Rocket-Ron Posted 1 June 2009 Posted 1 June 2009 Hands up if Ainleys used to sell your EP.*Hand up*. Which Is?
Finnegan Posted 1 June 2009 Posted 1 June 2009 Which Is? Oh it was utter crap, don't get me wrong. But it was right there. We still have a photo of it sat there next to Audioslave somewhere.
Chairman of the Bored Posted 1 June 2009 Posted 1 June 2009 Revolver started as a market stall. Top day was a 3 hour stint in Osbornes (watching Willie Thorne paste all comers). picking up a good piece of vinyl at Revolver, then down the City, then off to Zetters to check pools coupons for 3 hours, then out for a beer, then home for Match of the Day. 1974-75 era (ish).
Bellend Sebastian Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 I've done a very quick web search and the answer wasn't obvious, but does anyone know when Ainleys closed down? Someone in the office reckons it was the 1990s, but although this is clearly bollocks, I'm sure I'm going to find out it's longer ago than I think it is
Bert Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 We used to play the Ainleys six a side team down six a side. That was about 7-8 years ago now.
Finnegan Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 My first band's EP was on sale in Ainleys, we've got a photo of it somewhere next to Audioslave on the shelf. That dates about early 2003?
Bellend Sebastian Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 Thanks everyone, that ties in with my belief that it was there until about 2005 or maybe even 2006. I spent a lot of time in there in my youth but less in its last few years as I used to go to MG Discs more then, which also bit the dust long ago. Do other people miss these places or is it just old sods like me? (I'm 36. 36!). If anyone's been reading the business pages recently, we might not even have an HMV before long
Trav Le Bleu Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 Yeah, definitely. I can remember going in there on my dinner break when I worked at Nasty West, which was 2002-2005. I do miss it, and I don't. I have a found recollection of Ainleys (back to when it was on High St (and it was MUCH further up than anyone else says - it was next to Dimensions Computers (back in the 8-bit days), which itself was opposite Loseby Lane... where Rollersnakes is (is THAT still there?) Which comes round to why I can't really say that I do miss these shops - because I never go into town. I don't work there, parking and buses are expensive and time consuming and I can get so much stuff (especially music) on-line. The last physical CD I bought was a punk/new wave compo one from Asda. However, if there was a music store in Wigston, or even Oadby, I'd be very inclined to use it. Let's go visit a bank manager and put it to them about financing our out of town music store BS!
Finnegan Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 By the way, did I mention I used to have an EP in Ainleys?
Guest Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 By the way, did I mention I used to have an EP in Ainleys? Seriously?? What band would it have been located near in said store?

Are you sure it was Ainleys on the High Street? I only ask because I know St Martins Records original shop was up there somewhere. I remember Dimension well, we bought our ZX81 and Spectrum there, heady days. From the ages of about 15 right through to my late 20s I found going in record shops incredibly exciting. Stumbling across something rare that you'd been looking for for ages was a brilliant feeling, as was the day that something you'd really been looking forward to being released. I'm the 8 millionth person to say it, but the demise of the record shop has resulted in something being lost, but it's not necessarily that easy to define what. If I win the lottery, Trav, I'll open up a record shop somewhere in south Leicester and you can run it and I'll come and hang out (but not too much as it could put off potential customers). It doesn't matter if it doesn't make any money, which is just as well as I imagine it's nigh on impossible to make money from a record shop now. I think the ones that still exist are just scraping by and doing it for the love
RobHawk Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 Left Legged pineapple in Loughbourough = Ten million times better than Ainsleys. FACT!
Bellend Sebastian Posted 7 February 2011 Posted 7 February 2011 Left Legged pineapple in Loughbourough = Ten million times better than Ainsleys. FACT! Opinion! But it was very good. I remember the adverts for it at the Curzon cinema well. I bought a Morrissey 'Your Arsenal' t-shirt there, which is definitely a fact. I always liked Castle Records in the Charnwood Centre too, which although hardly cool packed a lot of stuff into a tiny shop, and was dead cheap as well. I was proper sad when that went down the pan, although I hadn't been there much in recent years as I'd moved further away

I used to get alot of the more mainstream stuff from there!! Both are now no more which is really sad because i loved them both!! Loughborough now just has a HMV! Who hasn't! I see kids hanging outside of HMV and feel really sad as they don't know what a proper record shop really is!!

I think the ones that still exist are just scraping by and doing it for the love If I remember correcty (and I'll admit, I often don't) they took over St Martins didn't they? Maybe I'm getting the 2 confused. And as you say about record shops scrapping by the last time I went into Rockaboom (last year on a rare foray into town) it looked very run down. I mean, it's ALWAYS looked run down, even when it was (or maybe even "especially" when) in Loseby Lane, but it looked run down even more so. I used to spend hours shopping in the Silver St, Loseby Lane, Cank St "triangle", so many great shops - Rockaboom, Very Bizaar, Voodoo, (which, again, used to be on High St), Another World, plus Thomas's arcade and not forgetting The Globe pub.
Mickey O'Neil Posted 8 February 2011 Posted 8 February 2011 There was an HMV inside the Haymarket as well, on the corner where that stationary shop is currently. I used to buy most of my U2 tapes from there! I used to go to the ORIGINAL Archer Records too on Highcross St. I remember the Co-Op on High St. Had a big garden centre. You could cut through to get to highcross St. It was also next door to a shop called The Jean Centre!! Does anyone remember a shop called The Store!!?!? Had a load of different shops inside it. It was where HMV is now.
Zingari Posted 8 February 2011 Posted 8 February 2011 does anyone else remember that second hand record shop , just inside highcross street ( about opposite the red lion ) i think it was called Browns, (and they had lots of magazines under the counter and in a room at the back , that i wasn't allowed to see ) maybe the records were just a front
hairy Posted 8 February 2011 Posted 8 February 2011 Does anyone remember a shop called The Store!!?!? Had a load of different shops inside it. It was where HMV is now. Yes. It was a bit like an indoor market for 'fashion'. I used to tour all the record shops in town Revolver, Ainsleys, Smiths, Midland Ed looking for bargins. There was a second hand shop near the sweet shop in St Martins too. Above that was The Art Cafe were we used to spend most of our time. Then came Rockaboom in the Malc Arcade, BPM, MG and that other one on Loseby Lane which used to sell you stuff before it was released. I now do all my vinyl shopping online at shops in Leeds, London and Kent

I bought the Beach House double LP with dvd there the other week. £30 at Rockaboom £42 at Amazon £40 at Hmv.com
The Doctor Posted 8 February 2011 Posted 8 February 2011 It was right next to Audioslave! I have a picture! are we going to get to see this picture? edit: double post.
Raj Posted 10 February 2011 Posted 10 February 2011 used to goto a shop on Granby Street more or less opposite The Poundstretchers. Then it moved closer to the Train station then just died. cant bloody remember the name. Anyone?
