Thracian Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 http://www.talkingballs.co.uk/showthread.php?t=19842 I think the Optimistic Bus has diverted to Talkings Balls for a few extra passengers. Over 41% not only think we're heading for the top six but are convinced that we'll be champions. No pressure then, Martin! Don't mistake me. MA could probably led a team of nudists safely across the North Pole. Tales about him swimming a freezing river for a bet are now being changed to say he walked across! But champions? It's possible. The more I think about it I have to agree it's possible. But whether he can do it without losing a game is the question. Come on you Blues...
Manwell Pablo Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 We wont win this league I can gurantee that for you all now.
mancunianfox Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 We wont win this league I can gurantee that for you all now. Agreed. I think thats far fetched considering how much ground we have to make up from last season.
filbertway Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 Allens not gona last past christmas at this rate, peoples expectations are way too high.

Jon the Hat Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 Agreed. I think thats far fetched considering how much ground we have to make up from last season. Forget last season, comparisons are meaningless. Two things are key 1) Whether MA can get them playing as a team quick enough. I was a doubter, but he seems to be working wonders in the teambuilding front. 2) Whether the players we have brought in are up to the job.

There's no reason why we won't do well and win the league. Don't really see relegated clubs as being up to it.
Head Honcho Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 We wont win this league I can gurantee that for you all now. I feel the same. Although we've probably improved I can't see us improving by 36 points or to put it this way 12 of our defeats last season would have had to have been victories. I can see a 21 point improvement which would have got us a play-off place but even that is going to be tough. More than a few teams are going to have to get a lot worse for us to win this league!
Milky Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 We've no chance of winning the league with the current squad. If we make the 3 or 4 more signings we've been talking about, and if they're decent, it will naturally improve our chances. I still think we're looking at top half, with an outside chance of playoffs.
Manwell Pablo Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 Agreed. There's no reason why we won't do well and win the league. Don't really see relegated clubs as being up to it. There are plenty of reasons why we wont win the league, the main one being there are 3 or 4 teams that are MUCH better than us. Lets face it the play offs are the goal and with this team needing time to gel thats ambitious.

I wouldn't rule out us winning the league but I do think that it would be a realistic aim. I'd be happy with 8th this season.
Joe. Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 With the season we've just had, playoffs would be amazing next year. I agree with Manwell, I don't think we have a chance of winning the league. I know a lot has changed, and that will obviously improve our league position next season. Playoffs would be fantastic, but I can't see anything higher than a 10th place finish next year.

When they went up they didn't have to add many players to achieve a top half finish Reading were probabley the best team in this league since the Man City team that won it.

Of course you can think of reasons we won't win the League but like MA I don't want to think about them - I don't want to worry about the opposition at all. Will any of those reasons be stronger than Spurs, of Charlton when we played them in the Cup, or Bolton, Fulham, Aston Villa who we so nearly matched with a team that wouldn't have shone on Viccy Park. To me there's just one reason our real target has to be the top two...but it's a compelling one. Martin Allen is many good things but he's never been a winner in the play offs.
STUHILL Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 We ain't guna win the league but we will be around the top 6 i'm sure! As long as some of the new signings show their worth like Clemence, Dj and Kaebi then we will be a solid team and hopefully be winning most weeks!!! Ooooh excitment is building...

Agreed but I never thought they ever stood out. They were just very well organised and efficient.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 I don't think it's a case of how much we can improve on last year. This season is a new slate with new expectations. To say we've brought in x many players, therefore we will finish with x many points more than last season is difficult. I prefer to look at it in the sense that we couldn't have a more competitive and demanding manager or chairman. They are both desperate to win every single game, a feeling that should be mandatory at every football club but that I haven't ever felt has been conveyed at LCFC from both manager and chairman at the same time so strongly as this before. The pressure on the chairman, the manager and the players is huge because they are not just getting it from the fans this season but themselves as well. There are four or five better teams than us in this division but with Allen and Mandaric here, you get the feeling that we won't be rolling over in more than one or two games this season, whatever the quality of the opposition and in this division, that's the most important thing of all.

Is there a 'level headed' coach!!! All this talking about winning the champoinship is nonsense, we haven't kicked a ball yet for real. We are still weak in some areas and some of the new additions are unknowns at this level!! Yes things look promising and we are definitely stronger, a top half finish is more realistic!!!

We are still weak in some areas and some of the new additions are unknowns at this level!! Yes things look promising and we are definitely stronger, a top half finish is more realistic!!! Totally agree. I think with the changes that have been implemented, I believe it will take time for the team to form and gel into becoming anything near potential champions. I’d be absolutely amazed if we even manage to snatch a play off place, but to think we’re going to win this league is nonsense. Whatever happens I just think it will be nice to have a team that is competitive with a desire to win while playing the standard of football which should be expected from them
Simon Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 For once I can see us being competitive, and that is saying something from this time last year. I didn't think we'd struggle as much as we did, but dear me, did anyone think at this time last season that we'd actually be chasing promotion? Not with the players we bought in. This season I expect us to be up there challenging- not necessarily for automatic as I think there are a few better teams in the league than us, but certainly to be in and about the play-offs. I've begun to look at it like this. Milan expects us to be top 6 this season- anything less will be classed as failure. Why should we settle for anything less? If the chairman of the football club I support expects it, then I do to. I could say I would be fairly happy with top half or top ten, as some other posters are saying, but if that happened it wouldn't keep MA in the job. Let's be frank, if MA doesn't make the play-offs or come mighty damn close then he'll be out on his ear.
Daggers Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 Over 41% not only think we're heading for the top six but are convinced that we'll be champions. The rank stupidity of people never fails to amaze me on an ongoing basis. I need to think of something to sell to stupid people. I need to pack my morals in a box and send it to a jungle somewhere and then rip off stupid people. They're asking for it...especially if you asked them.
