iancognito Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 I couldn't get to the Brum game but two of my mates went and though they said Howard did alright they were surprised he wasn't any better than his showings last season. There was no sign he was out to impress, just going through the motions. Even though friendlies are just run outs and training games, if you want to be in one of the two striker positions come the opening game, you put your heart and soul into it and Howard has never done this. I'll forgive any player being shit - even consistently shit - what I won't forgive is the lack of effort or application. But I'll wait for the new season to make a proper judgement. I'm enjoying the optimism, that's largely sweeping through the club lately, and a Steve Howard below par show won't ruin that.
Cobbo Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 I wasn't there and I thought that Ian Marshall was rubbish.
clazkel Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 I think a lot of the problem with Howard is that he is one of the few players left from last season, the worst season in the clubs history. And that's why there is a lot of the issue with Howard. I think part of the problem with Howard is from last season as i believe Holloway sticking with Howard upfront rather than Fryatt and Hume or Chambers lead to us being relegated. It didn't work with Howard upfront we didn't look like scoring and i do hold that against Howard, but it was mainly Holloways fault for playing him all the time. What frustrates me is Howards lack of effort and drive. He was more effctive yesterday but i still think he needs to put more effort in, or i don't think he deserves a place in the team. If he does start against MK Dons hopefully he will show drive and enthusiasm and i hope he does well this season if he is a regular in the first team (which i think will be the case)
leicesterseddon Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 i'm not going to lie...i think howard is a complete donkey. The grass on the pitch grows quicker than he can run, he doesn't win any headers because his height is negated by his extreme inablity to jump. to be fair, he hardly got any service last season and somehow i have to agree with the comments made by many people that 'he'll score goals in this division'. but nevertheless, he is a TERRIBLE player. anyone who goes to the matches can see that he is completely fooking useless. if an offer comes in - which is unlikely after his pre-season - we should bite their hands off. if i had my way, he would never play in a blue shirt again. The sad thing is that some people genuinely think he is a decent player - but these are probably the same people who didn't boo taylor when he returned to the walkers or kept backing holloway even when anyone with eyes could see the whole show was going pear-shaped.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 31 July 2008 Posted 31 July 2008 I think that there will always be resentment to any signings that were made last season because they will always be associated with that awful season.
lildave3 Posted 31 July 2008 Posted 31 July 2008  Kilworth Fox's sig. Excellent. I don't whether a mod has changed it or not, but still excellent.
renards Posted 31 July 2008 Posted 31 July 2008 I wasn't there and I thought that Ian Marshall was rubbish. Looked a pile of crap and 'hated football' But a fantastic player with nice hair
Guest Posted 31 July 2008 Posted 31 July 2008 I'll forgive any player being shit - even consistently shit - what I won't forgive is the lack of effort or application. Completely agree mate. New season and new slate as far as I'm concerned, I'll wait to see what Howard does this season
Father Ted Posted 31 July 2008 Posted 31 July 2008 McLeish felt that Brum were 'bullied' by Leicesters attackers for our 1st goal.Fryatt + Howard. Trained eye and all that That's what we need. Somebody who bullies there defence like Heskey did/does.
billyfox1 Posted 31 July 2008 Posted 31 July 2008 500k bid by Norwich (Aaahh Aahh) turned down source?

Foxhateram Posted 31 July 2008 Posted 31 July 2008 I think Howard is unfairly slaughtered on this Forum. Im not his biggest fan, and i agree his lack of effort sometimes is rather frustrating. However The bloke very often does what he is quite obviously being asked to do by the manager, which is to bring the ball down and hold it up, or flick it on to a striker or winger. Howard's roll is the same as what De Vreis was asked to do and unfortunatly he got the same sort of blasting for the same sort of things. Howard playing this roll will never score double figures, it's not what hes being asked to do, hes being asked to set up goals with his best abilities. This is what a big man is supposed to do, hold it up and play it on. With decent players around Howard him playing such a roll will be vital for us next season. Im sure he will start manay attacks and get quite a few assists. Heskey plays this roll for England, Sets Owen up a storm time and time again, but he never gets any credit for it, and just because he doesnt score loads of goals he loses his place. The last game i sore Heskey play for England we won 3-0 and Heskey set-up all three goals, he was dropped for the next game. Howard will get quite a few assists next season i can garuntee that, and hopefully with some decent crosses he may be able to get a few goals from set-peices (His main source of goals at Derby) He was poor last season, but the type of roll he was asked to play just wasnt read by the inept players around him. I feel a clean slate is required this season, the manager appears to be doing this. Lets just support the team, rather then bashing them for last season. I hope last season isnt going to haunt us this season. If we continue with such negativity, it will come back and bite us on the ass.
colbo68 Posted 21 September 2008 Author Posted 21 September 2008 Having been to the Orient game yesterday, I feel I have to make a comment on Howards apparent lack of effort - he has claimed himself and it has been written in the Mercury on more than one occasion that Howard's lack of goals has stemmed from a lack of service!! what utter bollox!!!! the man is at least two yards off the pace and is JUST NOT QUICK ENOUGH to get on the end of crosses into the box, whether they be in the air or on the floor - Lloyd Dyer yesterday was phenomenal in terms of getting the ball into the box early....time and time again, Howard was merely ambling forward and was found lurking on the edge of the penalty area, rather than being nearer the five yard area to finish the counter attacks - we were pulling out hair out, or at least whats left of it, seeing Howard no where near the ball when it came in - compare that, for example, to big Chris Iwelumo at Wolves who yesterday finished everything that came near him (before getting himself stupidly sent off) and we can see just how shit Howard is. without a doubt, the turning poin yesterday was the introduction of DJ's pace (why the hell did he not replace Howard sooner??) I just cannot understand the persistence in Howard and the long ball game - it did not work last year and City look an infinitely more potent side when the ball is played on the floor, either through the middle or via the flanks, with pace and guile - we were lucky to win that game yesterday, but thank God Pearson made the neccessary changes, particularly as I had city to win three one with Ladbrokes
syston_fox Posted 21 September 2008 Posted 21 September 2008 Im guessing you havent seen many games this season then.....
lildave3 Posted 21 September 2008 Posted 21 September 2008 Oh no he didn't. I admit, Big Steve was poor yesterday, but he's been very good so far this season.
colbo68 Posted 21 September 2008 Author Posted 21 September 2008 Im guessing you havent seen many games this season then..... been to every game home and away......have you?

Without Howard, who do we have as a physical presence up top? My guess is nobody. Who is better suited to partner Fryatt than Howard at present? Nobody again. Howard isn't looking the player he was for Derby in our squad, but he isn't doing an awful lot wrong either at the moment. Leave him be.
Cobbo Posted 21 September 2008 Posted 21 September 2008 been to every game home and away......have you? Pay attention then. He's been a very important part of a winning side. Note the pass for our goal yesterday, brilliant.
syston_fox Posted 21 September 2008 Posted 21 September 2008 been to every game home and away......have you? Have actually.... in fact the last City game I missed was his debut at QPR on Jan 1st! He's been pretty good this season. Yesterday was just an offday for him. He's been strong and held the ball up a treat and been a vital part of some of the build up play for the other goals.
