I wouldn’t even say Brighton are ahead of the chasing pack at the moment. They’ve had an iffy season I think. They’re probably towards the top of the chasing pack, but not ahead of it imo.

Europe has caught them out, for sure.

Last season they genuinely looked good enough to be a top 4 side. This season, you just don’t know what you’re gonna get with them.

Haven't changed their model at all though, respect to then for that.

Like we should have done, they'll look to be safe mid table and then push for Europe next year with a lighter schedule. One year in, one year out.

It's what we should have done but instead we blew way too much trying to establish ourselves as European regulars without the groundwork being in place.

I kind of agree with @Happy Fox in that for all the high praise Brighton get (& especially on here) what have they done, where are they going & for how long?

There's a lot being said about their recruitment but this just seems to be a, get in quick so we can flip them, type of recruitment not so much to build a team for the longterm.
If we look beyond the stupid money they received last summer  (mostly from Caicedo) they received €195m they paid out €109m in incomings they did much the same the previous season with those incomings only staying 1 season.
Note that like us buying the Mahrez's, Kante's of the world it soon dry's up & the outlay starts to chip away at what you receive back in sales.

They currently sit 9th & i can see Chelsea over taking them shortly yet they have spent €109m there would be murders on here if lets say we had spent €109m in a single season & sat 9th & slipping.

The highest they have finished is 6th & that's the only time they have finished above us since they came back up, this was last season when we were relegated.

I see them very much like Southampton were long time ago churning out talent but not really getting anywhere or winning anything.

The only reason i mentioned Brighton is they now have a model & De Zerbi would be putting his recommendations in place for his successor not because i see them as long term top 6 chasers because we know it can't last for clubs like us, Brighton, West Ham, Brentford, Everton etc

We can’t simply assume Brighton will go the same route as past clubs.

Their approach is driven by factors that are hard to duplicate.  They shop in a different market (smaller South American countries) not already crawling with European scouts.  More importantly, they’ve been there for years, with their own personnel who have deep relationships with club directors and managers down to youth level.  i.e. the people who know exactly who the good footballers are, and in that region, have the influence to tell them where to sign.  Add in their proprietary database and analysis methods and … the results have been striking.

For sure, others are already copying Brighton’s methods, and poaching their front-office talent.  And as you note, there is the cost-control ceiling which they are approaching.  (To compete with the biggest, you MUST grow your revenues.)  But their operation appears the most sustainable smaller-club approach we’ve seen in this era.

The bit about the squad keeping together and how KDH has made it a personal mission to see this season out with us, makes me even more want this squad kept together for next season.  Dont sell KDH or any other key Enzo players please.

Top, Susan and co will have to make things work without pulling the rug.

I think KDH should be playing Premier League football.

But I don't think he's anywhere near good enough to be too big for Leicester if we go up.

For two reasons, really, firstly because he's got a fair bit of development to do if he wants to play for one of the Big Six and secondly because (and this may be arrogant and delusional perhaps) quite frankly, unless the money issues really are perilous at King Power and we are at the end of an era, I'd expect us to go back fairly promptly to challenging the top half. Maybe not immediately in the very first year back but I absolutely do think we should have ambitions to recover to where we were.

All good points, but let’s where Brighton are in 3-4 years and then judge them against what we did

I don't think it's fair or pertinent to make that comparison. If we are the yard stick then virtually all clubs will fail to get anywhere close the next 50 years.

I wouldn't be surprised if Brighton are consistently ahead of us the next 5 years though.

The 1 year in 1 year out isn’t sustainable because as soon as you get in you need to firstly reward, you need to manage the heightened profile of players and coaching staff from poachers and you need to invest to sustain the additional competition.

Once in the model changes as much as they / we would like to think it doesn’t.
