No, not necessarily at all. A rubbish appointment isn't automatically box ticking just because the bloke's black. Could very easily just be rubbish recruitment practice - universities are rife with it tbh. Loads of white blokes get appointed to jobs they shouldn't have as well.

Only in this case the rubbishly appointed professor appears to have survived years of rumblings and accusations about his lack of qualifications for the job because he was a DEI appointment, which is unfortunate.  Still good to see the university has now decided to look into it all, like they should have done before he was appointed.

The other slightly concerning thing re Jesus college Cambridge seems to be they are patting themselves on the back for achieving 38% of new undergrads being from BEM population, which is widely recognised to be only 18% of the UK population.  I guess they take in a lot of international students (and their money) but it does seem to me to be as hard to justify over 18% as under it.  Who is missing out here?

Is that 38% of home students? To be honest I find the term ethnic minority very confusing in this country anyway as it includes Brits but doesn't seem to include e.g. a Polish or German person despite the fact they are obviously a minority. And you're right that institutions now seem to try to hire or include non white UK citizens at a higher rate than in the overall population. If Cambridge's home student body was 18% BME they'd probably face criticism. All very weird.

Crazy to look back at JD Vance and Trump pressurising Zeleneskyy to sign essentially a surrender deal a couple of years ago saying Ukraine "doesn't have the cards" and how there were users on here saying Europe shouldn't be helping Ukraine because we're just wasting money on an inetivible loss given how phenomenally Ukraine keep managing to out-think and out-fight Russia. Genuinely hard to see Russia winning this war these days,

Places like that really are a devolved backwater that shouldn't still exist in the modern world. They probably all hate the "commies" still too.

Are there any other nations in the "developed" world that have so many places within them so beset by poverty, fundamentalism and deterioration?

That shameful meeting in the White House was the nadir of that. The Ukrainians have done incredibly well to stick to their guns both diplomatically and in the field and while they may well not get everything they want from a future negotiation as a result, I'm pretty sure the outcome of any such negotiation won't be a "loss" for them.

With historical and outdated Christian views.

I see shades of it from my growing up in a CofE children's home for Waifs and Strays having to go to church 3 times on Sundays but being totally side-lined, ignored and absolutely not allowed to go near any of the other church goers.

Train crash in Sussex near Eastbourne.

Looks horrific (laying on the side of a seemingly steep embankment).

Luckily, there are no reported serious injuries.

The tracks look completely buckled in the distance, not much guessing as to what’s caused it.

Leavitt has left it.

Amazing how your boss leaving you as a human shield for a potential Iranian attack can sour a relationship.

There was somewhere in ne London in July 2022 when we had that 40c record day and the wind was strong

took about 3 houses I think but that was more to do with the wind whereas now it’s the tinder box vegetation

Apparently it’s a TicTok challenge….

Unless there is actually a definitive, demonstrable and provable rise in arson cases, then the circumstances of the starting of these wildfires is much less important than the circumstances of their extent and severity anyway.
