Snow and sub-zero temperatures are on the way as many parts of the UK brace themselves for a cold snap over the weekend.

Forecasters have warned that a band of rain, sleet and snow is sweeping southwards, with strong, freezing winds making the temperatures feel even colder than they are.

While not record-breaking lows for March, temperatures are below average, with no sign of a respite in the near future, according to Tony Conlan of MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association.

"Saturday is going to be a transition day," he said. "Rain and sleet will affect many areas, turning into snow on northern hills."

It will be a mixed day for different parts of the UK however, with temperatures across most regions being between 3C and 6C, but getting to as high as 15C in parts of south west England, with Torquay likely to be the warmest place.

Over the weekend, wind speeds will increase, going up to as high as 30mph in Devon.

Mr Conlan said: "There will be snow showers on Saturday night, particularly over north-east England and east Scotland. What people will notice then is the strength of the cold, north-easterly wind, which is going to really pick up.

"It will be bitterly cold in the wind and temperatures will mostly stay below zero as we head into Sunday. Sunday will be a day of sunshine and a scattering of snow showers. Much of the UK will see snow, but Scotland and the North East will again see the most snow."

He said that while the weekend would see snow showers for many places, the coldest weather was going to arrive early next week. On Monday, temperatures are unlikely to be above zero anywhere in the country.

"There are no signs of spring anywhere on the horizon," added Mr Conlan.

This Snow is a disgrace, last night when I went bed at the hardcore time of 3.30am, it looked like someone came down in a truck and scattered flour over my street.

Today has been an utter mixture, of sunny spells, cloudy spells, and slight snow showers.

I just wish it would make it's mind up.

Was rather scary yesterday coming back through Rutland over Wardley Hill - the drifts from the fields made sure visibility was totally zero at certain point, butt was firmly clenched!!! Traffic was stopped on Wardley too for about an hour to clear snow off the road, road was closed both ways so we couldn't even turn around!

The Met Office has issued a warning of snow for tomorrow in Leicestershire.

A spell of sleet or snow is likely to spread westwards towards the county overnight as reported earlier.

Icy eastern winds will ensure it feels the cold and sleet or snow is forecast for some parts of the county.

The Met Office issued the warning at lunchtime. Spokesman Charlie Powell said: "The winter is getting a bit long in the tooth now and we still have some sleet and wintry showers coming for the Midlands.

"Tomorrow will see more easterly winds, which means it feels very cold.â€

We begin spring with a taste of winter. More snow is forecast over the next few days for The Midlands. The Met Office has issued an Amber Alert for northern counties that will see the heaviest of the snowfall. 30cm is possible on higher ground of the Peak District and Staffordshire Moorlands with 5-10cm on lower levels. It will also be very windy which will make driving conditions particularly nasty with blizzard-like conditions.

The snow will arrive tonight as a band of rain currently heading our way from the South-West collides with the colder air in our region and readily turns to snow. As previously mentioned it is northern areas that will see most of the snow, anywhere from Birmingham northwards. It will be windy too and feel bitterly cold with temperatures freezing or below.

Tomorrow many if us will wake up to snow on the ground and more will fall through the day. Further south it will be more of a rain and sleet mix on and off through the day. Further north it will mainly fall as snow. Once again it will be windy and temperatures will hover around freezing. However add in the wind chill and it will feel more like -5c.

The rain band will stall across northern Britain before heading further south once again on Friday night and Saturday. All of us could see more significant snowfall.

The snow will continue on Saturday before it turns drier for Sunday. However it will remain windy and icy cold.
