davieG Posted 16 February 2008 Posted 16 February 2008 From Sky Fifa president Sepp Blatter has reiterated his determination to implement the 'six plus five' rule in the Premier League. Blatter is keen to limit the number of foreign players in England's top flight, forcing sides to start every match with at least six England-qualified players. He believes the system would help break up the dominance of the 'big four', and is sure that it would do much to enhance the quality of international football. "In England, you have just four teams, maybe five, who are there fighting for the title and qualification for European competitions," he said in the Daily Mirror. Not enough "All the other clubs are simply playing not to get relegated. They are just sparring partners. That's not enough. "It is not only England. The situation is the same in France, Spain and Germany. A young player entering a big club has no more motivation that they can move through the ranks to play in the first team, because the manager will just go and buy players on the free market. "The clubs do not try to educate players. "You have to remember the origins of the game was local, the team was from a local area. "Then it became regional. But now we have to maintain it so that it is national, so that the clubs do not become an international ensemble like artists in a show. "No. Keep the national identity. If you do keep that national identity, you have other advantages. "The first advantage is that the population where the club is playing can identify with that club. This idea will balance the leagues and enhance the quality of the national team. Pressure "Go to any country and ask the population if they like their national team. They do like the national team, like the anthem, the national colours and the flag and to be together." Blatter, who recently vowed to block the Premier League's proposal for a round of 'international fixtures', plans to secure the agreement of Fifa's 208 member associations in Sydney in May. And after warning the Football Association it risks losing the bid for the 2018 World Cup if the Premier League went ahead with the global proposal, English football's governing body could be under pressure to vote in favour of Blatter's 'six plus five' rule. In order for a cap to be legal, Fifa will need the European Union to agree to make sport an exception to its employment laws, which guarantee freedom of movement for its citizens.
Webbo Posted 16 February 2008 Posted 16 February 2008 He may be a corrupt, meddling willy puller, but I'm starting to warm to Blatter.
Jay Posted 16 February 2008 Posted 16 February 2008 you can see the intention but it's still utter rubbish!! how will it break the top fours dominance? they have far more money and will just buy the better players and carry on even further with this stacking and racking thing by poaching every decent young player and letting them rot in the reserves like the do already!!
Simi Posted 16 February 2008 Posted 16 February 2008 He may be a corrupt, meddling willy puller, but I'm starting to warm to Blatter. He's got a long way to go yet, but he seems to be making the right noises at the moment. Wenger will be fuming about this I'd imagine. In fact they all will be. But the time has come to mix it up a bit and let them know who is in charge.
Zingari Posted 16 February 2008 Posted 16 February 2008 i suppose if you say enough things, eventually you'll say something sensible
Father Ted Posted 16 February 2008 Posted 16 February 2008 Sepp Blatter doesn't know a thing about football. What a kn*b he is. Although at least he is trying to set down his own laws for the Premiership from the bunch of money spinning clowns who run the Premier League.
DB11 Posted 16 February 2008 Posted 16 February 2008 Do Leicester field 6 players that are eligible to play for England on a regular basis?
Father Ted Posted 16 February 2008 Posted 16 February 2008 Do Leicester field 6 players that are eligible to play for England on a regular basis? That's for the Premier League. ermmm... Alnwick, Stearman, Mattock, Clemence, + many more British and Irish players.
purpleronnie Posted 16 February 2008 Posted 16 February 2008 Will never happen, tbh I dont think most english fans care about having so many foreign players in their side.
Jay Posted 16 February 2008 Posted 16 February 2008 That's for the Premier League. ermmm... Alnwick, Stearman, Mattock, Clemence, + many more British and Irish players. but of course they can't be counted as they are different counties to FIFA
Jimmy Posted 16 February 2008 Posted 16 February 2008 so long as it applies to Spain, Germany and Italy as well ...
TrickyTrev Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 It is against EU law so the only way it is implementable is if the clubs agree to mutual coercion, i.e impose the law upon themselves. Will only happen if there is european wide consensus, British Clubs are not going to even consider putting themseleves at a disadvantage to their Spanish and Italian rivals. I think it is a very good idea. The standard of foreign players would remain high, or even increase, if you only have 5 to chose from your going to make sure you don't waste one of those spaces on a medicore water carrier. Whilst to compete in Europe our clubs would be forced to make sure that there youth academies are the best in Europe. This will help them in the long run by reducing costs, will improve the national team and more importantly restore the idea that there is a good chance of playing for your local club even if you're from North London or Manchester.
Maybes Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 I like what he is trying to do, however I can't see it happening to be quite honest.
Stevosevic Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 From the team on Saturday we would have... Alnwick, Stearman, Mattock, Clapham, Clemence, Oakley, Howard... we would be fine, allowing us to criticise other clubs.
lavrentis Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 From the team on Saturday we would have...Alnwick, Stearman, Mattock, Clapham, Clemence, Oakley, Howard... we would be fine, allowing us to criticise other clubs. DJ Campbell as well.

Its a Minimum of 6 England eligible players on Saturday we had Alnwick, Stearman, Clapham, Oakley, Clemence, Mattock, Howard (though he is a Scotland B international), Campbell, J. Chambers & Fryatt with only McAuley, Kisnorbo, Hume & Laczko not meeting that criteria
Phube Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 I've never agreed with Blatter before!!!! Oh well you can't be a coomplete t**t your whole life!
AyewJoking Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 What power does Fifa have over teams who want to break away to form a "super league" If a super league ever happened would it still be governed by Fifa? I cant see the big four wanting to lose money by having less foreigners.
Joe. Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 Surely this would be a European thing and not a strictly Enlgish rule?
potter3 Posted 18 February 2008 Posted 18 February 2008 I've never agreed with Blatter before!!!!Oh well you can't be a coomplete t**t your whole life! Not even on the the 39th game debate?
