Manwell Pablo Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 It's all right Harry's now finished... for now (and it was printed on sustainable paper!!) And you're within your rights to start a "Harry Potters 59th book, do we actually care" thread and you'd get a difference of opinion in it too! I think they're called discussions!!I don't like Arsenal, not cause of the non-development of British Sport, I don't like them because they are a British team with no British players and their attitude in general. The thing I don't care about is the development of top class sport. Like the new Tennis HQ that cost £40Million, sure they may do normal sessions when the TV cameras are there, but I'd prefer tham to build 40 £1million centres across the country to benefit all. But as this is private money it's not up to me! But when a running club want's tax money to help elite runners win Golds at the Olympics I don't care about their plight!! No I'm not! and no it's not! Live and let live, just because I don't like it doesn't mean others don't and my views would be selfish and strange. I think that bit says it all without me having to reply tbh Phube!
Raj Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 I would sooner any big event, being sporting or not, be closer to home than somewhere else, however whether we as a country will reap the benefits of it is questionable. Obviously London will get the majority of £££,as well as revenue from visitors and the added effects of that (ie Hotels etc...) We in Leicester will probably get f@ck all. Maybe Loughboro' may get abit from the athletics academy? If it helps create a feel good factor,Like the Euro 96(think it was 96) then thats all good surely. If it motivates kids to participate in sports(as most are fatties who just play video games) thats also a great positive. An added benefit(to Londoners anyway!) will be the infrastructure which will be left behind, like the stadiums, better transport facilities(Hopefully!) However will they utilised to the best of the facilities???...(The Dome was the biggest waste of money ever) Another positive reason will be that we don't have to wake up at 3.30am to watch the 100m Mens Final Overall, if it runs near enough to budget,it should be a positive for the country and not a negative

We've all got a right to an opinion and a right to express it! What would be wrong would be me (or you) come on here and express an opinion and not even listen to anyone else's or ridicule what they have to say! I always listen (if rarely change my mind), whoever said this, I agree: "I don't like what you are saying, but I'll fight for your right to say it." Each to their own! You like sport, I can take it or leave it (except LCFC obviously!).

In Daggersland, Daggers seems to have a policy whereby if a discussion / opinion is considered an argument and you don't agree with it or disagrees with you, he either gets abusive or puts you on ignore. And I have had both! At least Manwell hasn't been abusive.
Blue Bob Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 Cant say I am bothered about this. I love most sport but get p*ssed off with the olympics as we are crap at it. You know now: 1. the USA will get the most medals 2. There will be a drugs scandal 3. two members of the ethiopian long distance runners will be arrested for spit roasting a russian shot putter 4. The building work will not be on time. 5. It will go over budget and tax payer will have to fund the difference. 6. London underground will call a tube strike for the first week of the games 7. The lord mayor of London will double congestion charges - because he can. 8. We will get 2 golds, 5 silvers and 4 Bronze. As I have said I cant be bothered with it!!

lookwhaticando Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 Not particularly. It's nice for us to host a showcase event such as the Olympics... but you can bet your last Rolo it'll be a logistical nightmare when the day comes. I envisage a passenger crunch at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports. I imagine the tube will be running at 190% capacity for the entire event. I'm also seeing visions of facilities that aren't entirely ready being used. But still... the prestige that comes with it all is always nice. With some luck the economy will be boosted by the games, too... even if the government tax coffers are hit.
Lineker's Left Foot Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 If this opportunity was given to another country, everybody else would rejoice that they were given such a prestigious event, but no in England, we have to moan about it, because of the money !!!
Jay Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 I hate the Olympics it's the most mediocre event going filled with insanely boring sports that nobody gives a monkeys about at any other time
Blue Bob Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 Let's just hope nobody gets hit by a javelin. I think they should throw javelin at runners, make the games more interesting and it would speed up the runners. In fact scrap the games in its present format and bring back Gladiators.
Raj Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 I hate the Olympics it's the most mediocre event going filled with insanely boring sports that nobody gives a monkeys about at any other time Considering every country on the planet wants to host it and it brings in millions in revenue(okay it costs billions to host!!) you cant call it mediocre can you? And there is nothing wrong in the womens discus event.....enthralling competition
Milky Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 People against it are obviously shit at sport, and are still bitter about all the well respecting sporstman upstaging them at school. Time to get over it.
Jay Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 Considering every country on the planet wants to host it and it brings in millions in revenue(okay it costs billions to host!!) you cant call it mediocre can you?And there is nothing wrong in the womens discus event.....enthralling competition maybe I should have used full of mediocre events but doesn't mediocre mean the following moderate quality neither good or bad rather poor Shooting, Handball, Softball, diving, Synchronized swimming, Water Polo, Equestrian, FENCING!!!, Weightlifting all fall easily into that mediocre bracket if you ask me!!
Geo V Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 Same is true for Barcelona!! But should it take the Olympics to actually make places fit to live!!?? No it shouldn't but the fact is the government would rather plough money into illegal wars and fill the place up with immigrants that don't give two tosses about the country and pay there housing and give them an allowance for food and electrical goods! I'm not too sure of you got the news up there as I'm pretty sure this was on the local London news but some college down here is going to run classes for Polish people so they can continue their Polish schooling whilst living here! So the plan is we get people in, give them housing and plenty of benefits whilst the old granddads and grandma`s drown in their own piss penniless , then school them in their mother tongue whilst they keep sending money back home! FAN DABI DOZI!!
DB11 Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 It's not the "the best thing to happen to Britain in years" but I still care and think it's a good event.
Webbo Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 I don't buy this 'it helps to regenerate run down London' crap. The price of property in London means it was bound to be redeveloped eventually. In fact you could argue that the land that the stadiums are building on would be better off used for housing.
James. Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 I don't buy this 'it helps to regenerate run down London' crap. The price of property in London means it was bound to be redeveloped eventually. In fact you could argue that the land that the stadiums are building on would be better off used for housing. It may have been redeveloped eventually. But eventually is the key word. Now we have a deadline and a formal, structured plan for regeneration. Your second point I can see where you're coming from. However it just wouldn't happen without the catalyst of an Olympics Games to prompt all the investment. In any case much of the development will be housing for the athletes which will in turn become housing for resident after the Games have finished. Furthermore this country is, to not put too fine a point on it, f**king shit at providing decent facilities for sports. With the Olympics we get world class facilities which hopefully provide a base from which sport of all kinds can develop in this country. Much of the benefits of hosting an Olympics occur after the actual fortnight is over.
Lovejoy Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 As a top hooligan once said "It's no fun trashing your own country". Not that i'm a hooligan mind.
Blue Bob Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 OK, I have been thinking about this thread and I have decided that I will go to London to watch the Swedish womens volleyball team - should be a good crack!!!
Nationwider Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 OK, I have been thinking about this thread and I have decided that I will go to London to watch the Swedish womens volleyball team - should be a good crack!!! I'd imagine there'll be several good cracks.
Asha Posted 8 August 2007 Posted 8 August 2007 In a word; 'no'. I'll probably forget its happening and its hardly worth all the hype.
