I think a lot of the reason people are so angry is because they keep getting told that what they see with their eyes is not really happening, and that they are elderly, poorly educated and low income people like that means they don't count and their concerns do not deserve to be addressed by their politicians.  As you say it is then really easy for people who appear to be listening to get their vote.  Which then the mainstream politicans use to belittle them further - often implying they are racist too - instead of actually looking at the issues.

It's the big challenge of dealing with populist parties - they can offer very simple solutions to very complicated problems. Until, of course, that populist party gets into a position of power and has to enact these simple solutions, only for the world and his wife to see they don't work and those problems really are as complicated as the mainstream parties said all along.

By the way, I am not dismissing these people or saying that their concerns are not valid or not really happening. They are, but they are being effectively brainwashed by bad faith actors who are telling them that the cause of what they are saying is other people who have been failed by detached elites instead of the detached elites themselves.

... and as an addendum to this, should the worst happen as a result of those bad faith actors having power (as it may well), then it's not only those bad faith actors who will be held responsible for all the pain and suffering that ensues.

It never is, because it's always someone else's fault when they do fail. This line only works with the most cultish of supporters, mind. Floating voters and protest voters are either put off completely or get buyer's remorse.

Certainly, but then I think that the degree of consequences that I'm referring to (viz. anywhere from very bad to utterly absolute) means whoever is left behind won't be either too discerning or too reticent about handing out blame.

The VE Day parades are impressive.

There's a lot of messaging about remembering so such horrors that were witnessed eighty years ago would never happen again, but I don't think that's the real problem - it's the people who do remember and want to repeat it because this time, they think their ideology will win.

It could have the opposite effect.

70% of most Hollywood films' box office is from overseas.

How can you apply a tariff, charge people a tax on the entry fee to watch none American produced films.

So far:

1) Richard Tice discouraging investment in Lincolnshire.

2) Andrea Jenkyns pledging to sack people who don't exist.

3) Reform councillors fighting over who gets to be Lincolnshire council leader.

4) Confusion over whether they're going to ban the county flag.

Might just turn this into its own thread. It's going well, isn't it?

They haven't even been to Lincoln yet.

Will move at speed? Surely there's a thousand more important issues to work on.

God, these cvnts really know how to squeeze votes out of the flag shaggers, don't they?

Because they don't actually have any coherent policies.

As ten counties are about to find out.

Right.

We're not in the middle of a global biodiversity extinction event and public services aren't being critically underfunded to the point of choosing lives, is it?

They’re banning the Lincolnshire flag from flying over Lincolnshire County Council?

Pretty clear by now that policies like the flags one are designed to garner a particular response on social media ("stupid flagshaggers" etc) which will be seen by those voters they are targeting and solidify their support even further. MAGAists do similar stuff.

In fairness, most of the responses I've seen on social media haven't criticised the flying of the Union Flag and St George's Cross so much as the 'no other flags' stuff that could impact upon the county flags.

Farage has now reworded it to include county flags, but these guys don't think before they speak because they simply don't have any policies or ideas that aren't vibes or co-opted from MAGA.

Somewhat scarily, they might think (and might have reason to think) that is enough to get elected in the current political climate.

I'm not sure they're right. They'll get a very loud and loyal twenty-odd percent out of it, but MAGA and Trump are so despised here that it'll just put off floating voters and undecideds.

What about the Lincolnshire flag, which you commonly see around Lincolnshire?

I know a couple of people who say they hate Trump but are Reform-curious. Many people in rural England are the kind of people who moved or would like to move to Spain and voted for Brexit. Their world view is not coherent.
