Thracian Posted 1 February 2008 Posted 1 February 2008 He wont create anything I'll tell you that for free. Mind you neither has any other full back we have played there this season FROM OPEN PLAY! You keep repeating that last line and I suppose if you do so enough you'll come to believe it. Not that it particularly matters anyway. If a guy takes 10 penalties and scores em he's a lot more valuable than if he misses em. And it's the same with any other type of goal or assist. I've mentioned the numbers and if you truly think we can afford to waste that volume of chances you have a much different outlook to me.

Clapham is arguably the steadiest defender of the three. Anything Shush! can offer from set pieces, can easily be reproduced through Clemence/Hume & probably Oakley who certainly used to take decent free kicks and corners for Southampton.

Working purely off your statsitical theorys, Clemence has more assists than Shush! from free kicks, Hume has the same amount of goals. Neither of his were thanks to lucky deflections either, we do not need Shush! in our team to simply take free kicks (which I admit are of a very high standerd). From open play I honestly think his support play and creative abilty is blown completlely (and you have none of your precious stats to say different, apart from the fact that he's had alot of shots and not scored any of them) out of proportion by you and defensively the lads still not good enough. How long is this going to go on for? He's going, he's even happy about going. Please drop it.

Even if we hadn't of just released the best left back ever ever ever. Not your type of player, at all.
Mark Posted 1 February 2008 Posted 1 February 2008 He's gone, move the **** on already. Whats the point in this, it's been done, it's boring. Only time will tell, he'll get a chance at Leeds so thats the time to judge him, seeing as he's only been in and out the side here. For the record I'd rather we kept Shush! than bring in a player like Clapham but there is NOTHING I can do about it but moan, but fear not, I'm not going to post about this constantly until he's left the club.

Well said. Why don't you just delete everything he posts till he gets the point though? You moan about his posts - so delete them, like you do mine.
James. Posted 1 February 2008 Posted 1 February 2008 Another day another thread descending like the others. I don't give a f**k how many almost nearly not quite thereabouts half quarter chances Sheehan has or hasn't made. I want a left back that defends well and offers support to the left wing when appropriate. I don't give a f**k about set pieces, other players can do those, this isn't American football. Thracian's constant over the top ramblings help no one. The easily influenced will expect too much whereas the more balanced posters end up almost disliking the player because of the ridiculous levels of attention they get on these boards. This thread is about Clapham. GIVE HIM A F**KING CHANCE.

I am the new Thracian.

My point was more about not hating Clapham before he's even stepped in to the club.In an ideal world he would provide cover for Mattock. Good cover he would provide too. I just hope Joe can keep up the form he showed on Monday as it's obvious the strategy is to fast track him instead of have him play understudy. It'll be a struggle for him players his age aren't know for their consistency.
Ric Flair Posted 1 February 2008 Posted 1 February 2008 Clapham has been fairly crap now for the past 2 seasons, I can only assume this is the sort of signing that will purely be a squad filler or Holloway will re-vitalise his career. I'm not overly impressed, and i'm highly suspicious as to whether he'll be any use. But, Holloway at his previous clubs, signed some horrible players that we'd have gone wild about had they signed here, and they did a job for him in this league at a higher league position than we are now. I have a feeling, Mattock will be dropped very shortly, so either Clapham has to play well to keep his place or Mattock has to raise his game as well when he get's the chance. The only problem I see, is if Mattock is dropped, Clapham is crap, but Holloway still picks him over Mattock. But why worry about that right now? Let's go and get a 1-0 win on Saturday with a Clapham screamer with 30 seconds to go.
Babylon Posted 1 February 2008 Posted 1 February 2008 Another opportunity to talk about Shush!.... great.

If its not Shush!, it's Dodds, if not Dodds, it's Porter, if not Porter, it's King.........I could go on and on. Please Thracian, post your case for the player and we will read it and comment, like you do in forums, but plzzzzzzzz don't drag it up time and time again, in a number of different threads! I can't take this shit no-more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Flynny Posted 1 February 2008 Posted 1 February 2008 Mattock'll probably play 2/3 of our games between now and the end of the season. Clapham covering should give him the oppurtunity to rest after poor games and get the odd game at a lower level to boost his confidence. Also can I just say that by time Mattock's Shush!'s age I wouldn't be suprised if his set pieces were almost, if not as good. I can't remember what game he took a free-kick in but it was a bloody good one.
Nationwider Posted 1 February 2008 Posted 1 February 2008 Is there any possibility he might play Clapham in LM? Ollie has been quoted (who, Ollie? Never!) as saying he wants two lots of wide players. Clapham might be the more conservative, "away" choice with the Zsoltan of Swing starting at home? Thus Mattock and Clapham both starting on occasion? Or is that just crazy talk?

Clapham might be the more conservative, "away" choice with the Zsoltan of Swing starting at home? Thus Mattock and Clapham both starting on occasion? Or is that just crazy talk? Ollie was very impressed with Mattock as left midfield in the FA youth cup game against Palace, and he has hinted that Mattock could play the left midfield for the first team as well. Therefore I think, that Ollie is looking at Clapham left back and Mattock left midfield in games where we can't play Zolti. I believe Ollie is the right kind of manager to rejuvenate someone, so I'm sure Clapham will become a useful signing for us. Kind of like what Warnock has done with Derry.

I can't take this shit no-more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've hardly mentioned Dodds or Porter all season but broadly you're right - I really have tried to persuade you people to have some faith in young players who pass, move and play well together and really, there's so few of em round now. Perhaps, they'll all be gone soon and I can concentrate instead on our new 32-year-old left back who has a wealth of experience and who, despite Manwell's apparent scepticism, will almost certainly enjoy a new lease of life and do lots of things to help put some sparkle into our neglected"goals against" column. As an aside though, any idea why we didn't just give Nils a new contract? .
Scow Posted 1 February 2008 Posted 1 February 2008 As an aside though, any idea why we didn't just give Nils a new contract? . Maybe because we didn't have a manager at the time? Just a thought, like. Clapham is a useful signing - provides some experience at left back and can help Mattock along as well. I don't think Ollie views him as first choice, but I'd imagine he'll get a few games because Mattock can't be expected to play every game at his age. Some seem to forget he's only 17 and still has a lot to learn.
Daggers Posted 2 February 2008 Posted 2 February 2008 I expect, seriously, any signing to be good enough to waltz straight into the first team and make a dramatically positive contribution to the team - otherwise there is little benefit in signing them. If the primary purpose of any signing is to offer back-up to what we already have...then the back-up to what we already had is good enough thank you very much. The more I've thought about this signing the more uneasy I have become about it because it fails my criteria above. The only way I countenance it is down to Sheepyhan deciding that he wanted out and therefore Ollie (in turn) decided that his heart would not be in the fight and so he'd rather opt for an old lag fighting for a contract extension.
OzFox311 Posted 2 February 2008 Posted 2 February 2008 Lets hope he's as good as Ollie says he is, because at 32, he's not a young up and comer... But if he can perform and provide opportunities, his experience will be valuable... I'll wait and see how he goes before saying anymore...
