Bellend Sebastian Posted 10 February 2011 Posted 10 February 2011 used to goto a shop on Granby Street more or less opposite The Poundstretchers. Then it moved closer to the Train station then just died. cant bloody remember the name. Anyone? That's MG Discs. Do I win £5? It was originally near the sex shop, then moved to the bigger one a bit closer to town, which was the beginning of the end. It was already dying when they moved to the shop that I think is where Sheehans are now. If they'd stayed in the little shop it might still be there, you never know

Thats the one and the owners name was Mike something(began with G believe it or not!!!) I echo your statements. It was a very decent shop and he was a very knowledgeable bloke.

It was a very decent shop and he was a very knowledgeable bloke. The demise of that shop, when Mike was nowhere to be seen and the young fella was left running it was very sad. They were struggling to even get stock, and that's when I realised that my romantic dream of running a record shop was perhaps no longer realistic (if it ever was). It was particularly poignant when I saw in the Mercury that he'd been declared bankrupt. Ouch I'm just pleased Rockaboom is still there
hairy Posted 10 February 2011 Posted 10 February 2011 The demise of that shop, when Mike was nowhere to be seen and the young fella was left running it was very sad. Thats when I stopped shopping there. Mike was the man who held it together. I think he got very ill as I remember. The last time I went in there (the shop past the station) they were selling porn dvds and that was the end for me.
rico Posted 10 February 2011 Posted 10 February 2011 Anyone remember Cank Street Records next to Ye Olde Sweetie Shop, you went down into the basement to it? Also i remember top of Siver Street, downstairs in the Very Bazaar, there was always PIL playing or some really heavy dub
Mickey O'Neil Posted 10 February 2011 Posted 10 February 2011 Anyone remember Cank Street Records next to Ye Olde Sweetie Shop, you went down into the basement to it? Also i remember top of Siver Street, downstairs in the Very Bazaar, there was always PIL playing or some really heavy dub I'm too young but my wife reckons it wasn't downstairs...just at the back of the shop. A *tiny* area and you had to queue to get in! I also used to go to (New??) World Records. He was on London road near those weirdo Freemasons, moved to Clarendon Park afterwards. I used to go to a shop on Granby St, near the Plantagenent. You had to go in a doorway, upstairs and past a massage parlour! Can't remember what that was called. He had a good selection of vinyl.

Zingari Posted 11 February 2011 Posted 11 February 2011 Cougars ? it just used to be called "grab-a-granny" back in the day . it's amazing what a bit of creative rebranding can do for old goods
Bellend Sebastian Posted 11 February 2011 Posted 11 February 2011 It was called Boogaloo Records. I've just given myself £5
hairy Posted 11 February 2011 Posted 11 February 2011 Anyone remember Cank Street Records next to Ye Olde Sweetie Shop, Yes. Thats the one which was below the Art Cafe The one up London Road, World Records, was the only place you could get reggae from at one point unless you were lucky to find some in Brees in Wigston
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 11 February 2011 Posted 11 February 2011 I used to like Ainleys until I went in one afternoon to buy the new Audioslave record, and couldn't spot it hidden amongst all the garbage they had on sale there.
OriginalRobboFOX Posted 11 February 2011 Author Posted 11 February 2011 You could buy shit on import at Ainleys. And it had a VHS section too. Bought nuff vids from there....
Parafox Posted 12 February 2011 Posted 12 February 2011 Yeah, Ainley's... Always good and they would do me a deal cos I was DJ at the Carousel pub (now long gone) which used to be at the top of Charles St. for those who remember. And the Revolver I remember was near the Market Place but I thought it was in one of the Arcades off Market Place. I remember it being kinda dingy and atmospheric with loads of oldies which i used to buy for the pub. I still have dreams about getting records from there but the dream ends when I get to the Carousel and there are no record decks there anymore... weird. And wasn't there a record shop in some kind of basement, somewhere? Near Paper Tiger i think, maybe that was Cank Street Records... memory fades with alcoho... i mean, age !

