Ratings v Birmingham

Recommended Posts

Is it possible for the ratings to be averaged out for each game (not necessarily this one, but when the season starts)? I'm thinking of something automated (like the polls) - I think they do this on the BBC website.

Alternatively, maybe all match ratings could go in a thread that also has a poll for Man of the Match so you can vote and rate at the same time. It would make it easier to see whether there's a general agreement on who has played well if you haven't got the time to read all the ratings.

Don't let the guy intimidate you. If you think a bloke is better than five but not good enough for a six, rate him how you like.

Henderson: 6- Could have done better with the first goal, apart from that was solid and reliable.

Gilbert: 5- Looked slow early on, doesn't seem to pass forwards.

Tunchev: 6- Slow start, but grew and looked solid.

Hobbs: 6- Same as Tunchev

Mattock: 6- Got forward well and kept Larsson quiet.

Adams: 6- Did alright.

Kishishev: 5.5- Got stuck in.

Oakley: 5- Not brilliant, average.

Dyer: 6- Tried to get forward, sent a couple of good crosses in.

Howard: 6- Competed well, won most headers.

Fryatt: 7- Looked sharp, took his goal superbly.

Gradel: 7- Very impressed, looked lively and a real threat.

Wesolowski: 6- Showed some invention, should have scored.

Chambers: 6.5- Caused problems.

Campbell: 6- Tried hard, took too many touches.

Porter: 7- Inventive, fantastic goal.

Morrison: 6.5- Looked solid and composed.

I agree with 75% of what you say :)

Seems she certainly got noticed. Her urchin was no better. Mind you there was a little fella in front of me all last season who got so canned before every match he was literally up and down three or four times a half and could only have seen about a quarter of the football all year.

He was the lucky one!

Good to put a face your posts

The profile posters give you gave you away....

Bloke with beard watching every kick and move whilst making notes.

Must say had a chuckle at your reation every time you had her fat ass in your face, not always a bad thing...but not during a match.

I also sat right in line with Howards better moves, looked decent from that position

Pity you didn't say hello. I might have offered you a fiver to swop places! :D

Yes I suppose, but that was the only time he looked threatening. Pearson was always shouting to Mattock to stay tight, and he did for the majority.

And not marking on the corner, the corner that was won with a long ball down his side and the 3rd goal came down his side.

Birmingham noticed the weak link and kept hitting the ball in that direction in the last 20 mins.

Unfortunately Mattock's critics are right. I wouldn't put all the blame on his shoulders by any means but the fact remains that he's looking a far better attacker than defender at the moment and the goals against column must be giving ex-defender Pearson cause for concern.

We're missing Kisnorbo no question. I was never happy with McAuley making two non-passers in the centre of defence but Kisnorbo gort in where it hurt. He covered the ground, put in the tackles, put his body in the way if necessary and was always around to give Mattock some cover or whoever some cover.

What we've got now it Mattock trying to be a more attacking wing-back but no-one guarding any space he leaves behind him. That should be a given and would help counterbalance Mattocks continued positional problems in certain situations which are probably inevitable given his youth.

I've always argued that Mattock's been pushed too far too fast. He's never - at this stage - been as good a full-back as Sheehan whose dead ball kicks and general support play have been missed even more than I imagined but, whatever, we either need to risk James Chambers on the left or to sign an alternative left-back so that Mattock can still continue his development but at a more realistic pace and with less responsibility.

Mattock can still do well but it's time to end the mythology and get down to the sustained hard work he needs to learn his craft properly. And for him to put all thoughts of signing for a Premiership club behind him for at least a season and probably two.

After watching Mattock against Brum, I think moving to a Prem club will near enough ruin him. His positional play is more often than not slightly shakey, simply down to his experience. A good full season or two with us will polish that up, and ultimately make him worth more.

His uncle says he's not going to stay here though. We'll have to wait and see.

On a side note, I've not seen a player like Gradel for a little while. Every time he got the ball he turned and looked forward, wasn't scared to take on the full back, and 9 times out of 10, created some sort of chance. He's always hungry for the ball, and his work rate is second to none IMO. The Birmingham players didn't actually know what to do with him, and just resorted to bringing him down most of the time. Keep his attitude and work rate right, and he'll destroy league one.

I think left-back is a position that definitely needs to be covered, if someone gets behind Mattock and whips in a cross it is probably a goalas Henderson isn't that good at collecting crosses. Without a new left-back or goalie or both Tunchev and Hobbs are going to be very busy.

Aye and clubs were battering our door down with multi million pound bids for him.

I've never said Sheehan was worth a multi-million pound bid, and don't think Mattock is either but nor do I really give a toss what other clubs do or think.

There've not been any multi-million pound bids for Gradel (who's probably worth it) but that doesn't mean I was wrong to say 12 months ago, together with others, that Gradel was a better bet for our right wing than Newton.

Our chairman and manager didn't think so and we got relegated with not a single goal from a recognised right (or left) winger all season. Costly mistake that from the professionals you are so keen to herald, especially considering the goals Gradel scored.

I just hope we don't have similar misjudgements this season involving Porter and King.

Porter hardly needs a case making. Even returning from serious injury he's scored two and made at least five as our teams have amassed 20 goals in his four appearances.

With King the case is more subtle. Yes his three goals and, at least three assists speak in themselves but King is also the only central midfielder we have (ignoring the unknown of Adams in a central position) who can offer aerial assistance and close marking at defensive set-plays, who can score and create goals regularly from the centre given chance and who can provide a much-needed aerial presence in attack when given licence.

Given that he's as good a passer as anyone else too, I really cannot understand why his other attributes don't help to earn him more recognition. Because Weso and Oakley aren't much use at defensive free-kicks and neither of them look a force in the front third either at such times as they ever get there.

That's not to call either bad players. It's just that we really need to ask ourselves if we can afford two such players in the centre instead of playing one at a time and using a potential goalscorer/goalstopper as the other.
