http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/Snow-ice-make-roads-treacherous-Leicestershire/story-18491713-detail/story.html#axzz2OFcGnef8

It might be the first week of spring, bit 10cm of snow and temperatures feeling as low as -7C are predicted for Leicestershire.

Forecasters are expecting heavy snowfall today and tomorrow, with freezing temperatures expected throughout the weekend and the start of next week.

This month is already on track to be the coldest March since 1962, contrasting with this time last year when Leicestershire was enjoying temperatures of up to 22C.

Gritters were out in force last night and motorists were advised to take care on the roads.

The warnings comes amid fears the weather could case major disruption to the travel networkicon1.png, similar to the rush-hour gridlock in the city when six inches of snow fell on January 18.

Leicester Mercury weatherman Dave Mutton, who is predicting we will be waiting until mid-April for more spring-like weather, said: "Winter is back with a vengeance, so people shouldn't be putting their thermals away just yet.

"We could be seeing up to 10cm of snow settling in some parts. The roads will probably be slow again and then all weekend it's going to be bitterly cold with frost.

The return of the big freeze has been prompted by a band of rain clouds moving east, which was due to collide with a patch of icy air last night.

The Met Office said the temperature could drop as low as -3C (26F) on Monday, which with the wind chill factor could feel like -7C (19F).

Dave said: "So far, the average temperature has been 5C lower than the average we expect for March. In March last year it was much hotter – we had temperatures up to 22C (72F)."

He said the record for the snowiest March day in Leicestershire could possibly fall this weekend.

The current record is 20cm (8in), which fell on March 4, 1970.

The AA is warning of a risk of major travel disruption and hazardous driving conditionslb_icon1.png.

Darron Burness, the organisation's head of special operations, said: "It's going to be a real witch's brew of driving wind, rain and snow, which will inevitably cause disruption on the roads.

"Drivers should be well prepared, as even short journeys can quickly turn bad.

"Keep your speed down, as visibility could be seriously reduced and there's a risk of localised flooding – and motorists should just stay out of flood water.

"Also, with temperatures set to remain low, any snow that settles will likely persist for several days, so be wary of icy patches."

Last night, both the county and city councils had their gritters out.

Leicestershire County Council has 3,000 tonnes of grit in stock and has ordered another 1,500 tonnes, due to begin arriving on Monday.

Lesley Pendleton, county council cabinet member for environment and transportlb_icon1.png, said: "We are geared up to keep the road network up and running during icy and snowy weather.

"Our gritters are ready to roll and we have been monitoring our grit levels throughout the winter to ensure we have enough.

"In snowy weather, we would advise people to take a bit of time to plan journeys and give themselves a more time to get from A to B."

Leicester City Council said: "We have 1,250 tonnes of salt in our stocks, which is enough to cover us for 10 days of snow or 50 icy nights."

Where is the a worse climate, bearing in mind that some people enjoy the cold and some people enjoy heat and we get neither?

I guess its a difficult one as people will have different views of what they find 'the worst'...plus there are places where theres a big north/south divide so say germany where north germany (having lived there) was just terrible, so much rain, terrible winters and poor summers too, but south germany can have really nice summers. Denmark was awful too not sure I saw the temperature above 20 degrees for the 3 summers I spent there.....Places like canada have extremes too, some places very similiar average climate to the UK some places worse, I know someone over there who constantly knocks how bad the weather is.

I know people who i worked with in houston actually moved north because they couldnt bare the heat and prefered the lower temperatures and mixed seasons.

Then I guess you have the extremes places where huge numbers of people die from either the tremendous heat or the terrible cold, some would say that is worse than a bit of snow and mild summers.

But I guess its perspective of the individual.

As some of you taste snow today I'll let you know that I've just been walking along the beach and then back through the forest.

Sound of waves crashing and birds singing in the sunshine and not 1 sound from humanity.

Great.

I'd rather be here than Siberia or the Sahara. I like that we get a bit of variation and its rarely too hot.

It does get very dreary though.

Rarely "too hot"? It's barely ever even warm. I can't remember the last time we had a decent spell of 25 plus. Even in mid-summer it's not uncommon for it to be 15 or 16 degrees. That's mild, not even warm, nowhere near hot, not even close to too hot. Too hot is 35 plus. Anything between 25 and 35 is wonderful.

I'm not a hot weather person, really, I'm too hot in the mid to high twenties. I especially consider it too hot when it's that warm during the night.

I rarely complain about the cold, though. Even at minus ten odd I'm snug. I'm only bitter about it now because we've had no variation for almost a year and I want to enjoy the outdoors.

I hate being cooped up.

Organisers postponed it for safety reasons. New date April 12th giving you more time to donate a sponsorship.

Sponsor you for what? Being brave enough to sleep outside like a homeless person, as long as it's nice and warm and dry? Come off it mate. Imagine what the real homeless people must be thinking now. Pretty sure they can't just cancel being homeless because they don't fancy the weather. I know it's not up to you Ken old chap, but the organisers have got a lot of answering to do if you ask me. I'm pretty upset to be honest.

I suppose they don't want lawsuits. I was not looking forward to it in this weather.

Message read;

It is with regret that Action Homeless has had to postpone tonight's sleep out event. The weather forecast deem it too hazardous for anybody to stay outside and so we will be focusing our efforts on ensuring real rough sleepers are found beds for the night.

The event will now take place on April 12th.

It is not only the ones that were taking part in the sleep out they were concerned with. There were the volunteers that would be serving food and organising activities would also be affected by the poor weather..

When was the last time we had snow like this at this time of year? It's pelting it down here and it's nearly flipping summer.

Blimey time flies it only seems a day or so ago someone said to me that it was the first day of spring.
