We can‘t field only 19- or 20-year olds.

The trick is in the mix.

Wish the guy well here.

We‘re a bit of an unknown now, with so many new players or younger players thrown into the limelight.

I‘m cautiously optimistic.

The reality is that we won't play the young players.

It will be the same as last year with Chaplin instead of Jordan James, Cullen instead of Ayew, Braybrooke instead of Winks, Alves instead of Fatawu, Aluko instead of Ricardo and Adebayo instead of Daka.

The rest of the squad will still be built up by Skipp, Okoli, Faes, Thomas, Choudhury, Nelson, Mavididi, BDCR, Coulibaly, Okoli.

Same old same old really, no room for Hutchinson, Evans, Otchere, Carr, Joseph, Neale, Gray to have a breakthrough season here. At a push Page might pick up his first season over 1000 minutes considering we haven't yet replaced Aaron Ramsey/Mukasa. If we sign one more midfielder or forward on top of Adebayo then expect Page to get 500 minutes over the season and sent back to the u21s again.

Quite a statement, that.

Just off the top of my head: Gullit, Rijkaard, Beckenbauerr, Philip Lahm, James Milner, David Alaba, Camavinga, Javier Zanetti, Kimmich, Fernando Llorente, Ashley Young, Emre Can, Geremi, Luiz Fernandez...

And the best of them all - Sir Jeffrey Schlupp.

You are compare a journey man championship player with some of the elite players in the world, wow......

I don't get this doom and gloom and/or logic.

The season hasn't really started yet and people are already expecting the worst.

Have a little faith. It's a 46-game season, ten games into it should give us a better picture.

Chaplin is 29, Cullen 27, Adebayo 28. Braybrooke is 22, Alves 21, Aluko not even 20 yet FFS.

As for the other players from last season (btw, you mentioned Okoli twice), I do expect some more to leave (permanently and/or on loan).

Plenty of room for youngsters in this squad to prosper. And they don't come with the (same) high (and false) expectations of seasons past.

Difference is, Cullen doesn‘t cost £20m in transfer fees.

If its a 1m that like 20m to us now.

We still have plenty if older players Thomas, Hamza, Skipp, Chaplin, Mavididi, MaCathy, Faes and BCDR.

Let hope he works out.

If "old" means "experienced" to you, then yes, we do have some more "older" players.

Thomas is 25, Choudhoury 28, Skipp 25, Mavididi 27, Faes 28.

That is not old, but most footballers' best years ahead.

Plus, Faes and Mavididi should be shipped sooner than later. They've either burnt their bridges or shown they don't care about the club.

And Faes and Mavididi are definitely overpaid/on massive wages, wages we can't afford in the third tier.

BDCR might be worth a punt in League One (provided he stays fit).

McCarthy's age is less relevant to me, as he is a goalkeeper.

What part of the logic is incorrect.

We simply do not have room in the 18 man match day squad to play academy players.

                 Cullen

Mavididi Chaplin Alves

           Skipp Braybrooke

Thomas Nelson Okoli Aluko

               McCarthy

Bench:

Stolarczyk

Choudhury

Faes

Mcfarlane

BDCR

Adebayo

I don't consider the likes of Alves and Braybrooke as academy talent really as their involvement in the first team is long overdue and they are both clearly our best players.

No room on the bench for the likes of Evans, Hutchinson, Otchere, Carr, Joseph in a season when we are in league one is actually shocking. Our squad is beyond bloated.

People were worried we were going to have to play the academy this season as well.

I just think for the likely amount it’ll cost (around £2m?) Davis Keillor-Dunn is just such a better profile and so much more prolific at this level.

I do understand that RM will see Cullen as someone he can trust and knows fully what to expect from him, it’s just not very aspiring is it.

Senior citizen lineup, we are doomed!

Evening Foxes. A Swansea perspective.

Firstly, Russy absolutely adores Cullen. Worships the ground he walks on. We had Morgan Whittaker at the club at the same time at one point and Martin unfailingly selected LC. One way or another, you're probably going to see a lot of him whilst Martin is in charge.

The bad? (And bear in mind that this is based on watching him in The Championship) He's got no pace. Can't beat a man. His physical presence is basically zero. He can go whole periods, whole games, whole months whilst being almost totally anonymous on the pitch. I'd compare it to playing with ten men, but at least with ten men you know you're a man down and can prepare for it. Harder when you're supposed to have eleven.

But, and it's a big but...

I can't deny that the lad has a knack for scoring important goals. Even during the anonymous periods that I mentioned above you could never rule out him appearing out of nowhere on the end of a move, to smack home a rebound, or boot one in from further out that put us in front or nicked a draw. It's one of the main reasons why a lot of our supporters never lost faith in him despite the mountain of evidence to the contrary, and why I can honestly say that I wouldn't be surprised if he gets you 15+ goals this season in L1. I wouldn't expect it to happen, but it might.

This sounds very Bob Reid. Meh.

I understand your concerns but I think you’re missing the bigger picture. We could be on track to play 60 competitive fixtures this year and some of the players you’ve mentioned missing out of the 18 man squad are the next choice in their positions.

A lot depends on Martin of course but I can still see those players getting a lot of game time over the course of the season, especially considering for a few it’ll be their first real season of first team football.

So you want academy talents in the squad, but don’t class two of our academy talents as academy talents.
