Red Leicester Posted 25 April 2009 Posted 25 April 2009 How d'you know she's an "animal"? How else do you think I celebrated our promotion last night?
stez Posted 26 April 2009 Posted 26 April 2009 i suppose if 'they' talk about (practically) anything for long enough, it'll eventually happen. weren't we all supposed to die from SARS? then it was bird flu, mad cow disease we, especially in leicestershire especially, were doomed. slightly different, but i remember 'them' talking about a possible recession since they days of the 'dot-com' bubble bursting, and when was that? 1999, 2000? and a mere 8 years later it happens! goodness i have nothing but respect for these media employed experts, they're right on the button! isn't yellow stonepark going to disappear into some massive super volcano too? loving the optimism out there
Vacamion Posted 26 April 2009 Posted 26 April 2009 The 24 rolling news channels are screaming "PANDEMIC" and cranking up the fear factor with drama-laden footage of Mexicans wearing masks and graphics of maps with throbbing infection hotspots. Because the same channels have cried wolf before, I don't know whether to consider this as the real threat it is being reported as, or just another instance of over excited news editors...

According to the news last night 60 people have already died, it's quite possible that there is something in this.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 26 April 2009 Posted 26 April 2009 Exactly what sort of animal do I need to shag? I could do with some time off work
Thracian Posted 26 April 2009 Author Posted 26 April 2009 How else do you think I celebrated our promotion last night? Two birds at the same time, eh? What if we win the Championship?
Vacamion Posted 26 April 2009 Posted 26 April 2009 If the end of the World is nigh, you need to get in and about some thighs like that while you can.
lou Posted 26 April 2009 Posted 26 April 2009 81 people out of 110 million isnt exactly prolific.... Im sure a good normal flu outbreak kills more elderly people over here in a Winter? It hasnt said what age etc the poor sods are that died but theyre more than likely older/weaker people. Not that Im saying thats good of course. I just think its something else for the press to panic everyone over again like they did all the other things Stez mentioned. We were all gonna die from Bird flu a few years ago. All any of us can do is eat a healthy diet and exercise a bit and stay strong. Which is what we really should be doing anyway
Phube Posted 26 April 2009 Posted 26 April 2009 They've been takling about this in the Infection Control circles in hospitals for about 2 years... It's only a matter of time always one about ever 30 odd years... we're about 5 years overdue!! They have mask training for all the nurses too!

All any of us can do is eat a healthy diet and exercise a bit and stay strong. Which is what we really should be doing anyway One of the great worries about this particular strain is that it's taking the young ones. I'm not sure the press deserve pillorying. The authorities shamefully pilloried that seisomologist who anticipated the recent Italian earthquake and pleaded with people to get out. Doubtless, in retrospect, a good many families now wish they or their loved ones had heeded his words. If warning is given it's up to individuals what they do. If you were a medical expert with reason to believe the population were at risk because of something you knew, would you stay quiet for fear of starting panic or would you say something whatever the eventual outcome? Herewith reference to the ages of some patients involved and opportunity to notice the high percentage death rate: "Canada's Public Health Authority (PHAC) said today in a situation update that Mexican authorities have asked its assistance in determining the cause of two clusters of severe respiratory illnesses that have occurred this month. A cluster in Mexico City involved 120 cases and 13 deaths; the other occurred in San Luis Potosi, where 14 cases and 4 deaths were reported. Three deaths were reported from other locations: One from Oaxaca in southern Mexico and two from Baja California Norte, near the US border. The PHAC report said the disease outbreak struck some healthcare workers and that most patients were previously healthy young adults between the ages of 25 and 44. Symptoms included fever, headache, ocular pain, shortness of breath, and fatigue that rapidly progressed to severe respiratory distress in about 5 days. Mexican officials detected some influenza A/H1N1 and influenza B viruses, but have apparently ruled out H5N1 virus involvement. The PHAC said it received 51 clinical samples from Mexico for testing at its National Microbiology Lab."
Trav Le Bleu Posted 26 April 2009 Posted 26 April 2009 First bird flu... now this. Pfft, pigs might fly!
Head Honcho Posted 26 April 2009 Posted 26 April 2009 I fly out to Mexico in 2 weeks and I'm not sure if I should be worried or not
Thracian Posted 26 April 2009 Author Posted 26 April 2009 I fly out to Mexico in 2 weeks and I'm not sure if I should be worried or not I don't think anywhere will be immune given the number of flights that will already have gone in and out of Mexico and other areas known to have infected patients. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20090426/twl-de...ba-3fd0ae9.html

stez Posted 27 April 2009 Posted 27 April 2009 I fell sorry for local GP's at the minute... I bet they are inundated with idiots thinking they have swine flu. there was a lady on the radio claiming to have 'flu-like symptoms' and she sounded well chirpy, when asked what the symptoms were she said 'a runny nose and a bit of a sore throat' that sounds slightly more like a bit of a cold to me...i had the flu late last year and i couldn't get out of bed for a week and a half.

The number of people I came across at work getting all martyr like on the basis that they'd come back to work after one day off with flu!
