46% win rate immediately before Rafa took over and Rafa had a 31% win rate.

Rafa is like Rodgers he’s good at talking himself up and slagging off the board to deflect the blame from himself. It would be like having an older Rodgers
