The massive postive is he continues to play Josepth, Alves, Braybrook and Page

Riis seems like a good aditpion also, few tweaks I think he could get  us up

I think we'll get promoted, but it won't be thanks to him.

99% of this forum could pick a team and tactics that would get this team promoted.

Very much like his Southampton promotion. It wasn't down to him, it was down to Southampton having the best set of players.

Similar to us under Enzo, I still stick by my opinion that any of the other 23 managers could have got that team promoted.

Im not so sure. We saw what many of them offered up last season. You have to keep them motivated and engaged still. But true they were head and shoulders above that year.

We have the basis of a good team.

He just needs to value his job and stop playing players with reputations, his mates and those he believes to be wonderful human beings.

I think at this point I think the fans would agree on 8 / 9 players that should be playing each week but he persists with 2 / 3 who are having and continue to have absolute howlers

Out of interest, what 2/3 do you think they are?

Thomas and Souttar for me have been dreadful.

I'd add in McCarthy too for me - An absolute bomb scare and a strange thing to say for a keeper but he's lost his legs - no spring and no movement.

McCarthy is the only keeper we have that can play this level. Our no 1 is injured.

Souttar was the great hope of this forum, now he’s useless. We all know Thomas limitations.

The issue with our back line is with how they are asked to play. Souttar has been caught for pace several times because he is not playing to his strengths. I don’t think this is Russel picking his mate. I think this is a trade off between experience and skillset. Thomas too is being asked to do quite a lot. He looked better under Rowatt when defending was his priority. The defence is pushing up high and playing constantly out the back. It’s physically and mentally exhausting (even to watch).

As we’ve seen with McFarlan, what they get asked to do catches up with them pretty quickly. Any defensive team we put out will struggle one at or another.

Cut a long story short, I don’t believe the issue is Russell playing his mates at all.

He didn't even manage that though did he.

Towards the end of the season, we started to really tail off and there were reliable reports that the players had a meeting, without Enzo, a result of which the form picked up again.

I'm not so sure it is yet. We've created very little so far and faced far more chances against us, we need significant improvement but i'm more confident if he continues to have belief in the young players with some reliable experience like O'Hora, Lundstram, Riis etc that this should hopefully improve. It needs to do to start seeing consistent results, until then it'll be hard work.

Longer term I have minimal faith we'll be solid at the back as he's not once in any season as a manager managed to do this. His teams are usually in the bottom quarter of the league for goals conceded regardless of how well or poor they do results and league standings wise. Even when he got Southampton up they conceded over 60 goals, staggering.

On the eye test, it does seem we create more going forward versus the aforementioned managers, we had over 20 shots I think versus MK, maybe the XG is skewed due to the likes of BDCR wasting so many chances.

On another day if we had Riis in front of goal we would have probably got 3 points v MK and Notts County. Time will tell I guess

but it’s irrelevant unless defence is sorted out

Think Southampton and Leeds had 'better' squads than us on 'paper' that year.

So, Cifuentes or Rowett would have won the league with Maresca's team?

He's continually played 4/5 youth players this year and that's been more positive vs previous managers.

Just get us back in the championship and stabilise us. Not even bothered about getting back into the Prem anytime soon.

Keep trusting the youngsters (which he’s done more than any other manager recently) I’ll never enjoy his style of play so will simply have to suck it up.

Reminder that Enzo Maresca was hand picked by Pep Guardiola to replace him.

He also matched the record for most wins of Manager of the Month in a single season in that year he took us up.

Also the lowest position, playing teams when there is a clear gulf in class normally results in “attacking football”

Like when managers you mentioned above

RVN stuck 6 past QPR

Or Cooper stuck 4-0 past Tranmere

Even Marti beating Plymouth 3-1

When did the absolute clown head Marti beat Plymouth 3-1? He is by far worse than Martin by a country mile, only ever in a job because his name was Cifuentes.

there were some truly horrific performances under Cifuentes which showed where we were heading, even the games we won bar maybe (Derby and Ipswich games) we didn't deserve to win.

away,

Games which stood out, Oxford away, Wrexham at home, Portsmouth, Southampton away, Sheffield United at home (When the clown should have been sacked), QPR Away, Watford Home, Sheffield United away, Finally Oxford home where he was put out of his misery belatedly.

