maddog Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 http://www.thebluearmy.co.uk/details.asp?k...212008311956131 Play-off target amounts to 2.3 points per game by Andy Mann Leicester City will need at least 73 points by the end of the season to fulfil Ian Holloway's target of a top-six finish - if recent history in the Championship is anything to go by. That is the lowest points total achieved by the team finishing sixth in the division during the last 10 years. It was achieved by Crystal Palace in 2004 and West Ham the following season. Bolton had the highest points total of the teams finishing sixth over the last decade, with 76 points in both 1999 and 2000. Sheffield United finished on 74 points in 1998, as did West Bromwich Albion in 2001. Three clubs - Norwich in 2002, Palace in 2006 and Southampton last season - ended their campaigns in sixth on 75 points. It means that, over the last 10 seasons, teams finishing sixth in the Championship have averaged 74.5 points. So far this campaign, City have taken 31 points from their 28 games. To reach that minimum target of 73 points, they will need 42 more from the remaining 18 games - an average of 2.3 points per game. Holloway was last week not ruling out a late City drive for the play-offs, but he admitted making up the gap between 20th place and the top six would be “no mean feat”. The City boss told the Mercury: “Realistically, if we want to get into the play-offs, we need promotion form which is at least an average of two points a game, which is no mean feat. “But where do we start? Why can't we start by aiming at that? “That is how I feel and the lads understand that.” Cliff Ginnetta, City Supporters' Club chairman, said Monday's televised game against in-form Crystal Palace, who have forced their way into the top six on the back of a 15-game unbeaten run, would be a good opportunity to gauge City's chances. However, Ginnetta feels a top-half finish is a more realistic target. “I think it's about getting the team together at the moment but I hope I am proved wrong,” he said. “Top half of the table is realistic, anything else will be fantastic. “There's always a chance to go on a run. Crystal Palace have gone on this run and got themselves in the play-off places. Next week will be a good chance to measure ourselves.” Im as optimistic as anyone but if we don't go on a winning run for the next 5 or 6 games or so it aint gonna happen. Good chance to take 3 points off Palace though. And catch up 3 points on a play off side. Weve got to win the next 5 or 6 games at least to stand any chance, i mean we are still 13 points behind! And only 4 points above relegation
Manwell Pablo Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 Bill, mate, even by your standerds that article is an absloute joke.
harpendenfox Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 Even if it is by Andy...... Whilst it's good to be positive, this is daft. At the beginning of the season I'd have been happy with finishing 10th. From where we are now I'd be delighted and might surprised if we finished tenth.
Ric Flair Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 Bill, mate, even by your standerds that article is an absloute joke. I think Bill Anderson logged in to Andy Mann's account to write that.
mat_j101 Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 It would be a waste of time and money if we did go up this season anyway. We would probably do pretty much what Derby have done this year. Better to end this season on a good note with a decent run, get a couple more quality players in to get a bit of squad depth going, then maybe have a run next year.
Number 6 Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 A team who has been averaging 1.11 ppg is not going to be able to suddenly get 2.3, even with some decent signings, the best we can hope for is a strong finish maybe 12th and take that form into next season. Anyone thinking about play-offs is dreaming.

Ask the Derby accountants if they agree
Geo V Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 I'm optimistic but thats just down right delusional.
Jonezy Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 Shit, now we are talking about playoffs even after hard fought 0-0s against fellow relegation strugglers.....

Whilst I would absolutely love to see city promoted this season, we just simply aren't ready for the premiershit! Yes so getting a cash injection for going up would be nice but you still really need a nucleaus of a side otherwise you're just gonna get bummed by every team in the premiershit and so far this season what with all the changes going on its better we just concentrate on cementing our position in this league never mind the top league in this country!! Next season though I want to see our aim's as: 1)Promotion 2)Getting rid of ALL the deadwood, no comprimises and 3)Don't sack the gaffer if after six weeks the plans not going to plan
isaidno Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 This play off talk is stupid. We haven't won back to back games all season and we need to average 2.3 points per game

hebangsthedrums Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 I wonder how high the figure will get. I can see an article in 3 weeks saying 'All we need is 2.9 points per game to get in the play offs'. I don't live locally but no wonder some fans have such insane expectations when this is what the local media comes up with.
Daggers Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 Anyone mentioning play-offs in connection with this club this season should be stripped and placed in stocks in the middle of Thurnby.

Staf Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 Bloody hell why i am looking at the relagation places and whether we will be staying up the club are looking at promotion i think they are being very optimistic i would be elated with a top half finish
Geo V Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 With a spoon full of sugar, some pot luck and a pot noodle, we can win this league this season. Champions.
Joe. Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008  Oh dear Bill. He's excelled himself this time.
Thracian Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 :laugh:Oh dear Bill. He's excelled himself this time. Absolutely, or at least Bill's mate. And I didn't go to Norwich!
maddog Posted 22 January 2008 Author Posted 22 January 2008 :laugh:Oh dear Bill. He's excelled himself this time. Its not Bill its Andy. Its in bold how could you miss it.
maddog Posted 23 January 2008 Author Posted 23 January 2008 A must win game on Monday against Palace to even keep our tiny play off hopes alive. We are 13 point behind at the moment but if we win, we are guranteed to be 10 points behind the play offs. It just shows how tight this division is, if we had the extra 2 points by beating Norwich then Palace we would only be 8 points off. A must win Monday to keep our hopes alive, anything else and play offs this season will be 100% over. And i am being serious this time, i will never speak of the play offs again if we don't beat Palace. If we do beat them, i will go on about the playoffs a lot more

The problem with making up deficits is that the other teams in the League play every week as well. In motoring terms we're halfway through the race and have already been lapped by the leaders. I don't think anything happened at Norwich which would have reassured me that we would even win our battle against relegation, never mind be contenders for a play-off place. It's January 23 now. The window will be closing soon and while I still expect a signing or two we've probably lost out on some targets and there'll be a lot of competition for anyone with genuine class. So the final summary will be that the Promised Land as represented by an exciting, high quality side will still elude us and we will still be playing a serious game of catch-up after seasons of indifference and bad decision-making. Seems to me our first job is to get people fit. I mean really fit, fast and in people's faces. Even quality is no good if you're not fit enough to use it.