Parafox Posted 12 February 2011 Posted 12 February 2011 was that in the late 70s ?when it was one of the new breed of "funpubs" ?did you used to play all that stuff like the "lambeth walk "?i used to go in there loads , and to the Van Damme on northgate ( that was much better actually ) Yep, that was the time... the barstaff used to wear costumes, we had revolting food eating competitions, a mad bit where someone would come running through the pub dressed in some kind of costume and act stupid with punters. There was all kinds of stuff going on and people would queue to get in. The night always ended with "You'll never Walk Alone" I used to do an "impression" of Mick Jagger as a flasher.... OHMYGOD!!!! I think people went there mostly cos of the "singalong" style of music that karaoke still features a lot, y'know, Daydream Believer, Amarillo, Slade, Rubettes, etc etc etc.. too many to mention... loads of good old stompers (the music, not the people)!! I still have lots of the old vinyl discs in my garage from then. The Van Damme was better ONLY because they had strippers, you perv

The Van Damme was baetter ONLY because they had strippers, you perv i think i've still got some photos of that somewhere , i 'll see if i can find them and post them on here seriously though , that's brought back some great memories . we had some great nights in the carousel , and yes the lure of the strippers did rather cloud my judgement and drag acts were also another specialty of Van Damme . these sort of funpubs blossomed for a few years in the 70s and then just seemed to disappear , maybe they could make a comeback
Parafox Posted 12 February 2011 Posted 12 February 2011 these sort of funpubs blossomed for a few years in the 70s and then just seemed to disappear , maybe they could make a comeback The Carousel literally disappeared... in a cloud of dust to make way for St Georges Way. It would be great if funpubs were back, we tried to achieve a good old-fashioned "knees-up" atmosphere and i am proud to have been part of it in its hey-day. There was rarely any trouble, the punters were fantastic in their enthusiasm and every night was like a party. We even had regulars that came down from Sheffield every Friday just to come to The Carousel ! It was definitely an era for me. A tiny tiny taste of showbiz... Anyone remember Granny's nightclub in the late 70's - early 80's... I worked there for a while too and met some of the City players who used to come in. Unfortunately, at that time I wasn't much of a footy fan so I can't really remember who they were, but I seem to remember Frank Worthington and I think Mark Goodwin or Goodrich or something being around the place occaisionally, maybe Keith Weller too. Not sure.

Parafox Posted 12 February 2011 Posted 12 February 2011 Yes, Wednesday night it was, I'd forgotten that. One time on a quiet night, we the staff, (doorman, me and manager) and a couple of regular punters, paid the barmaid £5 to go topless for 10 minutes... believe it or not we even had to have a whip round (not a euphemism) to get a fiver. She did it, bless her.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 12 February 2011 Posted 12 February 2011 Granny's was great too , wednesday night ( i think ) super value , entrance fee and all you could drink at the bar for £6 ( or something like that ) ,cracking nights I thought it was 5s and 3d back in your day Zin?
Zingari Posted 12 February 2011 Posted 12 February 2011 I thought it was 5s and 3d back in your day Zin? Cheeky young whippersnapper When I first started drinking , Shipstones beer was about 1/6 a pint. So yes , 5/3 was effectively enough for all I could drink, plus fish and chips , 10 woodbines and my bus fare home But realistically i needed at least 10 bob for a good night out ( 10 bob was paper money in those days ) Do you realise it's 40 years ago this month that we changed from real money to decimal ?
Parafox Posted 12 February 2011 Posted 12 February 2011 Shipstones beer was about 1/6 a pint. Ahh yes, a pint of Shippo's And 9d (ninepence, approx 4p in todays money) for a bag of whelks off the bloke in the straw hat and white coat. Anyone remember the old glass beer pumps that used to have a kind of plunger inside that moved back and forth to dispense a half pint, I'm sure I'm not imagining it, they did exist, usually in Working mens Clubs i think.
