smoking age to 18

Right, I'm sure some of you have heard the smoking age is going up to 18 on the 1st of october. Considering how close this law change is i don't feel we've been told much about it.

As a 17 year old, am I legally allowed to smoke? from what i've read it sounds like I'm just not allowed to buy anything, nothing about actually smoking it.

I still have a shit load of baccy left from when I went to spain, don't want it going to waste, not that I wont have it I just don't want to be like a little kid having to smoke in the park so the police don't 'catch' me.

But if you want some 'sensible advice'... It just means you cant BUY it under the age of 18. Get someone else to thats 18+ if your really that desperate. Because the drinking age is 18, has that stopped you drinking? Doubtful. Bearing in mind you can barely smoke anywhere thesedays (thankfully) I think the park may be your only option mate. Good Luck!

If you can get away with drinking underage in a pub you should be able to use the fag machine. All shopkeepers will not ask for ID. I think the law will only really affect the very young smokers. Before a 13 yr old could look 16. They won't be able to get away with it so much which means that there will be fewer 17 year olds smoking in 4-5 years time. This can only be good for the future generations.

They should stop it all together.

It kills people and does no good at all and they still sell it ?

Its like letting a killer do what he wants and turning a blind eye too it.

Someone needs to get the balls to start an outright ban for it.

I see where you're coming from but there are lots of activities that can kill you. I know somebody who caught lead poisoning and died while having sex. If only his lovers husband hadn't entered the bedroom............

I disagree.

I'm thankful for smokers. Although I find it to be a distasteful habit, smokers bless the government tax coffers with billions of quids. Just think what else you'd have to tax to cover the deficit. As if taxation on petrol and alcohol - two other dangerous/damaging and taxable substances - weren't high enough already.

People should be allowed to smoke if they want... they just shouldn't be able to force their habit upon others by smoking in enclosed spaces with non-smokers (hence the ban in pubs, etc).

:D

People will just buy it illegally from poeple who have bought it in from abroad etc. and the government would never do it anyway, they'd lose milions in tax.

I've never smoked, but I really do hate "non-smokers" more than anyone with a fag. Seriously, grow up.

Good call. Not sure why people hate smokers so much these days. Cant even smoke in public now!

It's brilliant coming home from a night out and my clothes still smelling of comfort, and maybe a bit of minge

I'm neither under 18 or a smoker but I didn't know this was happening! Probably in reality will mean you'll have to look 12 instead of 10 to get served!

If you banned everything that *could* kill you, I think you'd find the shops very empty.

People can make their own choices. That's what the smoking ban is about, giving non-smokers the right not to breathe others' smoke.

Is everybody else on here stupid? Or am I just really intelligent?

Not true!

It isn't actually illegal for under 18's to drink alcohol.

It's illegal to sell alcohol to under 18's and it's illegal for them to buy it, but it's not illegal for them to drink it

indeed we actually have the lowest drinking age in Europe if not the world, I think you can drink in your own home from the age of 5 or something stupid.

Yup 5+ in the home, less if it's medicinal!! (i.e. gripe water)

Alcohol limits (I believe, so don't quote me):

<5 - for medicinal purposes

5 - In the home with adults present.

14 - in a pub with a meal

16 - Buy a drink in a pub with a meal (with an accompanying adult)

18 - any where!

18 - any where!

under 5 --- may only be given alcohol on medical order

5 and over --- may consume alcohol, e.g. at home. It is only illegal for those aged 5-18 to drink alcohol on licensed premises (without meeting other licensing requirements)

under 16 --- may be present in a restaurant etc where alcohol is served with a meal and at the licensee's discretion may consume (but not purchase) alcohol bought by a parent or guardian

16 and over --- may purchase beer, porter, cider, or perry with a meal in an eating area on licensed premises (In Scotland wine also)

-----------

So Under-16's can consume alcohol bought for them with a meal. People 16-18 can buy alcohol with their meal for themselves.

However, there's also the stipulation in another law that:

under 14 --- may not be present in the bar of licensed premises unless accompanied by a person over 28, it is before 9pm and a children

There's no single law that outlines the ages at which people can drink... there's at least 3 or 4 different laws that all weigh in with one age restriction or another, which makes the whole thing a confusing mess to be honest. lol
