Just watched the inauguration on CNN. Absolutely delighted that Obama is finally in office after such a long campaign. My girlfriend is American so it was decent to sit through the ceremony knowing what it means to her and other Americans. I just hope he lives up to his promises.

On a side note, I loved the way he thanked Bush for his presidency then proceeded to absolutely slate what he had done. Brilliant. I'm so happy to see the back of Georgey Dubbya :)

2 million people there! Unbelievable....

Was a very poweful speech. He talks so confidently and powerfully, just hope he can carry out what's set out.

Oh and can anyone imagine Gordon Brown attempting anything like that?

No, because he has never been elected, and he never will be elected!

The crowd should have chanted "cherio cherio" to Mr Bush. that would have been fascinating . ;)

That's how you do a speech!!

I think the coverage went OTT with the "black" thing. Going on the live feed I was watching on my computer you wouldn't even know there was a white person there!!! :D

My Presidenttttt is blackkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk,

My Lambos Blueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I knew you would come up with that lol

Every time the camera focused on an earnest face in the crowd, there was always someone asleep behind them. :D

:giggle: That was absolutely ace, made my day. Bush looked like he had no idea where he was for the whole thing. How the man ran that country for eight years will boggle my brain forever.

No change from the last 8 years then :P

*Expects Obama to appear on The Simpsons soon*

America, get over with this mania and start making the world a better place. Again.

We all need change.

Bills do it, too.

Apart from Clintons.

Would you like to use words rather than emoticons? Why is saying the coverage went over the top with it's focusing on black people in the crowds etc wrong?

It's a massive leap forward with him being elected, but he's as much black as he is white. On the fox news feed I was watching, every single person they spoke to, showed in the crowd. If they focused on a member of the armed forces or in the band... they were black.

It's a huge day for African Americans and it should be rightfully celebrated. BUT... he is everyone's president in America whether they be white, black, yellow or green. Sole focus on the black aspect was wrong IMO.

To only have someone so inspiring in this country!!! :( He could turn out to be crap, but boy he can speak (except the cock up in inauguration).

Apparently Roberts got it wrong and Obaba stopped while he corrected himself. link

a) He might be as much white as black but all the emphasis is on how black he is despite the fact that he's cappuccino like a whole lot of other people.

b) The focus on black was exactly what we could do without. Until the last three or four years I never gave a thought to people's colour. I thought of everyone as just people and good luck to anyone who made something of themselves.

Now I think white people are being systematically turned into and treated like second class citizens and I'm bloody sick of it.

All the fawning of Obama is nothing more than emotion and the reaction of those who will be glad to see the back of Bush. Obama may make a brilliant president and I sincerely hope that's the case. But I'll judge him on what he does now he's got the job rather than some stage-written speech.

My hope and wish is that he gets on with being a wise and honourable President rather than a black President or a coffee-coloured President or an Afro-American President or a handsome president or a president who looks like a sodding monkey. I don't care. I care about his statesmanship.

Obama is clearly a very adept orator as he has proved both today and in the election campaign. What he has to say sounds far more palatable and reasonable than the utterances of his predecessor, surely the worst president in living memory.

As Thracian says however, the true measure of his abilities starts tomorrow and he will ultimately be judged by his actions, not by his words. There is a great deal of hope surrounding Obama and I'm sure that all of us are hoping that he can live up to the world's expectations. 2 million people in Washington today and many more around the world believe that Obama can make a difference and repair the damage caused by Bush and his warmongering cronies. He has a lot of challenges to face and will need all the support he can get from his administration.
