Interesting brief discussion about Martin on the Guardian Football Weekly pod today. Gist of it was all the journos on the panel think he’s a bit of a fraud who throws his players under a bus on a regular basis.

I actually think the similarities between Rangers and Leicester are huge. It was exactly the reason we shouldnt have appointed him

To be fair, it has been entirely relevant last season, and the season before.....

Very valid point. 
rangers are a fantastic club, but very hard to manage. My main worry for Martin is his style or play and he does not change, at all. 
maybe I watch the league win too often. But how many goals were scored with under 5 passes. Nearly all! Martins football is too passive for this and really limits the number of attacks, shots on goal the team will create. 
 

At Rangers, he was hated. Such a tough situation. But surely you adapt and learn from mistakes. In friendly games and start of our season. Shows he has not changed. That’s my main worry. 
How many clear chances do his teams create each game, and counter with the opposition. One Burton player had 5 decent shots against us. At home! The style and refusal to adapt worries me. 
hopefully I am completely wrong and Russell Martin succeeds.

Russell, 17 games at Rangers, 5 wins with a win ratio of 29%. Danny Rohl took over the same team, won 22 from 40, win ratio 55%. Infact when you look at his entire career, his win ratio is 38%. Botton line he's a terrible manager and we'll be lucky to scrape into the play offs.

Reading the following passage from a report on the Ipswich game and around the goals, namely the 3rd and Page’s mistake made me think of the bits overlooked by his haters & the importance of what he’s like with the players, not our perception of him.

I made a comment the other day suggesting that whilst he gets dogs abuse from fans about his style and this perceived ‘it’s all about me’ persona, I bet the players love his management style, they want to have the ball, they want to take risks & they want to be coached.

I know the reply’s will be flooded with just wait until he’s under pressure and starts calling out the players but let’s wait until we see what’s said and why, we have a thread on virtually every player after a game mostly slating & then you come into this thread and slate him for not calling the players out 🤷‍♂️ 

Anyway as it’s about Louis and the fact most fans would rather he stayed with us have a read and then put yourself in Louis’s shows and think how it made him feel.

 

”Playing as the progressive defensive midfielder in City's system also carries risk. For Marcelino Nunez's second goal from the halfway line, Page turned in the middle of Leicester's half under pressure and drove into space, before making the wrong decision and giving the ball away.

"The last one, Louis' turn was so good in the first action, then he's a bit tired," Martin said when discussing Ipswich's three goals. "He was so disappointed, I said to him, 'mate, when you play like that, I will accept, when the intention is good and a mistake every now and again."

 

We as fans just see a mistake and start to blame, during the game after it happened people were defending Page and slating Martins style for the error or the keeper but it was Page’s error simple as but Martin will continue to encourage him to do it again.

The xg of us conceding if he loses possession was much much higher than our xg if he keeps it...

Would / does the xG computer mark it that way, the ball is on the halfway line does it make preference to 1 side over the other when player and ball are stood on the same spot when either player has the ball?

You would assume given 1 has the ball it’s 0.01 more to the side with possession ergo the 2 second before it’s taken from Page our teams xG would be 0.01 higher from the halfway line then it’s taken that would flick to 0.01 to opposition or does it read its Leicester therefore It’ll make it 0.08?

hopefully I am completely wrong and Russell Martin succeeds. 

Really I understand the complaints about our play but I need fans of this club to understand that we can only go quickly back to front when the opponents aren't packing 11 men in their own half,you saw against Ipswich when they actually came at us we went at them quickly and with pace, alot of teams in this league are going to sit back and just soak up pressure to hit us on the counter, we do need to get better at creating chances however, I think that will come when the attack gels because our preferred front five have played less than 5 games together.

Martin always backed his players at Southampton when they conceded goals from mistakes if they implementing his style.

 

In his pressers he tended to focus more on players playing long than on individual mistakes.
