Anyone reading Red or Dead by David Peace? All about Bill Shankly's time at Liverpool. Very similar in style to The Damned United, but a lot more upbeat in my opinion. You'll either love it or hate it, the writing style is very repetitive and unusual. Anyone who's read The Damned United will know what I mean.

There's a good bit in there about the 1963 FA Cup Semi Final, where we beat Liverpool 1-0 courtesy of a Mike Stringfellow goal. Shankly always said that the only team to be worried about in the top flight were Leicester and he based a lot of his methods and tactics on what Matt Gillies was doing at the time. There's a great bit in the book the night before the semi final where Shanks sits up in his dining room, laying out knives, forks and spoons on the dining table to represent the Leicester City side of that day and ends up sitting there all night feeling sick. He was right to feel some apprehension, that side was formidable.

I seriously wish I was around for the 60's and 70's. The golden era of football, whereas now we've just got a load of overpaid arseholes, no loyalty, no characters... just a load of money-grubbing wankers at every single level from the boardroom, where all the owners are concerned about is money, right down to the academy, where all the young kids are concerned about is their first contract, rather than playing for the club they love.

Bought a book Tuesday. Anthem for a Doomed Youth. A collection of first World War poetry.

It also has photos and the biographies of the poets. Some of the pictures are not pleasant.

The monk who sold his Ferrari, utter dross and poorly written, spend half my time stumbling over poorly constructed sentences. My girlfriend wanted me to read it, but I'm really struggling to read it.

A very interesting author.

Political and metaphysical ideas. I love the Plato theories and his paranoid schizophrenic writing is psychedelic.

Listen to a bit of Hawkwind, Cream, Floyd or Fairport convention whilst reading. It enhances the ambience.

You should. Anyone who can actually manage to read this "trilogy" will get a thought provoking experience. It's hard to believe that he's responsible for so many mass_market movies and one of the greatest movies of all time when you get into his "unusual" life understanding.

Reading Pratchett's 'Sourcery' at the minute. Every time Rincewind is in action I see Ken in that hat now. It's added an extra dimension to the experience.

Reading this at the moment. Got about 170 pages left. Really good. Soon to be a movie by Ben Affleck as well apparently.

I love Dennis Lehane novels, so I'll definitely check this out.

Darkly Dreaming Dexter. Quite a few differences in the Dexter character from the TV series. Worth a read IMO

Anyone read any of Linwood Barclay's books? I read one a while back and remember living it but not sure if it was because I was a bit younger or not. Mum has lent me 'Trust Your Eyes'.

being as I enjoyed Edinburgh so much this year I hit the Rebus novels. Just finishing the most recent now (didn't have the first 5). Enjoyed the series as a bit of light reading there were 4 or 5 really good books around the 13 area though the last few seemed to have lost a little - probably due to an alter of focus from Rebus to Siobhan and Rebus.

Good travelling type books.

Reading "Wolf Hall" by Hilary Mantel. Novel about Thomas Cromwell and his role within the court of Henry VIII. Is very good and looking forward to reading the second part "Bring Up The Bodies" . Both books won the Man Booker Prize - if you like history then strongly recommend.

Just finished the first 2 Walking Dead books, Rise Of The Governor and Road To Woodbury. Both excellent reads. Action packed and you really get into the characters.

Now onto this

Should tide me over nicely on the flights to and from California next week.
