Rincewind Posted 5 September 2007 Posted 5 September 2007 For all we know the strikers may have a genuine grievance. People sometimes only see things from their own perspective - me included - and probably the only contact they have with the underground workers is when something goes wrong and they have a complaint. I had no complaints about the tube when I was in London recently but I was only there for a week. They were crowded but I expected that. There were all sorts, all lost in yheir little world with their heads in a book or a newspaper. Their schedule will be disrupted for three days but when its over they will not give a second thought to the staff who keep the underground running on whatever resouces is available.
Lillehamring Posted 5 September 2007 Posted 5 September 2007 The people I described were the ones who put that website together and ripped a Paul Weller tune to shreds!I have no sympathy for them whatsoever. A 3-day strike may seem harsh on commuters and tourists but London Underground management has been appalling for years. The mayor should have sorted it out a long time ago. i don't think you'll get a word of agreement from anyone who has experienced this... i lived in london for 10 years, sometimes with an hour commute across town, and the strikes were at least once a year, and massively disrupted everything... those who have no choice end up having to catch numerous buses on roads that are bursting with the lucky ones who have a car to catch.... the worst thing is, is that the strikes always tend to fall on days with major sporting events, conveniently, and that the drivers know that the will always get what they want because there is no quick-fix replacement for them. and as for the management, well, they don't care cause they just pay for the wage demands etc. with the year on year inflation busting rises in fares...

Lillehamring Posted 5 September 2007 Posted 5 September 2007 from last year - this is the sort of justification to strike: London Tube strike threat over ID cards planBack to Communities Publisher: Ian Morgan Published: 18/04/2006 - 09:01:51 AM Printable version Send to a friend Comment A fresh dispute involving thousands of Tube workers A fresh dispute involving thousands of Tube workers was threatened today over plans to introduce a new identity card. Union leaders pledged to resist proposals to give the card to around 8,000 London Underground workers including engineers and maintenance staff. Metronet and Tube Lines, which maintain the Underground network, said the card would be used to check workers' licences and would improve safety. But union officials said they believed the card would include fingerprint recognition and could be used to check clocking on and off times. Bobby Law, senior official of the Rail Maritime and Transport union, warned that if the plans went ahead without agreement there would be a ballot for industrial action. He voiced fears that the card could be used to discipline staff over any dispute about clocking on and clocking off times. "It is a gross infringement of human rights to use such a card to clock on and we will resist it," he said. Metronet said discussions were continuing and it remained to be seen whether the card would include any biometric features. "It is an option but it has not yet been agreed," said a spokesman. Union officials said introduction of the new card was being linked to a new pay deal. Copyright Press Association 2006 *i mean, any other industry, you'd just have to accept it and get on - and especially in a time of heightened security.... obviously, they have issues with clocking on, and note the reference to a new pay deal.... these fu(kers write their own contracts... *i don't know if this plan came to fruition
Steven Posted 5 September 2007 Posted 5 September 2007 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/6977260.stmAbsolutely fuming at the moment - these lazy final salary pension bastards bring the whole city to a standstill because they want a guarentee that theyre not going to lose any pension or their jobs as a result of metronet going bust.... Whole thing is a mess. Me and my other couple of million other london amigos had to walk to and from work today. My commute took me 90 minutes instead of 40. Arrrrgh, when they come back to work on friday I will be so tempted to shout a whole load of abuse at the driver. Even though its not their fault - its the maintenence workers! Ken Out. Boris In. Perhaps they should all resign en masse. Where would you be then.

Monk Posted 5 September 2007 Author Posted 5 September 2007 Stuck in a tunnel halfway between Wapping and Rotherhithe? Fortunately not. I made it in the almighty time of 1hr this morning thanks to some handywork switching trains. Strike is now off so maybe tonight I will get home in time to make it worthwhile having dinner. still really peeved with the whole thing though!

The People's Hero Posted 5 September 2007 Posted 5 September 2007 They can bugger off. Sack the lot of the scrotes. If they don't like the job, there is nothing to stop them getting a different one. Cushy.
Manwell Pablo Posted 5 September 2007 Posted 5 September 2007 Yeah, my heart bleeds for those little yuppie sh!ts who are paid more in a month than Tube workers are paid in a year! And I bet THEY don't have to worry about their pension schemes, either! Don't tube workers get like 30 grand a year?
Master Fox Posted 5 September 2007 Posted 5 September 2007 Don't tube workers get like 30 grand a year? Plus tips !
Geo V Posted 5 September 2007 Posted 5 September 2007 How many of you saying that actually LIVE in London? Because I've never, EVER had a problem with a Tube worker's English. Ever. There English isnt a problem but the general attitude is. Whenever I go on the tube its usually when I go about London with my 8yo son and I'm usually carrying a holdall for all his stuff . To get one of the lazy sods away from speaking to each other and actually doing the job is near impossible and I have had many a row with the lazy buggers who actually think they are being paid to talk, not provide a service.
Daggers Posted 5 September 2007 Posted 5 September 2007 Don't tube workers get like 30 grand a year? Shhhhh! I'm enjoying watching him make an absolute, total arse of himself.
Kent Fox Posted 5 September 2007 Posted 5 September 2007 I love Tube workers. They say things like this: 'To the gentleman wearing the long grey coat trying to get on the second carriage - what part of 'stand clear of the doors' don't you understand?' And this: 'Please move all baggage away from the doors.' (Pause) 'Please move ALL belongings away from the doors.' (Pause...) 'This is a personal message to the man in the brown suit wearing glasses at the rear of the train: Put the pie down, Four-eyes, and move your bl**dy golf clubs away from the door before I come down there and shove them up your a**e sideways!' And this: 'May I remind all passengers that there is strictly no smoking allowed on any part of the Underground. However, if you are smoking a joint, it's only fair that you pass it round the rest of the carriage.' All in understandable English too. They are a funny lot!
James. Posted 5 September 2007 Posted 5 September 2007 They're wankers for striking but I get the boat to and from work so my emotional involvement is limited.
Head Honcho Posted 7 September 2007 Posted 7 September 2007 How many of you saying that actually LIVE in London? Because I've never, EVER had a problem with a Tube worker's English. Ever. You don't need to LIVE in London to use the tube In fact many of the people you see on the tube are tourists and christ knows how they manage-I lived in Seoul for six months and found the underground workers there spoke better English then the useless twats currently doing jack shit in London.

Riiiight. So basically, you've come here once in the last six months to watch We Will Rock You, ride the Eye and wave at the houses of parliament. Good God. I've only been here two years and I already loathe the tourists.
Webbo Posted 7 September 2007 Posted 7 September 2007 How was that last issue of the Daily Mail? Good read was it? You tell him Finners, the Thatcher loving, Tory b@st@rd.