And he also went on a run of 10 points from 10 games with those players; relegation form.

He was also responsible for giving Vestergaard a 3 year deal and rewarding Hamza's drink driving with the captain's armband the next game.

He ultimately did a good job, but it was an incredibly easy job, not without some very bad moments/decisions.

Until we have a settled back line, the results will be inconsistent.  Apart from the GK situation, which is a major flaw, he's not exactly had a great set of players to pick from pre transfer window across the back line.

Let his signings start regularly at the back, give it some time, and see what happens.

He deserves time.  The owners on the other hand do not.

In an attacking sense, there's little to worry about until someone attempts to poach Page.

Nelson injury has really disrupted our prep for this season; I'm confident Souttar would have been moved on and Nelson would have been CB/captain.

Cullen, Burns and McCarthy - These 3 and McCarthy have been chronic

They do feel like jobs for the boys - One last pay day when they should retire

Can hardly call him responsible for giving Vestergaard a 3 year deal given he wasn't our manager at the time lol

All he's responsible for with regards to Vestergaard was that he made him look like a very competent centre back. Something no other Leicester manager managed to do.

I don't think he can be blamed for the bad culture in terms of leadership here either. There's clearly a very poor structure in terms of captaincy here and that stems from the top IMO. Ultimately he was paid to win games for us. If he thought that Hamza being captain meant that was more likely then who are we to judge. The team he manages has just spent £120m on a racist. Does it make him morally right? Probably not. Does it make him a bad manager? Probably not.

I seriously disagree that managing Leicester City is an easy job. Every manager since Rogers has proven that it clearly isn't.

Yeah, please don't take it as a dig at Enzo, I think he's a good manager, and a likeable person.

I just think that any of the other managers could have achieved the same with the squad we had.

But yeah, back to Martin...hes useless.

63 in total. 9 of which were against us. 5 at home, 4 away. But that’s still 54 in their other 44 games. In fact just checking Southampton's  results from that season they conceded 16 in the first 6. 4 twice and 5 away at Sunderland. He’s not a defensive minded coach in any way and I suspect all the work on the training ground is about how you set up with the ball

it’s getting done on the transition that is Martin’s absolute Achilles heel. Yes we’ll probably concede a few brain fart goals playing out from the back this season, but he’s always going to gloss over that as risk reward. But we seem so susceptible when the ball gets turned over, there’s gaps all over the pitch because of the high 8 positions. Any team with a modicum of sense will set up exactly how Oxford did, wait for us to make a mistake and hit us on the transition. And we’ll never learn

Not sure whether he actually tweaked anything or whether everything was just working so well but the defensive record over that 25 game unbeaten run in that season was very good

25 games

56 goals scored

17 goals conceded

11 clean sheets

None of that will translate because Southampton didn't have war criminal Luke Thomas starting for them

Agree that it will be the team that gets us up not Brussel, but Enzo is four times the manager Brussel could even hope to be.

I seriously disagree that managing Leicester City is an easy job. Every manager since Rogers has proven that it clearly isn't.

Successive managers have come into the club in recent years and responded with shock and horror at the culture they've found. I think sometimes people look at our squad and assume that we only need a halfway competent manager to set the tactics and pick the team and we'll be fine. I think they underestimate just how bad the culture at Seagrave has been and how difficult it is turn that around when some of the bad apples are still in the building. Enzo did it but he's an elite manager, and we aren't often going to be able to attract one of those. There have been reports that the mood has improved significantly since RM came in, and the 'culture' side of things may actually be one of his strengths. If he could just work on his tactics and his defensive coaching abilities we might be in business...

Yeh, agree with both points.

I honestly wasn't slagging Enzo off, I do rate him as a manager.

I was just making the point that I didnt think we got promoted because of Enzo, we got promoted because we had the best team in the league.

It will be the same with Martin this season if we go up.

The difference lies that if we do get promoted, and we don't have the advantage of having the best team in the league,  Martin will be found out like he was at Southampton.

Put Enzo in that position,  and i think he'll show his managerial worth.

100% agree with the sentiment above. Russell would have hated losing the possession battle but winning the game, does no favors for his philosophy.

The style he imposes doesn't help us win matches, constantly trying to overplay and walk it in. Riis said f**k that, 'av it!
