Koke Posted 17 June 2009 Posted 17 June 2009 Rigged or not, I've never seem them so active and outraged like this. If this country was in real shambles, would the British people stand up and speak out against the shambles of the state of country? I doubt it. Fair play to the Iranians I say.
Ultra Posted 17 June 2009 Posted 17 June 2009 Could easily turn very nasty - if mishandled the situation may well lead to civil war. The Americans are steering well clear, partly because they know that taking sides may be counter-productives, and also because, given recent history, they can't exactly take the moral high ground when it comes to conducting elections.
Daggers Posted 17 June 2009 Posted 17 June 2009 I've seen the same pictures, just in a Venezuelan setting...and therefore fall short of thinking there's a decent groundswell of opposition. The media is very good at spinning stories - especially a global media hellbent on mischief.

Guest Bilo Posted 17 June 2009 Posted 17 June 2009 The election results are, to say the very least, suspect. The young of Iran, increasingly looking to the West for inspiration, were clearly very much in favour of Mousavi. They dress like Westerners, listen to Western music and wish for greater ties with the West. Even the traditional supporters of Ahmadinejad have begun to grow tired of Iran's economic difficulties and his confrontational attitude towards the West. With such a backdrop, the idea of Ahmadinejad winning a 28% majority, with landslides in his opponent's hometown and province, seems very fanciful. The fury on the streets must worry those who remembered the Islamic regime coming to power 30 years ago in very similar circumstances, mass public rebellion against an increasingly authoritarian government. The Council of Guardians have announced a partial recount, but this does not meet the demands of the public who want a full rerun. With such a great number of people wanting more liberal governance, and bearing in mind Iran's history of revolution, they would be well advised to listen to the mood on the street or the events of 1979 could well repeat themselves.

This is true. A very, very tricky one for the Americans to involve themselves in for a number of reasons. I dread to think how Bush would have handled this situation...........

Ultra Posted 17 June 2009 Posted 17 June 2009 Opposition supporters have used websites like Facebook and Twitter to organize rallies and to get the message out about what's going on inside the country. No great surprise, given the background of the people behind Facebook and Twitter, and their sympathies with a certain state which would be delighted to see Ahmadinejad fall. However, given that Mousavi served as prime minister for eight years under Ayatollah Khomeini, it's not certain that foreign policy would significantly change.
Shrenchel Posted 18 June 2009 Posted 18 June 2009 Voter turnout exceeded 100% in 3 areas. Those Iranians just clearly fooking love voting.

By all accounts it is Mrs Mousavi who seems to have the support. Which is a little awkward I am sure..

Should have known the protests were nothing but an Israeli plot. Them pesky Zionists.

breadandcheese Posted 18 June 2009 Posted 18 June 2009 Should have known the protests were nothing but an Israeli plot.Them pesky Zionists. Yeah, Ultra, please explain your comment because it seems to be hidden with innuendo. Fair play to the Iranian people for standing up for their rights against their rulers who could very easily decide to use force. Takes a huge amount of guts and makes it even more shameful that so few people vote over here. As someone else stated, I don't think there's much between either candidate in terms of foreign policy. I think Mousavi is regarded as moderate because he held his wife's hand in public, which is crazy to think that makes you moderate. Shows how different our culture is. One thing this election does put to bed is the myth that certain groups of people don't want democracy and a chance to have their say.
Webbo Posted 18 June 2009 Posted 18 June 2009 If this country was in real shambles, would the British people stand up and speak out against the shambles of the state of country? I doubt it. Have you seen the over reaction to people who are unhappy about a statue? It's hardly surprising people keep their gobs shut.
Koke Posted 18 June 2009 Author Posted 18 June 2009 Have you seen the over reaction to people who are unhappy about a statue? It's hardly surprising people keep their gobs shut. That was not an over-reaction though. It was the usual suspects going on another one of their tedious rant about ethnic minorities getting catered for and getting everything and whilst the indigenous people of this island getting fuck all - and lads like Cardiff_fox and James called them out on their bullshit, and rightly so.

You can't complain about apathy and then slag off people who have an opinion, just because you disagree with it.
Koke Posted 18 June 2009 Author Posted 18 June 2009 That just proves my point though. If people really felt that strong about it why didn't they do something about it - object to it, send complaints to the council, protest about their dissatisfaction, whatever, anything. Instead they went on their usual ethnic-minorities-get-everything rant, so it was only right they got called on their bullshit that the council funded the statue, and to be reminded the fact that no one knew over half the statues in Leicester anyway - Nobody slags people for their opinions.
